It has a narrow base and is top heavy. The solution is to construct a wide platform to bolt it to. I would use no less than 24 inch square. Then just put casters on the platform. If 3/4 inch plywood and 2x4 on edge were used it would raise the unit 2.25 inches. Now you have to deal with the height of the casters. I did some checking into this myself. Home Depot has one on line that looks like it would work nicely. Rockler has one that looks very much the same, but costs more. It is very top heavy as all drill Presses are so it is difficult to move safely.

Answer: 
The depth (distance between the drill bit/chuck and the support post) is generally 1/2 the full circle swing of the drill. A 15" drill will have a depth of close to 7 1/2".

The RIDGID R1500 drill press has a depth scale with a depth scale lock, which can be set to allow repetitive drilling to a set or chosen depth.

There's a lever on the right side of the headpiece, toward the back and two T headed screws, one on either side of the headpiece. Loosen the two screws, pull the lever toward the front of the drill, move the belts to the desired setting then push the lever back and tighten the two screws.

You loosen the knobs on each side of the R1500, push back on the motor to tension the belts, and tighten the knobs to secure the motor in place.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Buying Ridgid tools is about the lifetime warranty For this item and heavy items i would recommend opening the box at the store and check for damage, the first one came with the spindle broken, din't noticed until after assembly, (returned) the second one came with the table crank lever broken, not returning it will live with it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great addition to my growing Ridgid shop I was able to assemble in about an hour. I was able to left the head unit on by myself, maybe shouldn't have. Half of the time was spent cleaning the packing crud off of the parts, I guess it needs that to not rust when stored and shipped. It assembled perfectly square out of the box. Runs smoothly and fairly quiet. The key-less chuck i'm not so sure about, but will give that some time. Only a couple of negatives; the light could be better and the crank for the table movement needs a sleeve over it to allow for easier movement, both fairly minor.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rigid 15" drill press The drill came packaged in a cardboard box with two large Styrofoam partitions. All of the parts were in good shape but the Styrofoam was broken up. It did it's job in protecting the contents. Assembly was simple and straightforward. A little help from the wife was necessary when mounting the headpiece. The drill works well. I've used it on a couple of projects and so far have no complaints. The only issue I have is with the base of the drill. For some reason all drill manufacturers follow the same basic design and provide a fairly small base. While reasonably stable, they tend to fail to compensate for less than level floors. I would really like to see a new base design that would provide some leveling capability and perhaps enhance mobility.
