Distance away from the house is the crucial factor here, not which way you face the generator.
If the wind is blowing away from the house it could be close, but if the wind is blowing towards the house then the exhaust fumes would be going in that direction.... If it's (say) 25' away and the wind is still blowing towards the house, it would be somewhat diffused by the time it reached the house, and not

You have to take into account the wind possibly pushing the exhaust back to the house. Our winds were blowing east to west and our house has north and south exposures. All our big backyard oaks and maples had fallen so we felt comfortable that the exhaust would be blown westerly away from our home. Had the winds blown differently we would have positioned differently. We also made sure to seal the open parts of windows where the extension cords were run out, with foam and duct tape so fumes could not re-enter. I am a nurse so I paid particular attention to this. We also had a battery carbon monoxide monitor. God is always in the details....pay attention to them. Read Less

Sounds fine, but to be 100% sure you should buy a Carbon Monoxide detector (~ $40 at HomeDepot) and install it in your bedroom. This way you will know for sure if all exhaust gasses remain outside of your bedroom....

Answer:
Yes, that would be fine on an open patio environment for short term usage, as long as the weather is not a problem. The generator should not be used in or exposed to the elements such as rain, sleet, or snow. It should be sheltered, if it is intended to be left outdoors.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent Product The product I bought is of fine quality, its the second one that I buy because its easy to use and maintain. When the power goes out at home I known that I can count a my generator to power up . March 22, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Should last a lifetime... Runs both the A/C and microwave...while everything else is turned on in my RV. It never even seems like it's working hard at all...absolutely sound investment. On the subject of "sound" it IS a little bit loud (but not very...just being selfish). If Subaru put a more functional muffler/resonator on this thing it would be that "Ten" we're all looking for. Right out of the box, it started on the first gentle pull. Amazing. That's it. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good Purchase very easy to handle and start. good purchase! i would recommend this product. January 26, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by So far so good I like this unit. The most impressive thing was how easy it started up the first time. It was kind of funny because I gave it a yank like I do all the other things I have like this and it started before I was through with the pull which really surprised me, and that caused me to drop the pull handle and that is something the manual says to no do. Anyway, it starts great. Now as to why I gave it less than awesome ratings: First, the online description says it doesn't come with oil, so I bought a quart of oil. The online manual does not tell you that it ships with oil, so I ended up with an extra quart of oil and the unit only takes about half a quart. I gave it a less than good rating in the features category because some other brands have one like this with similar specs that also have a battery start! (If I had known that before I bought the unit I would have probably bought the other unit.) Also, nothing is mentioned about the fact that you are supposed to actually ground this unit with the standard house grounding method of an 8 foot copper clad grounding rod!! Anyway I spoke with a licensed electrician and he said that no one grounds portable units like this in practice. So it would be a lot better if the manual said, that "grounding is good, but not necessary. I cannot give it better reviews until I have had it longer and actually used it. January 24, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Loud!!! Just bought this to use with an RV while camping. I fired it up for the first time and it was really loud. I couldn't stand within 10 feet of it without ear protection. It is rated at 73 decibels at 23 feet away. I have a decibel meter and it was reading about 85-90 decibels at 23 feet. That's 2-3 times louder than rated. I'm not sure if the muffler was defective or if the decibel rating was severely exaggerated, either way there is no way that you could use this in a campground without disturbing a lot of people, even during the day. I returned it and will be looking for something else. September 9, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by GREAT GENERATOR A GREAT GENERATOR FOR THE MONEY--SUBARU ENGINE, NICE DESIGN AND PRODUCES CLEAN ELECTRICITY FOR HOME ELECTRONICS! December 8, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by high altitude operation Easy to assemble, started easily, ran great, BUT when reading the instructions it said that to operate at high altitude (above 5000 ft.) the unit must be taken to an authorized Subaru dealer for modification. Almost all of Wyoming is above 5000 ft. The unit if used as shipped would run too rich and foul the plugs among other things. The repair is fairly simple but I was concerned if not done by a dealer there may be a warranty issue. There are no authorized Subaru shops in Wyoming. I returned the unit as I could not use it. September 26, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Ridgid So far, so good. Started up first pull. Easy to move. September 17, 2015
