Will this sprayer work with Thompson's water seal on a deck?

Asked by: bill
We tried using the clear Thompsons Water Seal with this sprayer and the fan tip kept getting clogged. We could never get the fan tip to actually work unless we had plain water running through it. We ended up having to return the sprayer.

Customer Reviews

2.5 gal. Deck Sprayer is rated 2.9 out of 5 by 68.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great I bought this to spray deck stain. But I ended up using it for Round Up, Flea spray, Odo-Ban, and bleach. It is nice because it comes with multiple nozzles. Nice thick tank and easy to pump it up. The pressure release works well too. Seems higher quality than a lot of the "throwaway" pump sprayers these days.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not the best sprayer for semi-transparent stain The RL Flo-Master sprayer model 1125D is recommended for various Behr products with one of them being semi-transparent concrete stain. I tried using both of the nozzles included in the box (poly and brass) and the spray did not come out even or in a fine mist spray, it sprayed hard on the outside edges and light in the center. The label on the can mentions to apply the stain using a "high quality pump sprayer at a fine spray setting". I can't say this was a high quality pump sprayer. There are 2 positive features of this sprayer, the pressure release switch on the side and the continuous spray option on the wand. A better option to consider is using an airless electric sprayer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Sprayer for a Great Price I used this to spray a 85' redwood fence with a water proofing stain and sealer. It sprayed very evenly and went on uniformly. The clean up was simple and easy. Re-used 3 weeks later to do my Bedroom balcony (slate tile) with a concrete sealer and again it worked perfectly. Very nice product.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Was not what I expected. I thought that I could use this sprayer to paint my deck. I found that not all stains are comparable with this sprayer. Some are too thick to spray properly. My fault for not reading the label.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No problems so far I used this once to apply acrylic sealer to my 300sqft patio. This was my first time doing such a thing and this sprayer worked fine. I made sure to filter the sealer through a paint filter first and had no issue with clogging. The pump and valve mechanisms worked well. My only wish is that this sprayer had a window or was clear to allow me to see how much material was left inside.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Makes Staining Much Easier I bought this to try. It's only $20 and if it didn't work, it was worth the money to try it out. Overall, this made applying stain to the deck quicker and easier. There are some precautions though. If there is any wind, be careful for over-spray on bushes, landscape or the house. The other precaution is more of a notice, the sprayer does go through more spray than the conventional brush. Just keep that in mind. If you want to save hours, buy an extra gallon of stain!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from For $20 it works great This is a simple and straightforward sprayer with a pressure relief valve and viton seals for using solvent based stains. I sprayed my deck with Penofin oil based Brazilian oil stain. Coverage was excellent and much faster than a brush, pad or roller. I also own a professional grade airless sprayer but that piece of equipment is a complete overkill for 16 x 12 deck and steps (nevermind the cleanup). This 2.5 gallon sprayer is ideal for spraying deck stain. I used the plastic fan tip and saved the brass one for later. The brass one was stowed inside the jug and rattled around. I thought I would use the plastic one and it worked great. Of course, you have to mix your stain so any solids are in suspension. The tip never plugged. It just kept spraying a even pattern. Clean up is a must using paint thinner (mineral spirits). I used about a quart in one pint increments. The instructions are written well but the graphics are too small for me to read. It would help if there was simply an exploded view to tell you how it went together. Ikea does more with pictures. Flo Master would do well to benchmark them.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from one time use... I bought this sprayer to use with the Behr sealer that is says it is "designed for". I was sealing about 900sq,ft of pavers. for the first 15 minutes it worked great! After that is started clogging and the spray became uneven, but manageable. I needed to do 2 coats so after the first coat I spent over 30min cleaning the entire sprayer (per directions) and when I came back to use it it sprayed for about 2min. I ended up having to roll the second coat on. I do not recommend this for the Behr concrete sealer. I will be returning it, thankfully home depot has a great return policy!
