Product Overview

The RIDGID 12 gallon high performance wet dry vac is designed for pro's and DIYers who want a traditionally styled, medium sized vacuum that delivers the powerful performance and rugged durability required for jobsite clean-up. Its 5.0 peak horsepower motor delivers the suction power necessary to handle tough clean-up chores. This RIDGID vac's 12 gallon drum size results in a more compact design that requires less storage space on a service truck, in the shop, or in the garage. • 5-peak HP motor provides powerful suction for heavy-duty cleanup
  • Compact size, side carry handles and 4 swivel casters provide for great maneuverability
  • 15 ft. cord wraps around the power head for storage
  • Built-in drain for easy emptying of liquids
  • Accessory storage space on the caster feet and hose storage on the lid allows quick access to attachments
  • Includes 2 extension wands, utility nozzle, a car nozzle, wet nozzle and VF4000 filter
  • Accepts RIDGID filter bag, VF3502
  • Full lifetime warranty against material defects and workmanship
  • Peak horsepower represents a level at or below the maximum horsepower output of an electric motor tested in a laboratory using a dynamometer

Customer Questions & Answers

For dry vacuuming, when do I use a vacuum bag vs a filter? Do you ever use a vacuum & a filter at the same time?

The instruction manual says nothing about using vacuum bags yet there are bags for it.

Will this work in the home on carpet?

I'm over 65. Bought a $300 Sears joke of a vacuum. That is a lot of money when you're on a fixed income. They do not take vacuums back once they are used. I trusted that it would be a good Sears product. The wand in itself is too heavy to basically carry around, the thing doesn't even roll on carpeting, which means I'm constantly dragging the weight of it behind me and pulling it around all the doorways. If anybody has any ideas if this Home Depot vac will work in my home, please help! It looks like the wheels might roll pretty well. At my age, you don't need to bend to the floor to get the cord out either to plug it in either. What was Sears thinking? The only good thing was the retractable cord. Thanks in advance, for any help you can give me. I appreciate it. CatinMI

This is a shop vac and it has wheels but as far as carpets goes I have a dyson that we use in the house it does carpets and wood floors and tiles it has wheels it has plenty of power but its still a vacuum not a carpet steamer. my advise is call stanley steamer twice a year and save money. but you can buy a regular vacuum that's light weight and easy to use. Put your sears on ebay and try to sell it.

For starters, the top does not fit tightly onto the lower drum. The unit I purchased had more than an 1/8" of up and down movement, even when "latched." While this isn't a problem while the unit is running and creating suction, lots of debris comes out from the gap when the vacuum is switched off, especially when the unit is moved. From other reviews, it appears that this isn't an isolated issue. Additionally, the underside of the the top has many deep nooks and crannies that collect large amounts of debris and is nearly impossible to clean. After several frustrating (and messy) experiences with this vacuum, I returned it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good working shop vac but... I needed a new shop vac but did not want a large space consuming 16 gallon one. After much reading of reviews on not only HD site but Lowes, Sears, Amazon and Consumer Reports, I narrowed the choice to the higher hp 12 gallon sized vacs. This partly due to the ability to suction but also the fact that the larger hp models utilize the larger diameter hose as the 16 gal does, so extra hose parts will be easy to access. So far the 12 gal has been a very good performer. Like all plastic base models I have seen, when you lift it up by the two side handles the dirt and such vacuumed into the base comes out through the gap in small amounts. Strange that there is not a small rubber gasket there to insure there is no leakage when not in use and being moved. I like the position of the on/off switch due to ease of touching it without reaching around trying to find it because it is positioned in front behind the large front handle used to wrap the electrical cord on. My major complaint concerning this shop vac is the changing of the filter. With the old system you unscrewed a latch on the bottom of the filter and slipped it off so you could do this easily over the base to catch any residue/dirt. Now you have to push down on the rubber seal around the protrusion that sticks up in the center. Yes, try to do this without having junk drop all over the place. What a giant step backwards in intelligent constructive development. Obviously another "smart" idea from an engineer or designer who never has to clean or change a filter. So if you can get over this flaw I say it is a good shop vac but had I realized this before buying I would NOT have bought this shop vac. Now the site is saying there is inappropriate language in my review. I am guessing I said suction so that is bad when referring to vacuums. There is an 800 number in this online site to call for assistance and calling it is worse than worthless in attempting to get an answer to my inappropriate language question.

This vacuum is definitely not the best choice for shop woodworking tools dust collection. The paper filters fill up very quickly as does the pleated filter, rendering the machine useless for that purpose. The muffler doesn't diminish the sound but seems to lessen the suction quite a bit. It is very noisy! That said, however, it is a very good utility vacuum for general shop cleanup and, used with a directional collection hood, works well as a workbench sanding vac. I suspect it will work better with a cyclone or some other vortex type 2d stage/pre-filter.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from cheaply built The power head and the canister are held together by a snap type fitting. There is no seal whatsoever where the two meet. This is fine when the vacuum is on. However, the second you turn it off, the contents of the canister leak out around the mating surface. You basically have to then sweep up again what you just vacuumed. I informed ridgid about the issue and the operator said that it is working properly. I'll be returning this immediately. Don't waste your money on this cheaply built vacuum.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst product I have bought in recent years This vac is the most awkward and unfriendly product to use that I have ever encountered. First, it does not have convenient attachments for use on such as a garage, etc. - nothing to get into corners, etc. Then, the cheap attachments are so difficult to get on so that they stay, that I, a woman, cannot use them. IF you do get them on once, you cannot remove them easily. They stick until you nearly pull yourself apart. Unfortunately, I didn't return this when I should have so now I am forced to buy a user-friendly one and junk this one.

Ii replaces a 12 gal Shop Vac and this is far superior to the shop vac its at least twice as powerful and it came with more attachments than the Shop Vac and a filter I use a bag and the filter it came with. The only draw back is the wheels and the wheel holder snap in. It takes a lot of force to snap the wheels I used a vise and a piece of wood it worked great. Also the hose from my Shop Vac also fits so you can use various sizes of hoses and attachments if you want to. The 21/2 inch hose will pick up almost anything so be careful of small tools because it will pick them up too. This is a very powerful machine and noisy better were hearing protection. I'm glad I brought it and will buy another when my other shop vac dies. Did not use it to pick up water yet but will when the time comes. Well worth the money for a powerful machine.

It comes with a regular dry filter but you do have to buy and install the correct filter if you are using the vacuum for cleaning up water or fine powders like dust from cutting drywall. There are usually several types of filters (a wet filter, a regular dry filter, a dust filter) on the shelf near the vacuum at Home Depot.
