How do you filter out dirt and debris from entering the barrel through the hose, especially if you are unable to clean it out due to it's excellent sealing from the outside

Answer:
You need screens in your gutter at the down spouts. A few years ago I got new gutters to match the siding and got to look at the diverters, there was no debris in them so I'm guessing none got in the barrels either. When I drain them for winter I have never seen any debris either so the screens work.

50 Gal. Sandstone Water Urn Flat-Back Rain Barrel with Integrated Planter and Diverter Kit is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 191.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor Stock Quality Control Rain Barrel arrived completely dented in on one side, although there was no damage to the box. Leads me to believe that the warehouse purposely shipped a damaged item thinking that the customer could fix it. Returns of online purchases through the Home Depot computer system are time-consuming, and the customer service rep had to override several options since the barrel was shipped from a state with different tax values. Sorry Home Depot, never again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice rain barrel This item is made of very heavy duty material and it looks quite nice. The only issue I have with it is that you must use the diverter on it. There is no hole at the top to allow rain to get in. If I had known that when I ordered it I probably would have gotten something else, but that's my fault for not checking it out better. Get yourself a good 3/4" drill bit, this thing is made from very solid plastic. Overall it looks very nice and I believe it will do the job it is intended for and last a very long time in the weather.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice addition to outside of house The terra cotta rain barrel is a nice addition to the side of my house. The barrel itself looks good and I like that all the water that gets harvested is fully contained within the diverter/ barrel collection system and not exposed to open air. Water flow from the hose is surprisingly good, almost like pressurized water, and runs for a long time. The barrel is lightweight when empty but extremely heavy when full - follow instructions carefully when building the base and also when making critical cuts to the downspout and connector tubing. I pretty much did exactly what the instructions said and everything worked perfectly for me first time. The built-in planter at the top only has one small drain hole and I noticed outside rain water is pooling up there.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from we bought 5 we bought 5 of these and I cut a hole in the top with my drill and hole saw attachment then used a drain cover for the top it fit perfectly I also have a y diverter so I can control how much water might go to the rain barrel and some still go out I use a quick connect to just drain the water in spots in the yard that need some water on the grass, super easy I might get a soaker hose later to let it go to the flowerbeds instead I'll try to get some pictures later

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful and decorative water barrel! Love this new addition to our home. Very easy to install with the included instructions. Performs exactly as described and now I have healthy water for my plants. The flat back of the urn allows it to fit nicely against the house too! I love the fact that the top of the urn is designed for plants also. I opted for a nice succulent dish for the top to add some color.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Looks good, set up not great The barrel looks good, is light to carry. The set up process isn't great. The issue is the drain diverter. It doesn't fit well. Also, not that you have to drill a hole in the barrel to insert the drain tube. You'll need a special drill bit for that.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Rain Barrel deficiency The fact that this is not ready to use and holes must be drilled is a big drawback. I have purchased better previously.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not what I thought it was...... One couldn't tell from the online photo that this particular barrel doesn't have a screened intake for the water to flow into from the downspout, and the description was inadequate. It turns out that you have to drill a hole into your downspout and then attach a tube from the downspout and into the side of the barrel. How much water can that collect??? I think this is an idiotic design as so much water will bypass that little tube and continue down the spout. Both barrels were returned to my local store 2 or three weeks ago. (I better make sure I received a credit for this return!)
