Answer:
Yes, you can change the pad to an adhesive type pad (not included) rather than the included hook and loop type pad.
No, you can't change it to a 6 inch; it is 5 inch only.

No on the adhesive paper. Don't know about 6 inch but that would extend outward a 1/2" and be unsupported by the backing plate - probably not a good idea.

No, you cannot in either case. I am unaware of any orbital sander that can if it isn't designed to do so. This sander uses only the hook & loop pads.

I recommend that you use this sander as it was originally designed. Read Less

My sander doesn't seem like it spins very fast at all on high speed, and when I apply pressure it stops spinning almost completely. Is this normal?

Answer:
Yes, this is normal. When using the tool, the pad will not spin very much at all. Make sure to let the tool do the work...the weight of the tool itself is sufficient...be sure not to press down on the tool. If the tool's own weight is not getting the job done, then you might want to use a coarser grit disc or switch to a belt sander for very rough pieces.

I think you may have gotten a lemon, I just plugged mine in to see if I could relate to your situation. It does have a delayed start, which I like, so it doesn't take your wrist off with a full spin start. A full speed it runs like a air plane. Sounds like you have a Home Depot return, I think you will love your new one! Mine would take a lot of pressure to stop it!

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Random Orbital Sander Review The Rigid random orbital sander has a good high quality feel, and coupled with the variable speed adjustment is a hard combination to beat, not to mention the LSA (lifetime service agreement). I have used this sander for several large projects since I purchased it. The sander has worked flawlessly thus-far. At $59 the Rigid sander is $20 cheaper than the comparable Dewalt sander (which I also own). The Rigid sander performs as well as my Dewalt and has a lifetime repair or replacement warranty whereas the Dewalt comes with a 3 year warranty. The Rigid sander comes with a very nice dust collection bag, two 5" sheets of 80 grit sandpaper and a handy carrying bag. September 20, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best ROS I've ever owned Have always bought low-end sanders (Tool Shop, etc)... what a difference $45 makes. Variable speed is awesome for achieving the perfect finish no matter the grit. The sander itself well-made, nice heft to it with an ergonomic design, and comes with lifetime warranty. Very excited to own and use this tool for years to come. October 18, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great purchase Sander worked well for my furniture refinishing project. Slightly more expensive than some of the other brands/models but well worth a few dollars more considering that it came with a storage case and also has a lifetime warranty. A few of the other sanders that I considered were more expensive and were less well equipped. So, average price, but better than average value. October 14, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Love this sander! This was a replacement sander for another brand that I had. This sander is smoother running, and does a much better job. Also this sander has very little vibration like most sanders and that makes very comfortable to use. The dust collection does a very good job and is very easy to empty and doesn't come off during use. I can't say enough about this sander. September 20, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Super Sander I've used this for 15 minutes to 3 hours straight and never had any problems. I like how it starts offf slow then kicks in. September 20, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Another great tool from Ridgid Great sander. My Father-in-law has the 6 inch version of this sander and I have borrowed it so many times I may as well have owned it. I finally decided to go out and purchase my own. I went with the 5 inch version because of price and a wider variety of 5 inc discs that were available. It is a great sander and I have already used it a number of times on different projects. The size and weight are nice, it is not so large as to be cumbersome in single handed operations, and it can get into a few more spots than the 6 inch could. Definitely would recommend this sander. August 30, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great sander for most projects This sander worked like a charm for the first 80-ish hours of work. I was manually sanding all of the railing on my deck and it was perfect to get the job done. The motor held up just fine, it did a great job at collecting the majority of dust, and the plug/switches worked every time. Eventually, the velcro disc on the sander became worn down and the abrasive discs would no longer stick to it. With some minimal searching online I found some cheap replacement parts and they are super simple to swap out. Since I was using this tool for several hours 4-5 times a week, I wasn't too surprised it wore out. If you are looking to use this for simple, smaller projects then you shouldn't have any issues with it. August 23, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works perfectly I needed to sand my basement floor between coats of epoxy and this worked perfectly. Hooked up to my ridgid vacuum and left virtually no mess. October 4, 2016
