Customer Questions & Answers

can you change the sanding pad to work for adhesive sand paper? or to a 6inch pad?

Asked by: Zach
Yes, you can change the pad to an adhesive type pad (not included) rather than the included hook and loop type pad. No, you can't change it to a 6 inch; it is 5 inch only.

My sander doesn't seem like it spins very fast at all on high speed, and when I apply pressure it stops spinning almost completely. Is this normal?

Asked by: Delux
Yes, this is normal. When using the tool, the pad will not spin very much at all. Make sure to let the tool do the work...the weight of the tool itself is sufficient...be sure not to press down on the tool. If the tool's own weight is not getting the job done, then you might want to use a coarser grit disc or switch to a belt sander for very rough pieces.

Hand comfort ?

I am comparing this Ridgid to a Makita model with larger handle & front adjustable handle. Will I need the Makita handles for comfort? Is the variable speed a feature I will use? Use will be for touch up sanding of a deck preparing for solid stain.... thus I will be working on hands and knees. On-Off Switch really a problem??? Ridgid model is $20 cheaper and looks solid from reviews. Should I pick the Ridgid over the Makita and save the $20. Handles is the key difference...Thanks.

Hand comfort is very good.

Can this sander be used as a polisher as well? Are polishing pads available for it?

Asked by: Indyboy32
I do not believe so as I have never seen polishing bonnets for this sander. Most polishers have a rubber disc that is covered with a lambswool bonnet.

They are used daily and are like the energizer bunny...they just keep going and going. Every year I take them to the Home Depot repair dept and for less than $20.00 ea they service them and they are good for another year. Two of the units are over 10 years old and operate just as new. We changed our shop over to ALL Rigid tools and they have not failed. We need tools that stand up to everyday use without failing and have found the Ridgid products fit the bill everytime... Great price for a Great tool. Furniture Doctor LLC AZ

This purchase was a tough decision because I couldn't decide between this tool and the Dewalt DWE6421K at the same $60 price. After reading all of the positive reviews though, and the fact that Rigid is still made here in America and Dewalt is not, I chose this sander and couldn't be happier. The random orbit doesn't mark the surface of your work and with a good sanding disc operation is effortless. While I normally wouldn't do so, I can even use this sander in my closed garage on rainy days as use is so clean with the dust collector catching almost all of the dust. The gradual startup is also a plus and just makes this already easy-to-use tool just that much easier. I shelf all of my smaller tools in their boxes when not in use so the bag that comes with is another plus as I now have a manly toiletries bag for overnight stays. Setup? Unbox it, plug it in, get to work.

I first used my belt sander and after a couple of passes I noticed it was leaving track marks. I hustled down to Home Depot and picked up this sander and some fine grit disks. World of difference, the disks popped on with a hook/loupe and stayed in place. The sander took the old finish off as quick as the belt sander but without the gouges. As advertised, most of the sanding dust went into the bag. I love the "slow" start, when turned on, it takes about a second or so to ramp up to full speed making it a lot easier to control that first second. I have been using my belt sander to refinish my deck, but in the spring I will switch to this wonderful sander.

Sander worked great with good control and predictable removal. Has variable speed and dust collector worked well. Sanding pads are super easy to apply and remove. Carrying case is nice touch. Product has a lifetime warranty so if any issues then return to Rigid for repair. Will rate if 5 stars if it continues to perform as it did on it's maiden voyage.

I replaced it with a 2601. The switch was harder to use and it blew lots of dust from the bag connector area. Now it too has died. This time I have the extended service warranty. The Service center is 20 miles away in a town I rarely go to. Two round trips to get it serviced. I may just replace it with another brand. It does sand well.

This little gem made sanding my sheet-rock seams so much easier to endure. Nobody likes the mess of sanding sheet-rock work, but by removing the dust-collection bag on the sander and attaching my RIGID shop vac hose directly to it, there was virtually no mess to clean up, and my arms didn't get nearly as fatigued as they did when I did the first wall or 2 before buying this sander.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Poor performance Returned the first one thinking there was a problem with it. Apparently by design the unit spins very slowly and stops spinning with vary little down pressure. Owned Dewalts previously and did not have that problem. Should of stayed with Dewalt

However after using approx. 5-6 times the dust bag vibrates loose and the air sends the bag flying across the shop. Person at HD suggested Velcro to hold on bag. Going to give it a try
