The backing pad came apart after ~20 hours of use. There is no way to order the part 305189001. This is the second Ridgid power tool that has failed prematurely.

Make more heavier grit paper for this machine. 36/ 40/ 50 grit paper would be really helpful, especially given the price of this palm sander.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by chrisruiz this sander could be great if the pad wouldn't wear down so fast
I'm on my 3rd or fourth one so far and the backing pad either wears out or completely breaks off after a few uses. I don't know why Rigid won't redesign . The main inner shaft is only attached by 1 tiny screw which can't handle the force and therefore the backer pad always breaks off. I think it's time to switch to Festool after all you get whatcha pay for ! All their power tools are gear driven too

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by JMcGuire You will be amazed!
You will be absolutely amazed at just how fast this sander can help you finish a job, just how fast Ridgid will accept your hard earned dollar and just how fast Ridgid won't stand behind their name.
I've been a Ridgid brand tools supporter for years now, they have helped me earn my living and support my family. I showed Ridgid my support with every dollar I "Invested" in my tools.
This sander has a design defect in my opinion, and it has been giving this sander an unfair handicap because Ridgid won't fix it, but they sure will be happy to take more of your money to sell you a replacement. "Don't bother looking for the part where you purchased the tool.... It's not there."
The hook and loop pad fails under normal use almost quicker then you can get through a stack of sanding discs.
I've purchased Ridgid tools for years now, and I make my living by depending on them to last. I didn't bother reading the reviews on this sander first because "it's a Ridgid" it'll last....
It feels nice in the hand, it's got great looks and other guys will be in envy when they see it work that wood. It'll be the same old story though, they got your money and you will be left wondering how it happened.
At least you get to keep all your stuff this time.......
As you can see in the picture, "There was only one brand for me"

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by hoffman It was a great sander while it lasted.
I have two of these sanders. Neither lasted more than a year before it quit working. The first one was the motor and the second was the switch. I had not registered either and Home Depot would not help me. So I took the switch from one and put it in the other. It worked up until this weekend and a bearing went out in the drive. The pad flops around. Now I am just a hobbyist and don't really use a sander that much so it doesn't seem that they should be wearing out this fast. I have a 5" dewalt that is ten years old. I am going to give both to Home Depots Ridgid rep and see if he can tell me why they worn out so soon.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by jjc122161 Soft Start\Worn out pad
The soft start is annoying. If you let go for a second you have to wait for it to start again. This is hard to get used to. I only use this about 2 times a year. The sand paper is difficult to remove from the backer. You need to use your nails to get behind it or the backing Velcro comes off with it. Now after changing the paper a few times the backer is going to be needed to be replaced as others have said in their reviews. I believe the backer should be redesigned.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Pdqwint One major weak link to otherwise great product.
I was hired to help restore a mid-century modern post and beam house designed by a famous architect. Repairing rot on the beams is my main job and required that I purchase a random orbit sander. I am pretty much brand loyal because of my experience with my other Ridgid tools, so I went straight for the Ridgid. I loved working with it right out of the box. Plenty of power, The choice of 1/8 or 1/4 diameter orbits is a great feature for the work I'm doing. I had a little trouble with the "Lock-on-Button" as I was having trouble avoiding the trigger and kept accidentally deactivating the lock. I have figured that out now.
My big problem with this product is that after only using it for 10 days, the hook and loop pad has worn out. Based on my experience, comparing info with my co-workers who use different brand and the reviews I've read about this sander, it has a problem with this. What makes the problem worse is that the replacement pad is not available where I purchased the tool, nor have I been able to find it elsewhere. I have ordered 3 of them from an online source but they are special order and I won't likely have them for 2 weeks! I'm dead in the water.
I expect better from Ridgid and based on my other experiences with your products I know Ridgid expects more from itself, too. At least I hope they do!
Without the problems I've mentioned, I would rate this sander 4 stars, at least. The weak quality of the hook and loop material brings it down to a 3.
The fact that the replacement part is not available at Home Depot, or anywhere else that I've been able to find, is inexcusable and since I'm screwed at the job site until my replacements come, the rating now has gone down to 2.
Come on Ridgid! Fix this!

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by yourpalAllen poor product support
I used my sander for a short time before the sanding pad wore down. Home Depot does not stock them and Ridgid's warranty is not easy to use nor practical. A new pad thru this website is $42!
Ridiculous. A poorly designed part needs additional supplied with the product and availability at the store.
I bought a 2 pack on another website for less$
