Although this brace is ideal for retro fitting from below, I had access to my attic and was able to install this with no problems whatsoever. The brace telescopes via an internal screw and extended to the required length to fit tightly between my 24" on center trusses. See photo.
The "legs" at either end of the rod provide precise adjustment and stability. My ceiling fan was rock solid after installing from this Retro-Brace
After installation, the box was flush with the bottom of the sheetrock.
The next size (depth) is twice the price so use this one unless you really need more depth for wires and nuts.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by TT74 A lifesaver for a retrofit!
I needed to relocate a light fixture in order to center it up properly on a new kitchen table. Nothing worse than all the trouble to move a box 9 inches! I needed an innovative product that would allow me to hang a heavy light fixture and not require any additional holes in the drywall for installation. This baby was the ticket! It's sturdy and easy to install (watch the manufacturer's YouTube video). It's strong and well constructed but I did notice the way that the saddle tends to wobble a little on the bar even after installation. It wasn't a big deal in my case for a light but same say this can lead to fan wobble. A simple addition of a set screw would be a simple deign fix for this. In the end it was a lifesaver!

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Mizzle Great Product. Does the job!
This absolutely did the job. I'm not the most handy person, so I was a bit concerned but once I put this into the ceiling, I was easily able to expand between the ceiling joists without an issue. It's very sturdy too so no worries there.

Excellent product for hanging a fan after the walls have been put up. Claws dig in tight, and do not move. I probably could have done pull-ups from my floor joists holding onto this bar....I didn't attempt though.

This box is nothing sexy or outlandish. It's just an electrical ceiling box, but for doing old-work projects, this is indispensable. I bought 4 for a kitchen/living room remodel I am doing. The bars are solid, parts well machined and tapped - all needed parts are included. A little planning allowed me to get these shipped to store for about 3/4 price of the ones stocked at the store. I didn't install any fans, but these things are pretty beefy - I'd have no trouble putting a 50lb fan on one of these boxes.

Easy to install. Bar is very strong (to include the end "feet" grips on joists. HOWEVER...there is NO WAY to prevent the electric box bracket from rotating around the bar. Of course, once you screw the electric box to the bracket, the box will prevent anything close to a full rotation. However, the box/bracket assembly is still free to "wobble" around the bar. So, of course, once you install and turn on the fan, it wobbles. It's not going to fall down, but it's still super-annoying. I tried several tricks to prevent this, but nothing worked. There really ought to be some sort of set screw, better bar geometry other method, or other method to prevent this.
Bottom-line: I recommend buying some other brace.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by yogo Depends on your situation
The whole purpose of this bracket, is so you don't have to go up into the attic. If you have no insulation between rafters this bracket will probably work great or the rolled in pink insulation you might be able to push the pink stuff up and put this bracket in. I have the 24" of the blown in stuff, I ended up with a laundry basket of insulation on the floor which fell threw the 4" outlet box hole, before I gave up and went up into the attic. The bracket is very strong, probably strong enough to hang on, but there is no way to tighten up the outlet box, it will still spin around no matter what you do causing the fan to wobble.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by RazorCat RETRO-BRACE WITH 1-1/2 IN. CEILING BOX
Purchased these to install 3 new 52" ceiling fans in our lakehouse. The original ceiling boxes were installed on one side of the room which required the wiring be relocated to accommodate a center-mount ceiling fan.
This Retro-Brace helped make the process much simpler. The installation is about as trouble-free as you can ask for. Very solid once it's cranked down tight between the joists. Very solid once the fan is mounted.
Should hold up for many years.
