Answer:
It should fit all RIGIDs. If you ship to store and pickup there would be no shipping charges... and if it doesn't you can return in store no charge to you. They really should carry this in the store.

Hi Sal, unfortunately the WD4070 does not have a built in drain. This adapter works with all RIDGID wet/dry vacs that have a drain.
The model WD1270 has a drain. It is a 12 gallon, and not as compact as your 4 gallon, however if you need to drain a lot of water, then this adapter will save time and many trips emptying a 4 gallon system.

If you will look just below the price of the item listed, they usually offer 2 or 3 options.
Ship to home for free (with a $45 minimum order) or if your item is already over the $45 price point, ship to home for free.
Ship to the store for free (almost every item can be shipped to the store for free regardless of the price point, if it's not a normal stocked item..
Or, pick up in store today, meaning they have at least one in stock at the time you opened up that particular page. If you will look below the PayPal logo, they will actually show you the inventory count that the 'selected' store has in stock at the time the page was opened or last refreshed. If you need 10 of the item and they have 2 in stock, then you know they do not have enough of what ever it is you want - UP FRONT (a feature I personally like a lot).
I do agree that shipping items to home is another money maker for them, but it doesn't make them as much as most people think it does.
When you consider they have to have an employee go find the item in their warehouse, bring it back to the shipping department, find a box or package envelope that it will fit into and arrive safely to you with all the abuse that USPS or UPS or FecEx etc.. will give it during the shipping process, pack the items (bubble wrap isn't free), seal up the package, print out labels, process the shipment through what ever service is used to get it to you, the actual cost of shipping it to you, Social Security taxes that the employer HAS to match, medical insurance (hopefully), warehouse space (space costs money - bank note payments, property taxes etc..), electric, warehouse lighting, heat, water, even bathroom supplies for the employees have to be considered (they sure are not free to them)... the costs of shipping even small items is pretty expensive to them.
In Home Depots' case, they figure they can 'eat' all of those expenses as long at the item is sold for $45 or more (gives you an idea of the profit margin they are making on items). For items under that price point, they are just not making enough profit to be able to absorb the shipping costs and stay a viable business.
Being the 'tight wad' that I am, IF the item is something I need, I often will look for other items that I need, especially if they are on sale (sign of a true tight wad LOL), to help defray the cost of shipping over several items or to get what I want, shipped free, by making their minimum price point to qualify for free shipping, or look at other retailers for other options available.
NO- I DO NOT work for Home Depot, never have in the past either. I used to be in business for myself until disability took me out, and understand a bit of how this works is all...
BTW, I agree with others, this item (hose to drain adapter) SHOULD BE A STOCKED ITEM!!! Not everyone can forecast a situation where they would NEED this adapter, but when they need it, they NEED it NOW, not a week or so in the future... HD would sell a lot more of these if they stocked them in their stores.

The simple answer to your question - NO
The vacuum motor creates a negative pressure (or vacuum) within the tank and then through the hose to pick up what ever it is your picking up. IF you were to open the drain adapter while running the vacuum motor, it would be nothing more than an additional vacuum hose port, but at the bottom of the tank that is filled with all the debris you have inside the tank. IF you were to open the drain adapter while running the vacuum motor, it would be nothing more than an additional vacuum hose port, but at the bottom of the tank that is filled with all the debris you have inside the tank. This would stir up that debris (or water-liquid) adding more work for the filter system, and making the vacuum available for the hose itself much less effective.

I would discourage that because, from my personal experience, leaving it open at the same time as vacuuming causes a lot of moisture droplets to escape via the air exhaust on the unit. It literally can spit water out and dampen the area where the blown air hits. Probably not good for the fan or motor.

Rated 4.4 out of 5 by 47 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Exactly what I was looking for So glad this item is available for our shop vac since we also use the vac to remove water from a small decorative pond with water fall. Now it's easy to drain the shop vac when we change the water. We plan to make a small 12" hose to attach to this so we can better direct the water into the yard drain. June 7, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Product fits! Useful product to drain the wet/dry vac. I use it when I vac out my hot tub for cleaning. April 13, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Quality drain adapter I nice snug fit to this adapter piece and inexpensive too March 29, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Good Product Not sure why this product is online purchase only. Seems to be a standard attachment that is included in one of the many vacuum package offers. My only functional complaint is the hose will not drain while the vacuum is running. Will drain only in off position. If there is a remedy, would like to know. February 17, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Does what I expected Looking for a way to use a shop vac as a way to continuously move water out of a basement. This fits the bill. It fits a Lowes shop vac. February 23, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by secret product? Found this on homedepot.com more by accident than anything. This item is available online only. It is not known to exist by store staff, who helped me look (unsuccessfully) for similar type of product in the plumbing aisle. The drain opening in the shop vacuums are not a standard plumbing size. Really wish this were sold in the store. It would have saved a LOT of time: searching in the plumbing aisle, talking with plumbing supply house staff, and waiting to pickup the online purchase at the store desk. This last was the most frustrating: 4 other people waiting for the one Home Depot staff person who was handling online orders. Other staff came and went during the time I was waiting, but none offered to be of help. Not the fault of the gal at the counter, but rather a lack of management attention! October 11, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect Fit I bought this adaptor for my Craftsman 16 gal. shop vac and it's a perfect fit. I'm very happy with my purchase and the quick delivery October 27, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Not much to it. It works and does what it's supposed to do This adapts the drain port so you can attach a standard garden hose up. I would think this adapter would come with the vacuum. It would be better if it had a shutoff valve built into it. It would make it much easier to use. September 23, 2015
