This is the second-smoothest running sander I've ever used next to my Festool, which cost me $200. I can't speak to the longevity as I just purchased it but it blows my old PC out of the water. I've read some negative comments about the power switch and vacuum hose hitting the work surface. Honestly, one shouldn't use a 2 1/2" vacuum hose in the first place. Too much vacuum actually makes the sander fight you. The smaller hoses clear the work surface easily, and I've never had a single problem with the power switch. So far it has been a great sander for me.

I was looking to buy a 6 inch Rigid Sander and was discouraged by the bad reviews that it received... and a little confused. I have owned the 5 inch sander for almost 6 years and I thought I would look at it's reviews for comparison. This sander gets bad reviews so now I'm really confused because I already own this one and I know it's a good sander, it's my go-to sander. I've been woodworking for 30 years and bought this one to replace a Craftsman PSA sander and I have nothing but good things to say about it. It does everything that I expect it do and I've only replaced the pad once... I bought a new one and used the old one for cleaning rust w a piece of Scotch-Brite. The pads get kind of grimy w WD-40 when you do this and you don't want to sand a nice piece of wood with it.
I would give this sander 5-stars if it fetched me a Beer but it only gets 4 stars because it does what I bought it for. I don't believe in giving a tool 5 stars for doing what it's supposed to do.
Bottom line.... this guy has been a very good shop tool and I expect it to keep chugging along.

I've been professionally using this sander since it first came to market. The I/O switch was ALWAYS a problem, however because it worked so well I was willing to ignore that issue. Then Ridgid decided to redesign the switch and they thought it a good idea to also re design the bearing, I surmise to increase the dust collection. It did increase the dust collection (however so slightly) but now the bearings get clogged with dust. Too bad that in their re design they didn't re design the bearing seals. I installed a first gen bearing on the newly designed model and (using a shop vac for dust extraction) the sander works great without clogging the bearings.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Bowdude66 Excellent tool But Ridgid is starting to slack off on features.
This sander is everything I wanted and operated without a flaw. I'm starting to wonder though if Ridgid is starting to slack off on quality. The other electric Ridgid tools have nice long rubber coated cordes and lighted plugs with Velcro cord wraps, not this one. Whats going on guys? you are starting to worry me !

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by wsmiller Quit on me after one day!
I bought a Ridgid table saw about 5 years ago and it has been great in every aspect. I recently purchased several other products, but it is too soon to say how well they perform. The 5" orbit sander was doing great the first day, but the on-off switch is a little difficult to move. On the second day the sander quit working altogether and I am not sure why. I thought maybe it was the switch since it did not feel or appear to be overheated. When I turned on the sander it had a delayed start so maybe it was the switch. I will know more when I try out the new one. If it reacts the same way then maybe there is a design flaw.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by steeveW Worked great after repairs for service
I purchased this 5" RO sander some time ago, and have had good luck with it on many projects. I started having problems with the sander slowing down, and randomly starting and stopping while sanding. I tried quite a few things to preclude user problems, and finally got an O.K. to send it in for service.
The sander finally came back after several months, and was in top shape, having been repaired at the Ridgid Service center nearest me. We've been running it for several months now, and it performs like a champ, with hard sanding all day long.
I'd buy another if needed +

I am not a heavy duty user of power sanders. I would say in the past year the total time spent with this sander would be less than 5 hours. It stopped vibrating when I started hooking it up to my Rigid shop vac to keep the dust down in the garage. Now when I start it, it simply spins with no vibration at all. With quality such as that I will purchase a different brand when this tool gets replaced. Yes, there is a warranty, but I like most Americans did not register my product when purchased. Guess I learned my lesson.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Rantz2040 Fantastic sander
The sander is fantastic, with 60-80 grit discs it tears material away with 180 grit it sands it baby butt smooth. The dust collection bag is amazing, with the spring inside instead of a plastic frame and that allows it to get into tighter corners. The variable speed is great and easy to use, and with the soft start its a lot more forgiving than the traditional hit the button and youre off. The dust collection is far better than my dewalt or makita sanders. I don't know if it was an intentional design but Ive been able to use the rubber padding near the base of the sander for a lower handle quite comfortably. There was some glue on the speed control knob but for a reconditioned tool that I payed less than half of a new one with the same factory warranty I cant complain. Only drawback is this sander is a bit heavier than the rest I own but it's not too much to be of any problems.
