What's the difference between an impact driver and a pulse driver?

Asked by: Ryan
This impulse driver uses hydraulic oil to drive the impact mechanism. The regular impact uses a traditional mechanical driver. My only concern would be longevity. You have to change the oil in your car, tools, jacks so you will need to at some point do the same with this but there is no way to do so. It is less torquey and quieter so weigh your needs.

I've been a lifelong Ridgid fan buying everything from shopvacs to mitersaws. I bought this impact in April 2016 and use it every day. The biggest let down of this tool and that I feel they should advertise is that it doesn't work in the cold. It spins fine but as soon as it goes to impact it just stops turning. Had I known this would happen I would have bought a different tool. The strength of this tool also lacks compared to other impacts not being able to backoff nuts on bolts that other impacts tightened. This tool should be labeled as interior work even then it feels twice as heavy as most impacts. The sound difference is great but not enough of a selling point for me to recommend to anyone.

The "Pulse" action the reduces the impact volume is achieved by feeding part of the force back into the tool. That creates what you might refer to as kickback. Under some conditions it can be hard on your hand and wrist and under those conditions, my arm-wrist-hand fatigued fairly quickly. Personally, I'd opt for the noise over the pulse buffering.

It has a different feel to it when driving because of the different style of impact. Once I got used to it though I have found that I can still get the finesse I need on mode 1 and this things can drive like crazy on mode 3. The noise reduction is really nice, especially when working inside. This is now my go to driver.

The hydraulic impacting mechanism has more power than comparable higher-end brushless drivers. The feel and build quality are more like that of a more industrial grade pneumatic impact guns. The acoustic benefits are minimal as far as actual SPL reduction, but working with it in a closet, the sound was far less grating than a comparable non-hydraulic guns. This thing punches well above its price point and with the lifetime warranty it is a no-brainer right now.

I have used it around the house but as well on commercial/industrial concrete job sites. This drill is very durable in the field.

I find it takes a bit of learning curve to adjust for the soft or gradual pulse verses the mechanical ratchet of the older drivers. This is one of the newer brushless tools and I am looking forward to many years of service from this tool. The lifetime warranty for both the battery, charger and tool is a fantastic deal.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from RIDGID TOOLS JUST KEEP GETTING BETTER RIDGID TOOLS JUST KEEP GETTING BETTER As the picture clearly shows, I'm a Ridgid Tool fan. I've been using Ridgid Tools for years and have never had a need to use the awesome Lifetime Warrantee. That speaks volumes about how reliable they are. I use them in various conditions, hot, cold, wet, dry, snow, rain, etc., doing jobs that are tough on tools based on torque and duration. Of all my Ridgid tools, the impact driver is the one I use most. I've used it for everything, from boring 2 1/2" holes into roof rafters in old houses that had hardened from baking in the sun for years, to boring through metals, to driving thousands of screws into picket fences, drywall and subflooring, etc. Never a problem. Then, when I read Ridgid was coming out with the 18-Volt Stealth Force Impulse Driver with a 3-Speed brushless motor, hydraulic oil pulse and tri-beam LED lighting, I was thrilled and I set out immediately to obtain one. When it arrived, I couldn't wait for the new batteries to charge, however, because all of Ridgid's 18-Volt batteries fit all of Ridgid's 18-Volt tools, I didn't have to. I was able to use a fully charged battery that I already had. I immediately began putting the Stealth Force Driver to the test. I didn't do extensive, scientific, statistical, specs tests with it (there will plenty of those online soon, I'm sure). I did tests to see how it compared to my earlier generation driver that I have used extensively and have been very satisfied with. The first thing I did was move the switch to speed setting #2. Then I fastened three 2x4's together. I used a 1 1/2" spade bit on the outsides end pieces to make a counter sink for a nut and bolt and I used a 1/2" drill bit for the bolt hole. Then I used the new driver to tighten the nuts on the bolts. Next I drove in several 4 1/2" landscape timber lags to ensure the 2x4's were solidly fastened together. I then used various sized screws and lags and just started driving them in everywhere on the board, top, sides, and ends. The final step was taking a 1/2x3 flanged lag bolt and driving it in, then taking it out over and over (I had to stop several times to let the bolt cool down and as a reminder to everyone, using these high power tools will cause the screws to become very HOT. Handle with care). I didn't drill any pilot holes for these tests because I wanted see how it would do without them and so, of course, the 2x4's split several times. The Stealth has a different sound and feel which took some getting used to. It is so quiet and smooth, it didn't seem like it could possibly be driving the screws in faster. However, after I started doing the side-by-sides with my old one, it quickly became clear the new impulse driver was faster. I then switched to speed setting #3 and drove the 1/2" lag in and out several more times. It even drove the flange into the wood easily. I could actually smell the wood burning on several occasions. Then I switched back to my old driver for comparison to speed setting #3 and I'll have to agree with the claim on Home Depot's description at the top of this page which states, "The Stealth Force Impulse Driver is up to twice as fast as standard impact drivers". Finally, I tried the new driver on speed setting #1. I attached a utility knife blade container to the wall using 1" drywall screws. I was able to get each screw perfectly positioned without smashing the container to smithereens...a problem for earlier models. I can't attest to battery longevity yet, but after testing for over an hour, the battery still had all four bars lit on the fuel gauge. I recently got one of the new Ridgid 18-Volt 5Ah batteries and I'm betting with that powerhouse attached to this new driver, changing batteries will become a thing of the past. The Stealth is slightly larger and almost 10oz. heavier than my old driver. It weighs 3lbs. 1.5oz (tool only); 4lbs. 2.2oz. with included 2.0Ah battery attached. The old one weighs 2lbs. 7.7oz (tool only). However, the difference is so small, I didn't notice it when doing side-by-sides. In a world where a lot of things seem to be going down in quality and dependability, it is refreshing to know there is a product line that is still reliable. When I pull the trigger on any of my Ridgid Tools, I know that from start to finish, it will run faithfully and true...without fail. Features: -Brushless motor. -Hydraulic oil pulse driving mechanism. -Standard 1/4" hex chuck with one hand/quick load feature. -Tri-beam lights with separate grip switch independent of trigger. -Hex Grip handle. -Three speed settings. -No load max speeds: 1000/1800/2400. Impacts: 0-1700. -Two Ridgid 2.0Ah hyper lithium ion batteries. -Dual chemistry charger. -Ridgid tool bag. -Ridgid Lifetime Service Agreement.

Thanks Rigid for the upgrade in this impact, and I'm excited about it being brushless too! Great tool!!
