Best sander of this type - variable speed, good dust collection with the bag and can also take a 2 1/4 inch hose or a smaller one. Quiet relatively and comfortable in the hand. Excellent product.

This random orbit sander has performed great. I am very impressed with the dust collection system in that it does a much better job of picking up the sanding dust than other sanders I have. The variable speed control and storage case are nice features as well.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Bill Very poor dust collection
Bought this sander about 3 weeks ago. My old Porter Cable sander finally died after 15 years. The Rigid sander is solid with reduced vibration but the dust collection is horrible. You can either collect the dust in the sander bag or hook it up to your vacuum. Hooked up to my wet/dry vac, somehow the dust shoots out all around the sander base and collects on your arm, shirt and all over the sander and does not get vacuumed up. Make sure to wear a mask and goggles because the dust goes everywhere.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by DEGOLFNUT Fair Sander if you don't mind sending it back once a year for repairs
I've had the sander for two years and used it on several projects. Last year built a play set for my grand-daughter. While sanding the wood to knock off the rough edges, the Velcro wore off the pad. Took it back to home depot and they sent it off to have new pad installed (at my expense, not covered under warranty). I've used it on a few small projects in my shop and does a good job. This year, I was preparing my deck to repaint it. I was scraping and sanding the loose paint and the same thing happen again. Velcro on pad wore off. Not getting my money this time. Going to spend a little more to purchase the yellow and black model. Old Saying seems True " You get what you pay for"

This is the best orbital sander I've used. I'm in the construction industry and have used many other brands but the rigid is this far the best. What makes it worth it is the variable speed dial that makes it possible to change speed lower when sanding softer woods and turn it up when needing a more abrasive sander. Now it's more time efficient because you don't have one speed that will peel it off of harder woods and then have to be delicate on soft woods. You can be just as abrasive on the softer woods now because the sander actually slows and sands softer on its own allowing you to work the same no matter the wood type. Rigid products are quickly filling my tool box In place of others. It hasn't gotten over heated and I've put it to good use. I actually have 3 total and havnt had any problems or doubts. Oh and the delayed start up allows you to gradually start as it builds up to speed keeping you from leaving swirls from the pads an believe me without that feature a 60 grit pad can leave ugly swirls that show up even more after staining.

I would not recommend this sander for anyone outside of the home craftsman that does not plan to use it often.
I have had nothing but problems with this sander.
I own over 35 Ridgid tools - from table saws to nail guns. I am an interior trim carpenter.
1st - button placement is all wrong. You will find yourself turning it off accidentally constantly. It kinda gets annoying after a while.
2nd - the orbital just starts to spin uncontrollable and make swirl marks. Completely useless. Also it becomes dangerous and can cut you because of the fast wild spinning. Yes I cut myself.
3rd - The Velcro pad you stick the sanding disk to wears out fast. Cheap to replace but in the middle of a job.....
4th - Stops working after less than 20 hours. Starts really slow then builds to super spin speed and will ruin your nice surface.
Unfortunately I have decided to no longer buy Ridgid tools. I was the guy on the job site with all Ridgid tools. But it is always the same - they make a really unique tool with nice features but they always have one or more parts that are just cheap, poorly designed and break quickly. I do not believe they put much time into actually using the tools by professionals. Save your money - if you are a home craftsman that just does honey due list buy a cheap Ryobi tool. At least if it breaks it is cheap to replace and does not take months and months dealing with a poor return department.
Dang it Ridgid I really wanted to love you!
