Answer:
You need a 12 gauge extension cord. A 14 gauge extension cord is only rated for 15 amps. 30 or 40 ft is no problem for a 12 gauge cord. You would only have to bump it up to a 10 gauge cord if you were going over 100ft.

50 ft. 14/3 3-Outlet In-Line Extension Cord is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 24.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from great price Don't know why this is clearanced off, but this is a great price for this heavy duty extension cord. Contrary to what other posts suggest, you should NOT plug in a fridge, microwave, and other appliances into this one cord. This cord is rated for 15 amps. If you over load this cord with to many things, you may not trip the breaker or generator, but you will heat this cord up and deteriorate it to the point of failure eventually. I'm a licensed electrician, so I speak with knowledge on this topic. Otherwise, a great cord for the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for Christmas light displays Why Home Depot stores don't put this on display with the Christmas decorations and extension cords I don't know. I had a situation where I needed to power a light display that was slightly longer than every 8 feet that the 25 foot version of this cord would power. The 50' cord took care of that. Just wish they'd make more variations of lengths for Christmas displays. Such as a 35 ft or a 40 ft cord so I wouldn't have had to spend as much money. Picture: Power on both ends of house with a one outlet timer on each. I had two of these power cords on each outlet/timer that each of its three outlets went to the wreath and snowflake on the side of the porch and the two in front.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Value. Purchased as "Deal of the Day" . Wish we would have bought more. Great Value. Purchased as "Deal of the Day" . Wish we would have bought more. The only negative was that it is a little on the heavy side for me. It made it a little cumbersome to roll back up, however my husband had no issue with the weight at all.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly what I needed!!! These cords were exactly what I needed for my wife's holiday blowup displays. I had always secretly worried about the cords I was using and when I saw these plus the price. It was just too good of a deal to pass up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Extension Cord, Very Good Value on Sale... Extremely Slow Shipping This is a great product and I would recommend it... BUT... If you need it quickly do not order it online from Home Depot...It took over 3 weeks to receive the item from Home Depot.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product. More useful than normal Ext cords This is a pretty good value and having multiple outlets spread throughout the cord is handy for stringing lights. This type of cord is also useful for generators because of the heavy gauge.
