The upper portion or "stem" of the batteries that are inserted into the drivers or charger are both identical to each other. It is only the base of the batteries that are different. The base of the batteries is the part that sticks out from the tool or charger when fully inserted, the difference between them has no effect on the fitment into the charger. The double capacity battery is just a battery with twice as many individual lithium cells inside the battery pack giving it twice the capacity. The extra 3 cells are placed in the base of the battery pack making it larger then the standard battery. Or for the simple answer to the question, Yes you can charge both batteries with the included charger but not both at the same time. You will not need an extra or different charger for the 4 amp battery unless you desire the ability to charge both batteries at the same time. In that case you will not need a different charger just a 2nd standard charger like the unit included in the set. Read Less

They come with a charge. It's best to store batteries with around a 50% charge. Theoretically HD is storing the battery for you prior to purchase. I can't recall exactly but after usage/discharge of battery power, I think I get a full charge out of mine in 20, maybe 30 +/- minutes (of course this depends on a few obvious variables).

The batteries will have a partial charge on them right out of the box as lithium batteries should never be left in a discharged state for any longer than required and also should not be stored for an extended period of time fully charged. For the longest and most reliable battery life lithium batteries should be kept at 3/4 charge if they will be stored for more than a week. The worst thing to do to a lithium battery and cause it to have the shortest life cycle is to let the battery sit fully discharged.
You can expect a charge time of 25 minutes for a 2.0ah battery and 35 minutes for a 4.0ah battery + or - a few minutes for each if they are fully discharged. It is OK to remove the battery from the charger and use it before it is fully charged since it will charge up to around 50-60% in the first ten minutes. However doing this repeatedly will cause a slightly quicker decline in the batteries capacity over time. Read Less

Rated 4.3 out of 5 by 171 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Ridgid lies about warranty, drill has a weak chuck I bought this drill back in November 2015 and submitted the online warranty information the day I bought it. Here we are in April 2016 and despite following every instruction of theirs I still do not have confirmation of the LSA and the people at Ridgid are absolutely useless and offer no help at all. I do not expect I will ever get upgraded from the 3 year to the LSA. To top it off the chuck on the drill is complete garbage and doesn't hold anything at all tightly. The impact driver is excellent but because of their awful customer service I will never recommend this kit or any other Ridgid tools to anybody. April 17, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great impact driver, solid battery life Bought this about 2 years ago. I had to work a little to get the LSA active. Bought online, ship to store, and the receipts I had did not have the numbers they needed. One trip back to the store and couple emails. It is worth it to have the LSA. Building a log cabin and used this set to drive 3/8" x 6" lags to hold my joist hangers. 4 lags per hanger. It took us about 20 minutes to size and set each rough cut joist (3x10 white oak). Each one of those little bity 12v batteries would drive about 12 - 14 of those lags. Put it on the charger and use the 2nd one and by the time that battery wore out, the 1st one was fully charged. Also been using the impact to drive deck screws and I think 2 batteries rotated on the charger could outwork me all day. One thing I've noticed is the light is not quite in the right position. Needs to be a bit lower as the shadow of the chuck blocks light from getting exactly what your working on. The drill driver is pretty good. Yeah that chuck doesn't hold that tight, but since I got the set on sale for 119, can't really complain, especially with the lifetime warranty. May 7, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great drill combo I am a contractor and I almost always buy the best or next to the best tools I can since I want top performance. These drills are the smaller and least heavy duty I own BUT they turned out to be great. They have enough power to do almost everything I need AND if you (keep your box) and register them on line (it's a pain) but worth it, you will get life time guarantee including the batteries that come with it.I love these drills. I have many heavy duty ones but with these being powerful and small and light they are great to use. The only downside is ONLY a 3/8" chuck size capacity, but for most uses this is fine. When I need a really powerful drill I use one of my bigger ones. May 6, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Powerful, light weight & compact Powerful, light weight & compact, Just wish they were made in America, I'm not sure I'd have bought them had I known this. Maybe if Trump gets in they come back to manufacturing here. May 18, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by not like the old one the impact is a 5 star the new design of the the drill itself well the biggest down fall is the chuck it just randomly drops your bits for me huge problem, I'm a Directv installer and dropping my 1/4 inch drive in the snow gets expensive so now i'm using a Milwaukee 12v great chuck but nothing like Ridgid torque...I had the old 12v Ridgid never once did it lose any bits but a customer stole it from me May 1, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by factory refurbished purchase I write this review in regards to the factory refurbished kit I purchased. The drill chuck separated from the clutch on using it for the first time. The bearing that the drill shaft rotated had come out of the pressure seat in the clutch body. I contracted Ridgid and received no response the 1st time and the 2nd time I emailed them they said to send it to an authorized repair shop for repair. I wanted Ridgd to pay for shipping since this obviously was their error in quality control but they refused. This will be the last tool I buy from Ridgid. April 7, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Why would u make this if it couldnt at least work the 18v ridgid chargers!? It will not power 18v chargers for your cordless power tools April 28, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Purchase, use this a lot Nice small compact size with plenty of power. I have a 18 volt cordless drill and this has as much power as that only in a smaller size. Both drill and driver work great. April 5, 2016
