Can I use this to sand my wooden front door? Does the fact that it's orbital make a difference in going against the grain? I've only used the type that uses sandpaper. What do you recommend ?
Asked by: gypsysoul
Yes you can. You might want to use a finer grit sand paper such as 220 and start off with the speed set at it lowest setting, working up from there as needed. If you need to strip the door then you might want to use a rougher grit.

can you change the sanding pad to work for adhesive sand paper? or to a 6inch pad?

Asked by: Zach
Yes, you can change the pad to an adhesive type pad (not included) rather than the included hook and loop type pad. No, you can't change it to a 6 inch; it is 5 inch only.

Can I use this sander to strip the paint off my aluminum patio furniture?
Asked by: Nick
If it is flat then yes it should work. If it has grooves then it probably wouldn't do well and you'd want a sanding sponge as the pad is flat and you won't be able to get into creases.

A coarser grit really takes the wood off but its hard to tell because so much of the dust goes into the bag. The only downside and why I subtracted a star is because the exhaust is on the left side of the sander which means when you are right handed it blows dust into you or in your face if you're sanding a side surface. If the port was on the opposite side it would blow away from you.

I replaced it with a 2601. The switch was harder to use and it blew lots of dust from the bag connector area. Now it too has died. This time I have the extended service warranty. The Service center is 20 miles away in a town I rarely go to. Two round trips to get it serviced. I may just replace it with another brand. It does sand well.

This little gem made sanding my sheet-rock seams so much easier to endure. Nobody likes the mess of sanding sheet-rock work, but by removing the dust-collection bag on the sander and attaching my RIGID shop vac hose directly to it, there was virtually no mess to clean up, and my arms didn't get nearly as fatigued as they did when I did the first wall or 2 before buying this sander.

They are used daily and are like the energizer bunny...they just keep going and going. Every year I take them to the Home Depot repair dept and for less than $20.00 ea they service them and they are good for another year. Two of the units are over 10 years old and operate just as new. We changed our shop over to ALL Rigid tools and they have not failed. We need tools that stand up to everyday use without failing and have found the Ridgid products fit the bill everytime... Great price for a Great tool. Furniture Doctor LLC AZ

This purchase was a tough decision because I couldn't decide between this tool and the Dewalt DWE6421K at the same $60 price. After reading all of the positive reviews though, and the fact that Rigid is still made here in America and Dewalt is not, I chose this sander and couldn't be happier. The random orbit doesn't mark the surface of your work and with a good sanding disc operation is effortless. While I normally wouldn't do so, I can even use this sander in my closed garage on rainy days as use is so clean with the dust collector catching almost all of the dust. The gradual startup is also a plus and just makes this already easy-to-use tool just that much easier. I shelf all of my smaller tools in their boxes when not in use so the bag that comes with is another plus as I now have a manly toiletries bag for overnight stays. Setup? Unbox it, plug it in, get to work.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 5 inch random orbit sander I have been using it for a month now. It does a great job. I had a portercable for 15 years that served me well, rebuilt about 8 times now the armature is burnt up. SO after reviewing the best sander reviews I opted to try the Ridgid. SO far so good.I don't think I am going to get 15 years out of it but we shall see. I seen a couple reviews about the switch failing as orbit bearing failure. I am a self employed custom woodworker. I buy the tools and maintain them so I feel that a good quality tool with proper maintenance and cleaning it should last. IF you purchase one just remember that it's not a grinder it's a finish sander.

At full RPM I was able to stop both of these with my bare hand using light pressure!! So needless to say when trying to sand something all it does is vibrate a little. I marked a piece of pine with some pencil marks.....it took over 2 mins to remove the marks with 80 Grit sandpaper!!! Totally unacceptable! I called Ridgid customer service and talked to Earl. I explained what it was doing, and he confirmed it was not working right and to return it, which I did.....twice! I will never buy a Ridgid brand tool again.
