Customer Questions & Answers

How to replace the backing pad; I have the part but I am

unable to detach the old backing pad. The screws are plastic and have an hexagonal hole, I think. I have not been able to unscrew them. There are four screws, set below the flat surface of the pad, Are those the correct screws to turn to remove the old backing pad? Is there a special tool to unscrew the screws?
Asked by: SometimesSander
Mine has little metal screws and I used a flat head screwdriver, it seems to be a combination head screw but I could not tell if it was meant to take a torx or allen head wrench, I just stuck the screwdriver in the slot going across the entire head.

Customer Reviews

Reconditioned 3 Amp 5 in. Random Orbit Pro Sander is rated 3.5 out of 5 by 41.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bearing Failure I've been professionally using this sander since it first came to market. The I/O switch was ALWAYS a problem, however because it worked so well I was willing to ignore that issue. Then Ridgid decided to redesign the switch and they thought it a good idea to also re design the bearing, I surmise to increase the dust collection. It did increase the dust collection (however so slightly) but now the bearings get clogged with dust. Too bad that in their re design they didn't re design the bearing seals. I installed a first gen bearing on the newly designed model and (using a shop vac for dust extraction) the sander works great without clogging the bearings.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Has done the job for 5+ years and counting I was looking to buy a 6 inch Rigid Sander and was discouraged by the bad reviews that it received... and a little confused. I have owned the 5 inch sander for almost 6 years and I thought I would look at it's reviews for comparison. This sander gets bad reviews so now I'm really confused because I already own this one and I know it's a good sander, it's my go-to sander. I've been woodworking for 30 years and bought this one to replace a Craftsman PSA sander and I have nothing but good things to say about it. It does everything that I expect it do and I've only replaced the pad once... I bought a new one and used the old one for cleaning rust w a piece of Scotch-Brite. The pads get kind of grimy w WD-40 when you do this and you don't want to sand a nice piece of wood with it. I would give this sander 5-stars if it fetched me a Beer but it only gets 4 stars because it does what I bought it for. I don't believe in giving a tool 5 stars for doing what it's supposed to do. Bottom line.... this guy has been a very good shop tool and I expect it to keep chugging along.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Quit on me after one day! I bought a Ridgid table saw about 5 years ago and it has been great in every aspect. I recently purchased several other products, but it is too soon to say how well they perform. The 5" orbit sander was doing great the first day, but the on-off switch is a little difficult to move. On the second day the sander quit working altogether and I am not sure why. I thought maybe it was the switch since it did not feel or appear to be overheated. When I turned on the sander it had a delayed start so maybe it was the switch. I will know more when I try out the new one. If it reacts the same way then maybe there is a design flaw.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Dissapointed I am a Ridgid fan. All of my major woodworking tools are Ridgid and work extremely well...except for the 5" orbital sander. In fact I have purchased five of these sanders and the same problem occurs with all. If you plug in a new sander and turn it on, the pad rotates some but if you put your hand firmly on the pad it will stop rotating. Well, after a few hours of use, each of these has started to spin at an extremely high rpm and cannot be stopped. There is no longer an orbital motion, just a rotating high speed disc. I have accidently cut myself several times with this sander. Also a big problem is that the sander can gouge the wood item being sanded. I have sent these back for repair numerous times and they do not get repaired, but simply cleaned and returned and maintain the same problem. Ridgids tool repair does not understand the issue. The last sander came back two days ago and the store manager saw the problem and gave me a new one. I still have one sander in for repairs...we will see what happens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Sander This is the second-smoothest running sander I've ever used next to my Festool, which cost me $200. I can't speak to the longevity as I just purchased it but it blows my old PC out of the water. I've read some negative comments about the power switch and vacuum hose hitting the work surface. Honestly, one shouldn't use a 2 1/2" vacuum hose in the first place. Too much vacuum actually makes the sander fight you. The smaller hoses clear the work surface easily, and I've never had a single problem with the power switch. So far it has been a great sander for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Sander Just purchased this Ridgid sander to replace a good DeWalt that I've used for a long time. Used for about 3 hours combined time now, and overall I'm extremely happy with it. Very comfortable to use and very quiet. The adjustable speed is great - faster for a lower grit, slow it down for a finishing higher grit. The dust catcher is like any other - does OK, not a selling feature though. It is however movable, as it has a spring-structure that lets it collapse and move if sanding in tight quarters. The only part of this sander that I'm not crazy about is the on/off switch design. Turning it on is easy, but shutting it off can be difficult without holding it up and rotating it, all while the sander is still on. This might just be something that will become easier with more use however. Overall, an excellent sander. If you're considering a cheap entry-level orbital sander, do yourself a favor and spend a few extra bucks and get this. The bag is a really nice touch too.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worked great after repairs for service I purchased this 5" RO sander some time ago, and have had good luck with it on many projects. I started having problems with the sander slowing down, and randomly starting and stopping while sanding. I tried quite a few things to preclude user problems, and finally got an O.K. to send it in for service. The sander finally came back after several months, and was in top shape, having been repaired at the Ridgid Service center nearest me. We've been running it for several months now, and it performs like a champ, with hard sanding all day long. I'd buy another if needed +

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointing I own several of Ridgid's power tools. For the money they all perform well. Their 5" sander is disappointing. I've had one for two years, I use it rarely and it no longer works. I would understand it if I used it for commercial purposes, but I use it maybe four times a year.
