Customer Questions & Answers

does it come with a spigit?

Asked by: McWeth
It comes with a short hose and an on-off valve which you could put on the barrel or the end of the hose.

Does the "Diverter Kit" work? Looks like a lot of water will still go through the middle hole of the Diverter.

The instructions don't mention how the water normally flows through the downspout.
Asked by: JE66213
I was a bit apprehensive, but it works well. I was surprised how much rain collects in the barrel.

Is the area where you connect the hose brass or plastic?

Asked by: Sheri
It is plastic, and after six months, the connection is leaking. Tightening doesn't work, and I think the problem is in the end of the small hose that comes with the unit. It is some kind of yellow metal, I don't think it is brass. I think it is cracked, but I can't find out until the barrel is empty. Unfortunately I am losing precious Southern California rainwater.

Is the top of the rain barrel removeable for access to interior? Can we view the manual?

Asked by: Timothy
The top is not able to be removed, there is no access to the interior other then the hole you make for the diverter tube and the threaded drain at the base. I was hoping the top would be able to be taken off to be cleaned or in case of debris but have not had an issue yet

Fortunately the product is heavy plastic and attaching an air compressor to the drain hole popped the dent out without damaging the barrel. (If an air compressor isn't available, water from the garden hose will do the same thing.) Otherwise, the barrel looks terra cotta-ish and has the advantage of being light weight and easy to move. Installation is straight forward and the instructions are clear. The built-in planter on top helps the barrel blend into the garden. Now we just need an end to California's drought.

As far as 50 gallon Terra Cotta urns goes this terra cotta urn is way out in front. It surpasses any other terra cotta looking pot in its field. All other terra cotta pots should just give up.

It took a while to get rain here in southern California, but now that it is full it works well. However, with our last heavy rains the hose attachment at the bottom is leaking. We have tightened it, but it still leaks quite a bit. Unfortunately, until the barrel is empty we can't replace it. I can't find the receipt, so I guess the hose assembly can't be replaced by the company. I am disappointed about that and also losing our precious rain water. Additionally, as some people have pointed out, the flat back side does bow out when full. That isn't a critical concern for us however because it sits on a patio and not against a wall. Just hope it doesn't burst.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice addition to outside of house The terra cotta rain barrel is a nice addition to the side of my house. The barrel itself looks good and I like that all the water that gets harvested is fully contained within the diverter/ barrel collection system and not exposed to open air. Water flow from the hose is surprisingly good, almost like pressurized water, and runs for a long time. The barrel is lightweight when empty but extremely heavy when full - follow instructions carefully when building the base and also when making critical cuts to the downspout and connector tubing. I pretty much did exactly what the instructions said and everything worked perfectly for me first time. The built-in planter at the top only has one small drain hole and I noticed outside rain water is pooling up there.

I think it will be easy to install, although I bought a different installation kit. I love that it has a planter on top. Only reason I deducted a star: the lid is not removable for cleaning. This will be an issue in the future.
