Customer Questions & Answers

Will the cordless grinder accept the 5/8" hole cut off discs?

Asked by: Anonymous
Yes. Recessed wheels are best, but I have used flat discs as well (contrary to literature with the machine). It might take threaded arbor disks as well, but I have not tried any.

your add says you can count on free batteries, free parts and free service for the entire life of your tool. however your website says only batteries that come in kits qualify for replacement this grinder is sold only as bare tool which is it??? the 2 kits I have bought only have 1.5 hour battery so if I buy 3 hour it would not be covered?? if I an wrong please send a letter to verify
Asked by: Nick
most of the ridgid tools are sold without batteries so they dont have to cover them. They should offer all there tools with batteries for a little extra money and they would sell better.

Compatible Battery

Are the batteries contained in the R9200 combo kit (two - R84087 4.0 Ah batteries) compatible with the R86040B cordless grinder? They are not listed under the features section of the grinder.
Asked by: gh8toes
This works on all the 18v Ridgid batteries. I recommend the 4.0Ah batteries, since the 2.5Ah batteries will die much quicker.

trouble shooting

I have an R86040. It quit running. The right light in front of the power button will come on if the tool is turned on when I plug in a battery. That is the only response I get to anything I've tried in attempting to get this tool to work. Very disappointed so far. This grinder has maybe 20 minutes of gentle use since I've owned it. I usually use a corded grinder. This is just used for quick light jobs. And it's already junk.
Asked by: sirwingnut
make sure the switch is in the off position before installing the battery.

X4 18-Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless 4-1/2 in. Angle Grinder is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 61.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst Rigid I have ever purchased This is the worst thing I have ever purchased with a rigid name on it. Rigid should be ashamed to put their name on it. I am upset that Home Depot will even sell it. I can not put any pressure on the grinder without the red light flashing and the grinder turning off. I tried cutting 3/8" all thread with a cut off wheel and it took 4 times as long as it would with a plug in grinder because I could not put ANY pressure on the blade without turning off. Grinding metal with the included disc is not any better, I have several other Rigid cordless tools and am really satisfied with them, but this cordless grinder is a big piece of JUNK.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not all I have almost all of the ridgid cordless tools, well a bunch of them anyway, not to mention several corded rigid tools. I have always been more than impressed with all of there tools to say the least. That was until I bought this 18V grinder. Even with the 4.0 big battery in it, it lacks any kind of power for cutting, even w a thin disk, or grinding. I worked for Black and Decker / Dewalt for years. This is worse than anything that they ever put out by far. I hate to leave negative feedback about anything, especially RIDGID tools, but this grinder is terrible. Sorry guys, you missed the boat on this one.

It is handy if you have no power available, but it will use up any battery very fast. Using it as a disk sander, I get about 10-15 minutes continued use before I need to swap batteries again. If you have to then it will work, otherwise a corded grinder will always be better. For me, till they have a cordless sander that meets my needs.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from A rare Ridgid disappointment I bought this tool this week to use on a job site where 110v power would have been unavailable. Needed to cut off 3/8" bolts flush with concrete...not a big deal. And yes, even though the tool came with the grinding wheel, I bought several thin cut-off wheels for this work. From the very first cut, with a full charge on my Li 4ah, 18v battery, this tool immediately flashed its overheat warning lights. Even when I backed off and applied less pressure, the tool was not up top the task. It would shut down and need a brief coming off period before I could resume. And this was a fresh out of the box tool! Very time-consuming and frustrating. My son had his much older Ryobi cordless grinder with a new Li battery and it worked like a champ. I'm not a big Ryobi fan and I won't abandon my Ridgid cordless set, but Ridgid really needs to go back to the drawing board on this one. I paid $99 for it and with its severe limitations it's not worth a fraction of that price. I'm taking it back. I hope they can improve this model soon!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Did the job Added this to my Rigid tool collection. Did some cutting and grinding on my car fender. Worked great but it eats up my standard Rigid batteries, so if I was going to use this more I would buy an extended battery.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Money waste This is the first rigid tool that I'm not happy with. It kills the battery in minutes and shuts down if you use any pressure. Buy a corded grinder

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very nice for a small project. I would buy this again. Received this about two weeks ago. I have used it several times on different items. This grinder will replace my air cut off grinder. Can not see starting up the compressor when this is just a battery snapping in, away from working. It okay as far as power goes, not what you would get from a 120v grinder. I would not recommend it for a large project unless you have a good number of batteries (Goes through a freshly charged 3 amp 18v battery in about 8 to 10 minutes). The cost is fairly high. but it should wash out when you take the LSA into account. It is really to early to give a opinion on durability. I would buy this again.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great for cutting soft butter Was excited to try my new Rigid cordless grinder since someone walked off with my Dewalt grinder. Had some other Rigid tools that worked well so I figured this would be too. Wrong!!! This was a toy compared to my old 18v Dewalt. Does it cut? Maybe some soft butter but certainly not steel. I used it to cut 3/8 bolts that secure handles on shipping containers we sell and the dreaded overload lights flash as soon as the disc touches the bolt. Soon after the thing craps out. I returned it to Home Depot and got a Dewalt. Problem Solved. Do not buy this tool!
