In my opinion, if you like dealing with charging and recharging batteries all the time. Running the risk of them going dead right in the middle of you job and having to wait to do the job later than a Battery powered unit is okay. I have some battery powered tools and I love them for the fact that you can get and go, instead of trying to find an outlet or extension cord. But I have also been right in the middle of a job when my battery died and my other battery didn't charge correctly. Plus you always run the risk of the batteries going bad and having to replace them, and they aren't really that cheap. If you want to get a saw, sander or other similar tool then get corded. If you want to get a drill then get cordless. Read Less

Answer:
I would recommend starting with corded tools, they have more power and don't need to be recharged. As you increase your tool collection you can add cordless for times when your not close to an outlet. And I highly recommend going with Rigid. There lifetime service warranty is hands down the best out there.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 4.6 out of 5 by 92 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Same issue as all the others I purchased this product to replace the DeWalt model I borrowed from my father. Never have I been so unhappy with a RIDGID product. The front sandpaper holder is WORTHLESS, it holds coarse grit sandpaper OK for a while but it wont hold really fine grit paper AT ALL. Now its down to being very little better than a corded paperweight. I will be replacing this with a different brand very soon. This is very sad as I tend to be very loyal to RIDGID in all my tools i.e. Currently owned, Belt Sander, Random Orbital, 1/4 sheet pad, 3 piece air compressor, 1/2 inch 18 volt compact drill, 1/2 inch 18 volt hammer drill, 18 volt X4 impact driver, 18 volt X5 impact Driver. I feel that RIDGID needs to make a design change ASAP for the hold down or they wont be able to sell any sanders at all. March 18, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Avoid - Faulty Product As per all other reviews here, this sander works great for a few hours of use. After 10hrs or so, the front clip will stop holding sandpaper rendering it essentially useless. A secondary, but minor, issue is the sawdust collector. It doesn't work at all. The sander did perform well before this issue, but DO NOT BUY, as the front sandpaper holding clip is essential. This sander is now a useless piece of equipment, and I'm hoping it will be replaced, as it's clearly a design defect. For reference: My entire tool collection is Rigid. All other products I own from the company are excellent. I've also used them 10x more than this sander, and they are bombproof. This is the ugly duckling of the product line January 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Time Saver / Easy To Use / Prevents Damage I had used a similar product that a friend purchased from a discount tool manufacturer, and it put me off this type of tool for a couple of years. Then I had a chance to use this one that another contractor had on the job site, and I changed my mind, so I bought one. I had to install a couple of junction boxes inside kitchen cabinets, to wire up under cabinet lighting. In order to not damage the area around the boxes, and cut the holes precisely, I used this tool to cut the holes, and it worked awesome! Previously, I would drill holes at the corners and try to cut them out with a Sawzall or jigsaw, and would damage the area around the cutout, now, I can cut nice, clean, holes, without doing any damage to the inside of the cabinets. Next, I will be looking at getting different heads to add to this tool, mainly the Right Angle Drill and Auto-Hammer. December 11, 2015
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Same problem as most people the sand paper will not hold in the front clip anymore. I would like rigid to respond to all the complaints about the sand paper not holding in the front clip anymore. Is this a defect? Will they stand by their product and send out a complimentary replacement part? Thank you. December 15, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Don't know how I ever got along without it... I got one of these in 2011 when I was doing some work at home,. We'd found some bug damage after gutting a room and had to cut out a door header to replace it. That's when I got this tool and it was a godsend. Then it came in handy for cutting all the drywall outlet holes and so much more. All that was just with the multi-tool head. Recently, I had a need for a close quarters drill and so I got that attachment. Again, the right tool for the job with plenty of power to drill and drive screws in close quarters. Recently, I had close quarters hammering so I got the hammer head. I can't say enough good things about this tool except that I wish I had this a long time ago. It would have made many things much easier for me over the years. November 8, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Combo Kit for the price I love these tools. I have only had them for a few weeks now, but I have thuroughly enjoyed having them there for the jobs I need them for. I have used the drill which has far surpassed my expectations. The Sander is something I have used multiple times and is does an exceptional job. I had another a skill sander that took me three times as long to do the same kind of work. This sander Rocks. The circular saw works great, but I have only used this once, and the auscilating tool is awesome. This tool is the main reason behind buying this combo kit is that this is regularly $99.00. With all of the other extra stuff it in, it is an excellent deal and a great buy. I am very satisfied with the quality of the tools and the value. January 28, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by front clip doesnt hold sand paper we used the sander about 3-4 years ago for about 10 hours. total. we decided to use it again this year and it won't hold sand paper on front of unit the back holds well but not the front. start sanding and it kicks out the paper. also you can't find any paper with holes. I have a Makita and they gave you a hole punch for the sander. this one didn't give you that. October 30, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Overall a great tool. I picked up this tool because I needed a "fein" saw and the option to add other attachments was I nice option. The fine saw works great and I have added other tool heads to my collection. I now have the saber saw, right angle impact driver, and saw all. I find that its a great tool to grab on the way to a small repair or punch list job. It does so many things that I can leave I log of my regular tools at home I've been using this on the job for almost 2 years and the only problem I have he is keeping track of it. Seems someone is always grabbing it. Overall I'm very happy with this product and plan to buy the pneumatic power unit next. November 24, 2014
