Multi-Tool CFM Requirements and Compressor

This question is from Tri-Stack 5 Gal. Compressor and Pneumatic JobMax Combo Kit

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the multi-tool says it requires 18 CFM for it's duty cycle (which is absolutely INSANE might I add). How is a 4.6 SCFM supposed to keep up with that? In order to reach 18 CFM, you basically need an industrial sized, multi-thousand dollar air compressor. Is this not the case?

Rated 3.4 out of 5 by 30 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by The best compressor for serious DIYer I had an oil filled air compressor before and it was really messy, at one point the oil exploded and it was all over my basement. When I looked for the replacement, there were 3 requirements: (1) Non-oil filled, (2) Good SCFM for me to use my Ingersoll Rand 231g impact wrench (3) Portable lightweight for different jobs. This tri-stack compressor is a Godsend, it meets everything I need. With 4.9 SCFM @90 psi, it is even more powerful than my old oil-filled compressor and I use it to change my tires (multiple cars) twice a year. As a serious DIYers, I use the top portion (portability) for air nailers and staplers when I work on wood related projects. One thing though, it tripped the 15A breaker in my old house but it is fine with my existing house. Even I use it on 2nd floor outlet where it is far away from the main panel, it is fine. Anyways, I wired a 20A outlet in both my basement and garage for other this as well as for other powerful tools, so this is not an issue for me. I don't know what else you can ask for, this compressor has very high build quality with 2 x air pressure gauges are oil filled. Everything is so solid. The other thing I really like is the quarter turn drain valves, I cannot go back to those cheap screws type drain valve. Absolutely love it, strongly recommend for serious DIYers. I had it for 3 years and I believe I have used it long enough to write a detailed review. February 22, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great, quiet, versatile compressor Bought this compressor as an upgrade for a smaller Ridgid compressor. It smokes it in every regard. Has tons of capacity for any type of nailer... a noticeable difference from my previous compressor. It is also MUCH quieter and has much shorter repress time. The fact that you can put the noise outside and keep the tank close is the icing on the cake. It really makes for tons of flexibility, saves space and extension cords, too. The unit is also built very, very well. This is by far the nicest compressor i've ever owned. The only thing I could possibly wish for is a dolly kit or wheels, but it is light enough when you separate the parts. Thanks for the great product! July 21, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by this may help fix the problem I purchased this compressor about a year ago and have found that it looks high tech and powerful. Which it actually is. That is when it works. I have been going crazy with it since I first used it. Here is what I did. I went to the ridgid parts website and ordered a new start up capacitor and a new overload protector. Now it works great. Maybe they got a bad load of capacitors. At any rate, it cost me about 15.00 to replace those parts and now my compressor works as good as it looks. I'm now very happy with it. June 25, 2015
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by On/Off switch is not durable. On/Off switch is not very durable. I have to replace it and I'm sure with all of the additional components attached to the switch that it will be VERY expensive. Too bad a good machine otherwise has a poorly designed switch. It is a part that is used all the time; it should last. Too bad. June 29, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by compressor broke 8 months of use. normal operation, no abuse to compressor, just broke. This is the second Ridgid compressor I have owned. The first one broke ( reed valve failed and destroyed the piston and cylinder) took it back to get it replaced, out of luck had to buy a new one. Thought I would give Ridgid one more chance, Bought the Tri Stack unit. Broke after very light normal use after 8 months. Was still under warranty, was fixed and returned in 4 weeks. Suggestion for Ridgid. Replace compressor when customer brings it back for repair. I had to buy another compressor to use while my damaged one was being repaired. I will not buy another Ridgid tool..... I hope that the repaired compressor will last for years to come but I,m not counting on it. October 11, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Outstanding compressor I bought this compressor 10 years ago to replace a piece of garbage Craftsman that went south. I have had excellent service from this tool. It flawlessly performs every time I have an opportunity to use it. It has built my shop, run all of my pneumatic tools and provides plenty of air for clearing sawdust and other debris. Not sure why others are having issues other than it is loud when running. I have recommended this compressor to friends and family, and several bought the same model several years ago. Theirs are still working well to this day. February 14, 2015
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by good features, un use able Very loud, will drive you out of the room. Requires too many amps to power up compressor motor. New home on 20 amp outlet and wouldn't kick over. Must plug in next to breaker box (shorter wire length). This was a reconditioned unit-the ample availability of them speaks to the quality. December 12, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Unreliable, Warranty Poor This compressor is noisy and draws hard for power. It is very unreliable and warranty support is poor. I have had mine about a year and it has spent the past 4 months in the repair facility before it was "fixed". After less than 24 hours after getting it home it was not working again. Parts for the unit are impossible to come by and if you check for them online some are listed as obsolete and there is no listing for compatible replacements. The best advice for this is stay away!!! Run away. It looks like a great little unit but is very unreliable. March 24, 2014
