Customer Questions & Answers

is this the best product for torn drywall before re-mudding?

I had to remove paint by scraping and pulling it off the wall cause it was not adhered to the wall well. Some of the drywall got torn in that process. Is this what I need to use before mudding the walls? Thanks. I tryed adding a pic but it won't work.
Asked by: cowboy
That's exactly what I used it for, and my drywall was TORN UP badly... I had giant areas where the face paper entirely pulled away with the wallpaper paste, and this did the trick. I sanded it first with 80 grit, lightly, to remove any flapping paper. Then wiped gently with a barely damp towel, and painted on the PRO-999 (Rx-35.) This caused slight bubbling, as I thought it would, but after a two hour cure, I knocked those bubbles off with 80 grit again, LIGHTLY, and re-applied the sealer and that worked great.

How long should it be appied on wall before wallpaper can be applied

Asked by: Vanessa
Directions on label says that when painting over top of this to wait 1 - 1 1/2 hrs. I myself am more conservative and would wait 2 hrs to be on safe side & make sure not to over apply it as well.

Does it work on glossy surfaces

Asked by: Ken
It's worked great for me on glossy surfaces, but I also take extra measures as well. I wash surface(s) completely to ensure it's clean & I also De-gloss surface(s) to enhance adhesion of sealer as well.

I am an experienced DIY renovator and have completed five home remodels and hundreds of individual projects such as flooring, wall tile, cabinets and woodworking, paint, etc. The Rx-35 was recommended by several stores (including another nationally-known paint chain) as a remedy for covering wallpaper and wallpaper backing in preparation for painting. The circumstance was wallpaper that had been applied over drywall without priming or sizing, making it impossible to completely remove without extensive drywall damage. The Rx-35 performed poorly in this instance causing repeated bubbling. It is also clear which doesn't allow wallpaper patterns to be adequately hidden. However, I switched to a shellac-based product (Zinsser BIN) and it performed flawlessly. It covered/sealed with no bubbling and the white color provided a perfect base for painting. Forgo the ease of cleaning up water-based products such as Rx-25, I would recommend an oil/shellac based product, specifically Zinsser, over water-based solutions in these circumstances as they are much more reliable in their final results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful product Just used this product to prime my textured ceiling. Most primers pull off the texture. Initially RX-35 seemed watery, but it went on smoothly without doing any damage whatsoever to the texturing. Because it doesn't seem to soak in, it took less paint than I had expected. It seems to leave a protective barrier, so that the ceiling paint also goes on more smoothly. Best of all, because the ceiling is no longer porous, I used much less ceiling paint that I would normally need to use. I also used it on large areas of the wall that were damaged and had been spackled and needed priming. RX-35 worked equally well there. Brushes and rollers cleaned up easily with soap and water.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for treating walls after removing wall paper!!! We had a whole house of wallpaper to remove and this stuff helped us immensely. Some of the walls had alot of torn drywall and remenant glue and this stuff sealed right over it. We primed over this product with no bubbling or issues what so ever. We even left the wall paper in some hard to reach spots and sealed over it with this product then primed and painted and you cant even tell we left the wallpaper. Highly recommend for treating walls that have had wallpaper removed

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works as advertised I had the paint guy shake the can before use. I removed glued in place FRP panels. I had a lot of torn paper, down to gypsum in some spots. For years I made my own version of this out of yellow carpenters glue and concrete bonding agent. My mixture was for small areas. When the glue mixture dried, I could use easy sand to repair the drywall without the edges lifting. I rolled on a heavy coat of RX-35 and let it dry overnight. I patched and skimmed the damage, and had no lifting or bubbles. The product looks white in the can, but goes on and dries clear. It is thick and goes on like regular latex paint. I thought the price was good. I'm a user from now on.

The builder had put wallpaper directly onto the drywall in our house(no primer or paint or sizing), so every time we strip wallpaper, we end up with some damaged drywall paper. I had read about this product online as a recommended first step before doing a skim coat of mud. This is supposed to keep the drywall paper from bubbling up when you put on the wet mud. I still ended up with some bubbles, but fewer than I have experienced in the past when I didn't use a product like this. I think I could have put this product on thicker in some spots. The spots where I put it on thicker seemed to seal much better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Great! The RX-35 worked exactly as advertised. It did a great job at sealing some exposed drywall paper (the brown fibers) after I had to remove wallpaper. I was able to then skim coat over the RX-35 with no problems. Also, I used it to lock down walls where I had removed a ton of wallpaper glue because I didn't want any glue remnants to affect my paint job. I was able to use a normal latex primer over the RX-35. This product works great! Make sure you let it dry as long as the directions say, and remember it will take longer if it's humid.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product; highly recommended I used RX-35 to seal drywall that was torn to the brown paper after removing a glued-on mirror. It sealed the surface and I subsequently skim-coated the wall with no problems. It worked as advertised.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So far, a real problem solver. I used this product on a 100-year old ceiling that was cracked and on horsehair plaster walls from which old wallpaper was removed (in anticipation of new wallpaper.) I think it replaces the Gardz product. After removing loose paint from the ceiling and filling "problems" with joint compound, I applied this. Then painted it with "Ceiling White." Looks amazing. Up close, I can still see cracks. They are not breached, however. Hopefully things will stay that way. Note that this primer is clear (but can be tinted, I think). Because of its "thickness" and "tackiness," it created a great surface for wallpapering. (I did fill unevenesses with compound, and sand, before applying this primer. I was careful, but not overly meticulous. I think this product helps "cover a multitude" of "sins," as it were. Grateful.
