Distance away from the house is the crucial factor here, not which way you face the generator.
If the wind is blowing away from the house it could be close, but if the wind is blowing towards the house then the exhaust fumes would be going in that direction.... If it's (say) 25' away and the wind is still blowing towards the house, it would be somewhat diffused by the time it reached the house, and not

You have to take into account the wind possibly pushing the exhaust back to the house. Our winds were blowing east to west and our house has north and south exposures. All our big backyard oaks and maples had fallen so we felt comfortable that the exhaust would be blown westerly away from our home. Had the winds blown differently we would have positioned differently. We also made sure to seal the open parts of windows where the extension cords were run out, with foam and duct tape so fumes could not re-enter. I am a nurse so I paid particular attention to this. We also had a battery carbon monoxide monitor. God is always in the details....pay attention to them. Read Less

Sounds fine, but to be 100% sure you should buy a Carbon Monoxide detector (~ $40 at HomeDepot) and install it in your bedroom. This way you will know for sure if all exhaust gasses remain outside of your bedroom....

Answer:
Yes, that would be fine on an open patio environment for short term usage, as long as the weather is not a problem. The generator should not be used in or exposed to the elements such as rain, sleet, or snow. It should be sheltered, if it is intended to be left outdoors.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Reliable, easy to use, great instructions, does the job Bought the Ridgid 3600 because it has a great engine and sturdy frame. I use the generator for emergency powerloss at home! It is about average when it comes to loudness, it's not a Honda but about 1/3 the price. Easy to move, easy to operate, large tank size, just enough power to run all the essentials. The real down side to this unit is the size, it is much larger than similar generators because it has an extremely sturdy and protective frame. The directions were easy to follow and the whole unit was set up in 15 min. I would recommend this unit!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great generator for emergency or job site use. I bought this generator for my father last week when the powerful storms tore Ohio, WV, PA and VA apart. We ran two freezers, a refrigerator some lights and even a small air conditioner (varying loads of course) with it. It seems well built and a good buy for the price. It only produces 125 volts and does not have the 230 volt plug due to its size but it worked great for his needs. He was without commercial power for over a week and this generator kept his food cold and his lights on. I am a Power Production (generator specialist) technician and Electrician by trade and I would definitely recommend this unit for emergency/portable use. It comes with the break in oil and started up on the FIRST pull! It's a little thirsty at full load but thats the price you pay for convenience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Clutch First winter living in the burbs and the news predicts a bad ice storm. I run out to Home Depot to get a generator, they tell me there are none left. I check and there are a few dusty display models, so I get the cheapest one. I had all intention of returning it and getting a different one if I didn't use it. The next morning at 7am, our power goes out, 700k people out in PA. I had read some of the instruction manual the night before so I knew where to fill the oil. This thing started on the first pull....every time and ran almost non-stop for the 4 1/2 days we didn't have power. The only way I'm getting rid of this is if we get a bigger one.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from high altitude operation Easy to assemble, started easily, ran great, BUT when reading the instructions it said that to operate at high altitude (above 5000 ft.) the unit must be taken to an authorized Subaru dealer for modification. Almost all of Wyoming is above 5000 ft. The unit if used as shipped would run too rich and foul the plugs among other things. The repair is fairly simple but I was concerned if not done by a dealer there may be a warranty issue. There are no authorized Subaru shops in Wyoming. I returned the unit as I could not use it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little Generator We bought this generator for hurricane Sandy. Would've loved to got a bigger one, but this was the last in the store. Mine didn't start up on the first pull, or first 10 for that matter, but I figured out that the problem was a clogged fuel filter. I thought that was strange considering it was new out of the box. After it finally started, I was very happy with its operation. Had this little genny at top output, running my boiler, hot water heater, 2 fridges, computer, tv, and some lights. Has a 4 gallon tank that I would refill every 9 hours or so. Never strained or bogged out. It ran for 78 straight hours. I never even shut down to refuel. I would definately reccomend this. I will be getting a bigger one, so next time I can hook all that up again as well as my sump pumps. This wasn't big enough wattage to power the sumps. Wasn't really a concern for me cause rain wasn't a factor for my area. So i lucked out. Other than the defective fuel filter, which ridgid is sending a replacement for, it exceeded my expectations.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Loud!!! Just bought this to use with an RV while camping. I fired it up for the first time and it was really loud. I couldn't stand within 10 feet of it without ear protection. It is rated at 73 decibels at 23 feet away. I have a decibel meter and it was reading about 85-90 decibels at 23 feet. That's 2-3 times louder than rated. I'm not sure if the muffler was defective or if the decibel rating was severely exaggerated, either way there is no way that you could use this in a campground without disturbing a lot of people, even during the day. I returned it and will be looking for something else.
