The tighting nut just spins

I installed the belt sand to my Oscillating Edge/Belt Spindle Sander. I am finished using it and wanted to remove it but all the unlocking nuts just spins and I cant remove the belt sander. Does any one have any ideas on how to remove this nut?
Asked by: Roger
Hopefully by now (2.5 yrs later) you finally figured out you were turning it backwards. It's a LH thread. That said - if it really 'just spins' that means it's stripped. The nut/ the shaft/ or both. Doesn't surprise me - cheap plastic machine made in China - but Ridgid does claim 'lifetime' warranty so let's see if they make good on it. I'd take it back to HD and demand a refund. They might only give you a store credit but I've never had a problem with them ever even questioning me. They sell so much of this stuff - what's one refund here or there...

How are other owners keeping the sleeves from slipping off the larger drums?

I have been relatively successful with slipping carefully measured scraps of paper or fine grit sandpaper between the rubber and the sleeve, but the 2" sleeve is driving me nuts. I think the Diablo Sleeves are a few thousandths larger. Give me some of your ideas.
Asked by: OneCoolWoodshop
As of January 2017, the Diablo sanding sleeves are still over-sized for the larger drums. I used a sheet of printer paper two layers thick in between the drum and the sleeve and it works, but I should not have to deal with such a hack. I purchased the Powertec sleeves from Homedepot.com and had them shipped to the store. Those fit better than the Diablos but the largest one still requires quite a bit of tightening of the drum nut to prevent it from slipping. One other thing I found that helps a little is to put the washer for the 1/2" sleeve on the spindle before putting on the drum, (the same as you would when using the 1/2" sleeve alone), then use the appropriate washer on top of the drum as well, This creates slightly more pressure on the drum causing it to expand just a little more.

Can it grind metal

Asked by: UncleLogan
This is the best tool in my shop. If you mount a good belt you can sharpen chisels and lath tools scary sharp. The belt has no perceptible wear and the machine is loafing compared to sanding a big width of wood. If you look for a high end tool sharpener it will be a belt sander for 4 times the price. I have had this tool for at least 15 years. No problems of any kind. I discovered the sharpening capability when I got my lath. Looked for a way to sharpen turning tools and found that all the tools that gave you the correct angle and allowed curved cutters to move on the abrasive where way out of my price league. I built angle jigs that fit in the miter slot of the infeed table for each of the tools and was astounded at how easy it was to put an edge on the lathe tools. The angle setting feature of the infeed table allows for compound angles which you need in some lathe tools. So then I built a jig for my chisels and can now shave with them. Also I regularly clean edges and round corners on aluminum sheet up to 1/4 inch. It will put a bevel edge or clean burrs on aluminum and brass. All of the folks who said you can not do this should try it once it will open up a new world for projects you can do in your shop. This tool is best value for performance since the hammer.

Is there a dust collection port/attachment?

Can I connect my shop dust collection system to this unit? If so, what size is the port?

I brought it home and the motor hummed but did not spin. if i tipped it on its back it worked. But if I turned it off and back on it would hum and not spin. I took it back to home depot and they gladly exchanged it. I brought the new one home and it worked for exactly 2 days and a total of two projects. Now its just like the first one, it hums but wont spin. http://www.woodtalkonline.com/topic/19726-ridgid-oscillating-beltspindle-sander-trouble/?page=1 Do not buy this trouble.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Devective unit out of the box (motor locked up) I experienced the same problem most of the other 1 star reviewers did. The motor was locked up when I tried to start the unit. I tried to start it without the belt assembly to make sure that the motor was the problem and not the belt itself. I returned the product 2 hours after purchase and I am highly disappointed about the quality control.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Junk Like many other users, I experienced the same problem with the motor locking up on start up. Turn it on and the motor just hums. Returned unit and got a second, same problem. Quality control is horrible, would definitly not recommend this sander to anyone.

Sadly, Rigid does not honor their lifetime service warranty advertised on the box. They conveniently state that they cannot verify my purchase even though I provided the original receipt and serial number as requested. To base their sales on lies and false advertising is unconscionable and most likely illegal. I like their tools but I don't like their company. I will spend my money on other tools from other honest businesses. I will also spread the news about their warranty scam.

This could have been the perfect small shop sander, and in fact when working it is quite outstanding. I have had this one for almost two years, mostly sitting idle. Problem is, too often the motors seize. I have had two of these machines. The first seized (yes I had it to a shop vac) but was stolen before I could return it. The second I also bought from HD and the motor on it too seized. I took it apart, blew it out, cleaned the rotor and it worked fine for a while. Then it seized again. Same thing, worked for a while, seizes up. Even with a powerful dust collector I believe dust is still getting into the motor windings and glazing over. Shame - I really, really could love this machine. Others I have talked to had the same problem. RIGID! FIX THE PROBLEM!!!

I have had it for at least 15 years with no problems. Every shop should have one. It works not only on wood but light weight metals as well. I sharpen all of my cutting tools, including lathe cutters with this tool. The control of angle and power of the belt and drum make this tool is best value for performance since the hammer.
