Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by TC Worked well for a few hours...
I purchased this to help remove the roots of about 30 bushes that sat between my back yard and my neighbor's. I used this along with a shovel to remove most of them and it worked well. It felt nice to swing, cut roots with one side and the pick on the other side allowed me to get into the dirt behind the roots and pull through them. When I tried to pull through some of the roots on the last stump, the attached picture was the result.
I purchased this for $25 and it broke before I'd used it for 5 hours. You can buy a replacement handle for $13 but if I could go back in time to when I made the original purchase, I'd spend an extra $5 and get model with the fiberglass handle.

I bought one of these in the morning, and by lunch I needed to return it. The handle broke when I tried to pry a root up. The store associate said that Home Depot could only do a one-for-one exchange. They did let me pay the extra $5 for the fiberglass handled version. How is it possible that my dad can still use his wood handled pick after 20 years, but mine broke in a matter of hours? It's a case of "they just don;t make them like they used to".

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by JackK The wood handle WILL break
The wood handle cracked at where it meets the yellow plastic. I purchased this thinking the other reviewers are just big guys that used too much force. I was wrong! I'm 140 lb 5'5" and broken this after 4 hours of use. I was digging up small roots in soft soil.
I have no idea what the warranty is. Doesn't say it on this site or the actual tool itself. My Home Depot will refund my money if I can find the receipt and it's within 6 month from purchase date.
They do sell the same replacement handle for around $15.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by ToolFool Poor Quality Handles
This item, like the 2.5 lb pick mattock with wooden handle purchased a year earlier, have very poor wood in the handles. The grain is not consistent with that of a quality handle and they both split at knots. In fact, one of them exploded like a bad baseball bat.

It broke within 5 minutes of light use. What a waste of money.

I wouldn't recommend this axe. Handle snapped half during first use. Was attempting to dig under a root. Ax never hit anything of resistance.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by UnwittingStooge Strong handle, WEAK head.
I used this pick mattock (pick ax) for about 10 minutes in soft soil with 1/2 to 1-inch thick roots. The head bent to the point where the tool is unusable in just that 10 minutes. I hit no rocks, no large tree roots, no clay, just a couple of grape vine roots that were at most 1-inch diameter. The price for this tool is outrageous given the very, VERY low quality and strength of the metal. Spend a few more dollars and get a real, hand-made steel head.
The handle is strong (as far as I can tell from 5-10 minutes of use) and a good length, but the most important part of the tool is far too weak and cheap for a thirty dollar tool. I'd rather spend double and get something that is strong and durable.
I would NOT recommend this for use in normal soil with thumb-width roots. For use in sand, it's probably fine...but so is your foot at that point!

Handle broke within 4 months of purchase. Broke prying concrete block out of ground; nothing extreme.
