I purchased this unit after my older unit developed some issues. This new unit is so much better in many ways. The balance on this unit is great and the variable speed is extremely valuable. The extra long power cord is a real plus. I have used it now for about a total of 5-6 hours and I am extremely pleased with it. The one negative is the continuous run button ( allows you to run the unit with out holding the switch trigger) is too small, it is very difficult to activate.

Good powerfull sander but a little heavy and cumbersome. You think Ridgid would come up with something better

I purchased this sander while I wait for parts to fix my beloved Bosch 1274 DVS, (discontinued, why?). I live in Hawaii and was not able to purchase this product even online. I had to get my sister to purchase it for me online in PA. Even my cousin in CA couldn't purchase this sander but I like the specs and it has a lifetime service contract that they will honor here in Hawaii, but you must purchase the sander through the Home Depot. I've been remodeling homes for 25 years and I can tell you this is the most powerful and smoothest 3x21 belt sander I've ever used, I really like it. Now here are the negatives. 1. I just completed my first project with it, a set of stairs. All the wood had to be milled and sanded so it was a fair amount of work but my Bosch did half the work before the toothed sprocket wore out. Now I already I have to replace the timing belt (drive belt) on this sander. I can't believe it wore out so quickly, I hope this isn't a constant problem with the tool. 2. I thought the top of the sander was flat so that I could use it upside down on my workbench, but it is slightly domed, so close to a perfect design but no, fail. 3. The dust collection is great when it's hooked up to my shop vac but without a vacuum, the air vent for the motor blows right in your face. I guess engineers do their best to think of everything before production but they blew it, so to speak, on this one. Now it's in production and I guess it's too expensive to do a redesign so soon. Maybe that's why it's so cheap. It's obviously a heavy duty sander and I suspect it will last me for the rest of my life.

This is a real nice belt sander and the price was great. A popular magazine reviewed some belt sanders and said that the only thing stopping this one from getting a five star rating was not having variable speed. Well these new ones do. I first tried it out on an old chopping block that was probably as old as I am and was coming apart due to glue failure. I was able to pry all the pieces apart without damaging the wood but the dried up glue needed to be removed and I was amazed at how easily this new belt sander got down to fresh wood. I have bought a number of Ridgid brand tools over the years and I think I'm going to be as happy with this new belt sander as I am with my other Ridgid tools.

I was hesitant to buy this sander based on some of the negative reviews this sander had but I am very glad I did. The machine performs very well and the price isn't so bad for what you get. Belts are very easy to install, I had no problems with tracking and only occasionally did I need to adjust them. 4-5 adjustments in a five hour run isn't bad. I am not sure why some people were reporting that this machine eats belts as I did not experience this during 5 hours of continuous use. I bought a 5 pack of bi-directional belts for $8 and went through two and half. None of them broke they just didn't sand as effectively after awhile so I changed them out. Sandpaper does that. I wonder if the people having belt problems were using cheap belts or maybe belts that are not bi-directional? If you don't use bi-directional belts you could end up putting belts on the wrong way and perhaps then you would encounter a belt eating problem. But that would be operator error not a machine problem. The sander is easy to use, the weight is just right and I was able to sand in any direction without tracking problems. Another common problem reported was with the collection bag. Like many others I encountered this problem right after I emptied the bag for the first time. The trick is not to fill up the bag 100%. The instructions recommend to fill it half way. Well I didn't take that advice either but when it got blocked I was able to clear it with a can of compressed air like the ones you use on your computer. Just insert the straw right above the top of the sanding belt where the impellers are, spray some air and the blockage will clear and you are back in business. Lastly, is the way the sander starts up. While I would like a way to override this feature it wasn't that bad. I could see this as a benefit on some projects but it wasn't necessary for my project. It still ramps up pretty quick and the delay isn't as long as some people indicated. The reason I give it a 5 star is because of my desire to have an override on the delay start and because I think the machine should be able to clear the blockage I made on its own. But again, I was the one who insisted on maxing out the bag everytime and this will push dust back into the unit. Operator choice on this one.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Esa77 Just buy it. Can't go wrong!
It's sleek and narrow like not many others out there, really a handy and nimble design. Sign up for the Lifetime Warrany too! Doesn't include a case and finding one to fit is somewhat of a small challenge. The plug light is a cool feature too. You can keep looking and looking and pricing and comparing and always end up with a plus here with that brand or a negative with that other brand, it's a good quality item, just get it! Ha!
