It is most likely made by a company named TTI (Techtronic Industries Company) that is out of Hong Kong. Most of the power tools Ridge has is made by them. The wet/dry vacs, are made by the parent company named Emerson. The do however manufacture over 300 different types of tools.

I am not a contractor, I first need to do about 700 square feet of skim coating on the ceiling, then several hundred square feet of skim coating on the walls over the next year. I am not looking to mix mud 24/7, just a few projects.

Hey, I've been in the trade for 15 years... This drill is my "backup" drill. I have lighter drills primarily for driving/screwing and heavier drills for mixing/ drilling holes. This ridgid is a good compromise, and will suit your needs well. I highly suggest that for mixing mud, focus on half buckets -and- use the egg-beater type mixer. You can find the that mixer in the tile section if you they're unavailable in the drywall dept. The reason is they put far less strain on the drill than the paddle mixers. Good luck, and remember to use a lighter mix when skim coating
PS - most people will try to trowel a thin layer of mud on for skim coating. You really just need to fill the micro-pockets. Trowel on a thin layer, then makes a single pass at a high angle, scraping the edge against the wall. It will look as though isn't any mud left, but I assure you, there is. Sand lightly and reapply in the perpendicular direction. Light sand, and Bingo, level 5 walls if you Presanded everything and did your patches right. Read Less

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by RIDGID 8-Amp 1/2 in. Heavy-Duty Variable Speed Reversible Drill Smooth and quiet when mixing mortar for tile.Works satisfactorily if you don't really need a mixing drill. October 26, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Hold on! Had a old B&D that was dying. Bought a Harbor freight special that fell apart after 3 1/4" holes. Bought the Ridgid because I have their cordless drills. This drill exceeded my expectations. One thing I will recommend, be sure you have a good grip on this drill especially when drilling into metal. If the bit decides to grab this drill will twist your arm unless you happen to be a body builder. My right wrist still hurts. October 13, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Drill The VSR on this drill is very smooth. I have finished up some homemade drawers and used this extensively. The only drawback is that it is pretty long so it won't fit into smaller areas. So I purchased a different VSR Ridgid drill to tackle close quarters. I would definitely purchase this drill again. Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by ONE BAG MAGIC TRICK This is the first time i have hd the courage to purchase a Rigid brand tool. I was mixing my first bag of mortar and it went up in smoke like the cheap magic trick it is. I went for it partially for the Heavy Duty and partially for the lifetime service agreement. Lifetime service agreement is great for appearances and sales but what happens when you are on the job and you have to get that job finished? I am going to try a Milwaukee now. August 2, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect Addition I just bought this for my DIY project and can't wait to use it. I have a cordless already but from what I understand this will be a good addition to. August 16, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Ridged 8 Amp2/3 in heavy duty drill Lots of power. Easy to use. Looking forward to my next project July 19, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Slow Turning Speed Bought this drill motor to mix grout and mortar and use 1/2" bits. Found that the turning speed was much slower than anticipated...almost too slow for drilling holes and maintaining bit sharpness. Overall good quality product otherwise. If I was asked to pick one excellent attribute it would be the key holder and longer shaft key for ease in securing bits in the chuck. July 13, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not a Milwaukee Purchased this drill 2.17.2015 to mix 5-6 bags of thinset and drill a few 1/2" holes in 1/4" mild steel on a cargo rack. Luckily I was able to mix 2 bags of thinset before I attempted to drill my first hole in the steel. This drill will mix thinset very well....but it is not heavy duty as advertised...My Milwaukee 1/4" M18 drill would run circles around this light weight 1/2" all day, no question about it....The picture speaks for itself...Returned the drill 2.20.2015 and paid the difference for a real HEAVY DUTY 1/2" Milwaukee drill.... If I were a contractor I would not trust my business to this brand...Yes warranties are great and help sell the product...But...This product was a complete bust... March 2, 2015
