Wish I had read the reviews before buying!
Don't understand why Home Depot sells this anymore after seeing the reviews and my own experience.
The splitting edge is dull and blunt, almost a bull nose style.Just bounced off soft pine. Can't take it back because I tried to put an edge on it. After 15 minutes of grinding and filing still couldn't get an edge that would penetrate soft wood. .Going to take it to my local chainsaw shop and they will charge me 10 bucks to grind it and make it usable.
It might be usable as door stop but it sure don't split wood

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Jeff Splits wood great until...
This started out great, did a wonderful job on some maple blow downs. Problem was after about one cord of wood the head started to separate from the handle. It appears that it is only epoxied in. Knowing that this would happen I'd spend the money on a better product. If it could be returned, it would.

Not worth the gas it costs to bring it home. Used it twice with a wedge and it failed miserably. Finished it off on a rotten stump and the result in the posted photo.

I've seen alot of bad reviews for this, and kinda shocked. I've had mine for about 2 years. I've used it to split giant logs, 10" wide, to smaller logs, 4" wide, and not had an issue with it. I have split over 200 logs with this maul. This maul is used to split logs, with little effort from the user. I use this on logs which have dried out, like cut and dried out for atleast 6 months. If the logs you are trying to split are fresh, ie. still have moisture in them from being fresh cut, the maul isn't going to preform as expected. If the logs are dried/cured, there won't be an issue at all.
8 lbs for the head is perfect. There is no issue to raise it properly when holding it the correct way. If you hold it wrong, you're going to miss, and potentially hit something you don't want to hit. Like yourself.
I have had my family and friends use it and they enjoy it. I would recommend this for anyone who wants to get into splitting wood.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by ceramist Head came off
I bought this splitting maul several months ago and finally used it to split wood. After about 6 hours of use the head came off. Too long to get a refund. I should have read the reviews before I bought it. Now I have an expensive splitting wedge! Why does Homedepot keep selling these defective products.
