Customer Questions & Answers

Which is better for a beginner to build shelving / bookcase; sliding miter saw or table saw

Asked by: Anonymous
A difficult question with many answers. There is no substitute for a table saw. Give me a table saw and a router and I can build anything. But for a beginner to cut only to length with angles, The miter saw would be the tool of choice.

Does this saw have a stop and depth setting for dado cuts?

Asked by: Anonymous
It does but it appears worthless. The depth adjustment is very minor and you need to be careful not to hit the bottom under the table. The non-sliding miter saw has a much deeper cut and I never had to worry about depth. I just upgraded from a Ridged 10" non-slider to a 10" slider and I am disappointed at how shallow the cut goes. Not sure what I'll do now. Maybe go back and check out a DeWalt slider.

Does this 10" saw fit a specific Ridgid stand? If so, which stand accomodates this saw?

Asked by: Anonymous
There are very few stands built specifically for one chop saw. Most, and including the ridged stand, are "Universal" and will work with any chop saw given the right length bolts. The Ridged stand comes with two sets of different length bots that will work in most applications. I noted though that the 10" sliding compound miter saw has threaded holes right next to the bolt holes. If you found a bolt to fit the threads, you could screw it in to the stand brackets without any bolts sticking up through. There are normally many ways to mount a saw on these stands. You can mount a piece of ply wood to the brackets for example, and then mount the chop saw to the wood. The saw mounts nicely to the 150 foldable stand Ridged makes.

The Laser and light are a great feature. Collects dust very well. I bolted it on a Kobalt stand no problem. I love the handle placement. Makes cutting with either hand a breeze! Don't hesitate, pick up this saw! Built this farmhouse table below and everything came out great!

The table was square to the fence and the blade was perpendicular to the table. My first cuts were dead on. The Diablo 40 tooth blade was put right to the test building Christmas tree stands cutting an entire pallet of pressure treated fence boards. I stacked them 3 high and cut them into three 2 foot pieces. Almost two hours of constant cutting The Diablo blade and Ridgid saw work great together, quick smooth cuts. I like both the soft start and the blade breaking. The soft start allowed the saw and shop vac to share the same outlet. No tripping of the circuit breakers.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good saw for a DIY I am not a GC, but a definite DIY type of person. We decided to build a new deck onto our home, and needing something reliable and sturdy to help me do the job. I looked at several of these saws from different manufacturers before landing on this one. It has some cool features that saws I have owned on the past did not have like the laser guide (hard to see unless in a lot of shade), tilts both left and right (used more than I thought), great saw blade comes with saw, slide lock is easy to get to, miter lock system works great and is quick, having three grab handles on it makes it a lot easier to handle than the traditional "grab it where you can" style I was used to, motor is quiet when running full on. I built a 30 x 10 deck, and the saw preformed admirably. Motor has the feature that slowly winds up the blade which took a little getting used to. For what I do with it, and the price/warranty, it fits me perfectly. What sold me on the saw was the lifetime warranty plus price point. Not sure I would suggest it for a high volume/production cutting platform as it is a little slow if you are used to something with higher RPM's, but as they say, the faster it goes the more it costs!

If you are a wood butcher with a framing axes on hip this is not the saw for you, buy a DeWalt 12" sliding miter but if you are stain grade finish craftsman you will love this saw. For twice or even 3 times the price you can't beat this saw. The soft start, center handle, ambidextrous trigger, front controls and blade brake give the cabinet quality craftsman a saw that can reduce his work load and make accurate reputable cuts. The dust collection pickup needs a little attention as do all miter saws but is a easy fix with a duct tape extension. The saw came set at dead on zero and the diablo blade is plus. The double laser can help production and gravity light is nice extra if you are cutting in low light conditions. In my opinion Ridgid set a new standard for finish miter saws with this 10 inch beauty.

I've owned this saw for several years now, and it's served me well for this-and-that projects. Only one warning (at least on mine) - when you tighten down the back fence, it goes out of square with the table. This can be a real pain with crown molding if you're doing it with the crown against the fence and making only a °45 cut. The crown markings are rather vague and a bit off, so, the only downside to this saw would be for crown molding cuts.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great saw for the money! I played with several saws before purchasing this one. My first impression was this was the most solid feeling saw in its price range. The slide and movement feel solid and precise, unlike some of the others. The LED lights and laser guide are great too. Some of the adjustments don't work exactly how I initially expected, but they didn't take long to figure out (without having to crack open the manual). I've only used this for a single one day project so far, but fairly certain I won't have any regrets.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great saw Great saw. Love the solid feel. The dual laser lines and gravity light are very handy. Has all the customary stops for crown, etc. Also like the depth stop - can use for quick dado/rabbet. I bought the 10" since i have lots of blades and didn't want to add another size to my inventory...and this has all the capacity I'll likely ever need. The stock 40 tooth diablo cuts fine...have not needed to change out to finer blade yet (one floor and trim job so far). The saw is heavy so having a stand helps.

I was in the market for a 10 inch gliding / compound mitre saw, and did a little bit of research before making this purchase. This saw came highly recommended by Woodworkers Journal, so I figured I'd give it a go. I did a fairly extensive recessed-panel wainscoting project with this saw (about 50 linear feet), so I broke it in with pretty heavy use over a couple of weeks. The saw performed really well, and I'm very happy with the purchase. It was really a pleasure to use. I swapped the stock 40 tooth Diablo blade for a 60 tooth one, but it was nice to see the saw come with a good high quality blade (I actually moved it to my table saw). I would encourage everyone to read the manual and adjust the saw before use (calibrating the laser, etc.), because that will save you a lot of time and aggravation later. Really only a couple negatives: 1. The lever for locking the saw's mitre angle is a little clunky. When you are making lots of adjustments on the fly (like mitreing both ends of panel moulding), it starts to get annoying, because it isn't fast, and more than a few times the skin on my hand got pinched, and I did a bit of cursing. But, for light / normal use, like casing a window, this probably wouldn't be an issue. 2. The dual laser lines are wider than the kerf on the blades, so it's not 100% accurate. If you set it in the middle, it will still be off by a 16th of an inch or so. So, you need to get used to this and adjust. If you can live with both of the above, then I definitely recommend this saw.
