Answer:
We remove the hose from the barrel, remove the lid, and when it's good and dry we store it in the crawl space upside down (without the lid on). I'm not sure that's necessary, but that's what we do. The hose we leave attached to the downspout

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by It works Easy to install. It works. Had it for weeks. Just exactly the instructions July 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Rain Rock Product came quickly and easy to set up I bought the 40 gallon rain storage rock. Very pleased April 26, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by This rain barrel looks as authentic as you could get. I would recommend the 40-gallon rain barrel. I look at other reviews for the 80-gallon which I really wanted. If this one works well, I will get another 40 and connect them. The hose should be a dark color, not white. The 40-gallon looks as good as you would ever to expect. May 28, 2011
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Attractive rain barrell The 'barrel' met the need for an attractive front of the home collection device. It was easy to install, instructions were clear and simple to follow. The shut-off at the end of the drain hose allowed plantings in front of the barrel which will, when grown, disguise the entire installation. It is completely enclosed so should not have an alga problem. We have yet to have rain but it appears to be of quality equal to my other two older collection barrels. November 9, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Very realistic looking. The rainwater catcher looks much better than a barrel sitting at the front of my home. I have rain chains rather than down spouts, so I cut a hole in the top for the chain to go into the rain catcher. August 4, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product-- ,Essential to raise at least 1 foot off the ground for best performance August 11, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great design, poor accessories We had limited space and also did not want to see big round barrels in our yard. These are great visually and blend in the with the landscape. The negatives which we found out about a few by reading past reviews:1) access point on top of rock is pre-drilled, and of course, was not on the side we needed to go to from gutter downspout in both our locations. 2)Plastic pieces were poor and we replaced with Fiskar's diverter along with a copper faucet with an on/off that you can access saved water from. 3)Everything needs to be silicone sealed or you will just lose the valuable water you are trying to save. April 16, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by After putting in all the work to install it, had to return it because the outlet leaked. Very good looking rain barrel. I was very dissapointed and frustrated when after following the instructions, I built a level platform lined with pavers to support the weight. Once I had it all set up (which involved moving plants and bushes to accomodate the rain barrel) I proceeded to fill it with the hose to test it (as recommended) to my dismay, it leaked from the outlet where the hose is attached. The leak came from around the black ring. Thinking it was merely loose, I tried to thighten it, but the whole thing just spun around. If this happens when it is brand new, it obviously is not made to last! April 26, 2012
