Are these Gen5X tools brushless?

Are these Gen5X Ridgid tools brushless?
Asked by: Heydoc
It depends... Look very carefully at the specific model numbers. What looks like the same product in different sets, or independently caries different item numbers. It is in HomeDepot's history to carefully price control models by changing features. Makes sense, for giving consumers a cheaper option. The trouble is that the differences in what you get are not clearly shown to the consumer. In the end what you pay for is usually pretty well tied to what you get. Here's an example: 15 years ago while in college, the class conducted a design tear down on two seemingly identical Dewalt battery powered drills. One purchased at a HomeDepot, the other purchased at a small local tool supply shop. In that situation the part numbers for the two drills were identical. The local shop drill had metal gears, the HomeDepot model used a tough plastic material for its gears. HomeDepot had the purchasing power and volume for it to be worth having Dewalt make a cost reduced version. The problem in this example is that the consumer was duped with identical numbers. I have not checked product numbers carefully on Dewalt products any time of late, so you are left to your own analysis. When ever I talk to guys in the trades (I am not) they always say, buy it at a non-big box store, you'll pay more, but it will stand up longer. For a home owner like me, or someone who uses it lightly, you have to decide where the best value is. Chances are, I'll never drive enough screws or bolts in my life time to wear one of these out. There was one fellow in the skilled trades who always bought a drill or driver at the yearly big-box sales. He saw it as disposable. He said, "some thing happens every year and one gets damaged or lost, so I consider it disposable and buy one each year, I'll need it sooner or later, and if it breaks, oh well, I got it cheap." You have to decide where you fall in the serious tools game.

Aren't you better off buyign the 5 piece from DeWalt - $299. Higher quality. The lifetime warrantee of rigid is a pain to get -

From my understanding the Dewalt stuff is being made in China now and not holding up to Dewalt standards of the past.

This tools are generally good great, but i have nothing but problems with the batteries. I bought a kit and extra 2 batteries (Total of 4) and at this point 3 have failed within 4 months. I called in for the promised warranty and i was informed that the batteries are on back order for 1 month...seriously....1 month back order for batteries....the nail on the coffin is that they will only ship 1 battery per month (per order) ...so im looking at 3 months.... i just retrofitted my work new truck with all ridgid power tools and now im back to buy new batteries. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED>>>

I just upgraded from the old 18v nicad set. The tools are now more powerfull, and more compact! My only gripe is that for as much as we pay , and I would pay another $50, if the set came with a molded case, and why do they count a flashlight as a tool. It's not a tool. You can't drive a screw with it. You can't hammer a nail, or cut anything with it. If its dark enough to need light, 99% of us use some type of task lighting, and we also have a multitude of flashlights. So add a grinder, that would be a tool.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bought this kit and it worked well until the impact driver failed with a few months of light use.... Bought this kit and it worked well until the impact driver failed with a few months of light use. I thought "no big deal, it's got the life time warranty, they'll just swap it out". Well, my local home depot is not a service center, so I have to drive an hour to the nearest one for to be repaired, or have my local HD will send it out for repair. I'm supposed to send the driver, battery, and charger. I'm in the middle of a job and not having the charger which is used for all of my tools stops my work. The estimated time for repair....a month and a half. If I spend the four hours in the car to drop off, drive home, drive there, pick up, and drive home, that will shorten my wait to 3 weeks. Fantastic. My advice: bite down and spend the extra cash on Dewalt.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Recip saw brings the entire set down All items in this set are of exceptional quality; however, the reciprocating saw is complete garbage! Months after purchasing the set, I had my first project where I needed the recip saw. Less than 45 minutes into cutting soft wood 2x4s, the saw quit. I take it in for repair citing the LSA and 45 (FOURTY-FIVE!) days later I get the "repaired" saw back. Nearly every component internally had been replaced due to burning out or warping. After getting it home, I was able to continue my month and a half old project...but not for long. (less than 10min) 1.) My brand new, repaired saw now had a trigger delay. That in itself isn't a big deal but it wasn't something that was there before and not something I've ever experienced with any other recip saw I've owned or operated. 2.) My new, fully charged 4Ah battery was drained in that same time. 3.) The entire saw had become too hot to hold bare handed. The saw has now been returned for service and I'm not holding out much hope for a positive resolution. Multiple people at the repair center informed me of an inordinate number of failures and processed repairs on the same model. Additionally, I contacted Ridgid support through their message/email service early on and expressed my dismay over both how quickly the tool had failed and the extremely long wait time for its repair. (4-6 weeks) Rep. "Tim" informed me that I, as a home do-it-yourselfer, should be smart enough to have a backup unit and that repairs get done whenever they get done. So in conclusion, I have a recip saw that has been used for less than 1 hour TOTAL and I've been without for over 45 days. I'm looking at as much as ANOTHER 45 days before it's returned to me. Ridgid now refuses to reply to my inquiries which are as simple as, "What are you willing to do if it fails again?" and "Is there some sort of expedited route I can take to receive my saw back sooner?" Ridgid has the word' PROFESSIONAL' tied to their brand, when are they going to act like it?

I have had my tool set for a year now and have had to send my impact in for a new motor and then my circular saw in as well. One problem I've also had is with the Sawzall it seems to want to work but then it just stops when you press the button so, you have to take the battery out and push it back in a few times before it works. To be completely honest though, this set is a great set and competes well with any another professional tool set.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value I was not sure if I should buy these or the new brushless ones. I ended up buying both. Decided to keep this one but I wanted to try the brushless before making a decision. I only compared the driver. The brushless driver is significally faster and stronger. However, since I'm not a contractor and these are only for small projects around the house I decided to keep the cheaper yet powerful brushed Gen5X. Make sure you register the tools so you get the LSA, mine was approved within 5 days.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid Kit Purchased this kit when it first came out on promotion. I love the circular saw (wish it was flipped to view cut from left side) cuts effortlessly with fued blades and 4amp hour batteries, is light weight and well built. A bit cumbersome to adjust depth for right handed users. The 2 speed hammer drill is great but, seems a bit slow even on the second higher speed. It's saving grace is it's led light built into the chuck and hammer drill ability. Love the 3 speed impact, but making my biggest quom of the kit is the impacts quick change chuck needs to be reset to accept a bit almost every time. I had the same issue with my gen4 impact and was hoping Rigid had worked this out. The reciprocal saw is also solidly built and with good power and not too much weight. I left the kit light in the plastic as it does not fill a niche in my lamination needs.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from DO WHAT I DID! CREATE YOUR OWN KIT FOR CHEAPER! I got the brushless GEN 5X circular saw for $140. The brushless GEN 5X compact drill/driver kit for $160 which comes with two 1.5 amp batteries (the 1.5 amp batteries are useless i literally got 5 minutes of constant run time with them). The two 4.0 amp batteries for $100 (they also have a 5 amp battery for $100). and the one handed reciprocating saw for $80.( They have 3 reciprocating saws that are sold separately, one for $80, one for $100 and one for $120). THIS CAME OUT TO $480, and you get everything you need but better than the kit! The light is only 100 amps (thats virtually useless). With the brushless circular saw you get more run time by 30% and a more efficient cut (smooth as butter) and a longer motor life. With the compact drill, you actually get a compact drill. They say this drill is compact but its unnoticeably smaller than ridgids standard size drill. The $160 drill is also brushless which means more run time by 30%, better efficiency and a longer motor life. With the one handed reciprocating saw you get a smaller that you can use with one hand (no vices or clamps!) and its more powerful. RIDGID DOES NOT WANT YOU TO DO THIS!! thats why they made the warranty for batteries purchased separately for only 3 years ( literally the only down side but you get a lifetime warranty for the two 1.5 amp batteries which is reassuring.) I figured since i won't be using these tools everyday, the 4.0 amp batteries will last me much longer than 3 years. However if they don't, i always have the two 1.5 amp batteries for life. ( just a matter of constantly keeping one charged with those batteries). Be smart and create a more efficient, longer lasting and overall better kit like me!
