Questions & Answers

How do I securely attach the wheel to the grinder?

When I put the $85.00 RIDGID wheel on the $140.00 RIDGID grinder I just bought, the wheel does not fit down on the grinder the way it should. When I thread the wheel onto the grinder, it does not leave enough thread to attach and secure the part. What is going on with this?????? I am furious. I have a project to finish. When I go on the RIDGID site, there is -0- information about this product even though the packaging on the grinder wheel tells me to go to your site.

We're replacing carpeted flooring with stained concrete in our house, so our floors require some grinding. My contracted "cement guy" attached my new RIDGID 7 inch 24-Segment Turbo Cup Grinding Wheel to my new Makita grinder, probably using the method Splitshaft described. (Yes, I bought the tools, since the contractor's tools were not to my liking.) The resulting cement dust was overwhelming our house, so I ordered the Makita 7 in. Grinder Dust Shroud to use inline with my existing Dust Deputy and shop vacuum to minimize the dust cloud. In order to install the Makita 7 in. Grinder Dust Shroud, the grinding wheel must now be removed, which is not as easy as Splitshaft described. My "cement guy" mounted my grinding wheel to my Makita grinder to make a trial grind, and now there's simply not enough clearance to slide a common 1" open-end wrench onto the wheel nut. I'm now looking for a thinner open-end wrench to accomplish this. “It's always something.” > Gilda Radner

Thank you for your inquiry. Both Ridgid 12-segment and 24-segment cup wheels have a 50/60 grit. The 24-segment cup wheel gives you more life.

will this wheel fit my 4 1/2 inch grinder?

will this wheel fit my 4 1/2 inch grinder?
Asked by: choppertom
If your 4-inch angle grinder has a 5/8 in.-11 mm threaded arbor, it will attach as long as the angle grinder body does not interfere with a grinding attachment larger than 4-inches in diameter. Be advised the load imposed by this grinding cup on a 4-inch angle grinder would be significant and may burn up the angle grinder motor. If overheating or damaging the angle grinder motor is not an issue and the angle grinder body does not interfere with a larger grinding attachment, there is no reason it cannot be used on a 4-inch angle grinder with a 5/8 in.-11 mm threaded arbor, although not advisable in my opinion. As minimum, I recommend a 7-inch angle grinder rated at 13 amps or greater should be used to avoid damage to the angle grinder due to the load imposed by this grinding cup.

It would be helpful to know what level grit this wheel is so I can plan on going finer if necessary, and if so, to what number grit.

I cannot speak to the size of embedded diamonds in this diamond grinding cup. I can speak to the finish it leaves when used on concrete. Based on the poured concrete floor that I ground with this diamond cup, the finish it left was smoother than the finished concrete itself. Since the industrial diamonds are embedded in the segments of the cup and both the diamonds and steel segments wear during use, the segments and diamonds maintain a relative even profile in relation to each other. I was pleased with the level of control this grinding cup afforded me. I was able grind tile setting mortar from 150 square feet of concrete floor with almost no damage to the concrete itself. In most cases chalk lines were still visible after having ground the mortar away. There were of course light scratches in the concrete surface from the grinding cup that might not be suitable for a clear sealed surface without further polishing with a suitable abrasive.

I used this grinding wheel to clean up a concrete floor prior to leveling. This wheel easily cut into the concrete and in no time the floor was clean as a whistle. The extra row of grinding segments is well worth the higher price.

I was quickly able to smooth and level my cement basement floor to make the tiling project look much more professional. It does make a lot of dust, I recommend you add a dust mitigation device when using this in a confined space.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cuts Fast and Smooth I used this to remove 100 pounds of thinset mortar from 150 square feet of concrete floor. This diamond cup disk stayed cool enough to touch after the grinder came to rest using it dry. Cuts fast. Some wear occurred to the leading edge, little wear otherwise. While grinding it sounded like a 24-tooth combination saw blade. This grinding disk operates smooth and produces a fine finish. I could grind the thinset mortar thin enough to see through with this disk.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Beast Used this to level and feather edges on self leveling cement on patio. This disk is a beast and I mean this in a complimentary way. You'll need a garden hose if outdoors as it generates an enormous amount of very fine concrete dust. A good mask is essential (not the Mickey Mouse cheap mask- you'll need an aspirator type mask) if you can't hose the grinding down. Get a second person to spray while you grind and the job goes super fast. Use a good quality angle grinder. A long extension cord will trip a 15 amp breaker if you're not careful in how much load you place on the grinder. Strong recommendation for this disc.
