I installed the 12-zone Rain Bird into an existing sprinkler control system. The wiring was already in place, I just numbered each wire before I disconnected.
My old system had a feature in which you could change water cycles from summer and winter. This unit does not have that feature. But it attacks the same problem a different way. It has a sensor that will increase or decrease the amount of time to flow each valve. Don't worry it can be shut off if you wish. Since the weather is a little hotter than when I installed the unit, I have found that the timer increased the time of flow by 6%. I like this new feature compared to my old timer.
Plus if I want to shut off the system temporarily, no problem. If I turn that feature on, the timer will shut off for a few days and will resume normal use on its own. I don't have to recheck the timer.
This unit also has a temporary shut down if it rains. Since we have not had any rain since it has been installed, I have no opinion. But I am looking forward to seeing that feature in service, we really need the rain!
This unit was very easy to install. And it was very easy to program. At first I used the old times from the old timer to test the unit. Later I used the included DVD from the manufacturer, to design the proper amount and time of sprinkler use. I found that the amount of time I was using as my former guide was fairly close to what was recommended. But, the advise given was better, because it showed me to water more often a day thus giving the plants a chance to absorb the water.
I recommend this Rain Bird unit to anyone. I could have saved a few dollars and not got the features of rain and weather monitoring. But I think it was well worth the price difference.
Here are a few pictures of the backyard. Grass, plants, and a pool water valve is all operated by the Rain Bird.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Gardener Sensor Never Stops Watering While Raining
I've owned this device for about a year now, it has never stopped watering during the rain, as a matter of fact it waters according to its seasonal programing regardless of rainy weather.
It suppose to regulate More or less water as per its historical data, but when it rains it does not stop and it does not change its watering amounts. Rain-bird said it might have not rained enough? I eventually got it to stop by directly watering the sensor for about 5 minutes, this defeats the purpose of the sensor device. It rains little in my area, however, it has rained pretty good for 2 to 3 days in a row a few times, yet the sensor has never stopped watering once for about a year now. This device is not cheap.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by TruthTeller Rain Bird does NOT warranty their equipment and rain gauge stopped working... would like more manual override ability
So, this pretty much does everything that it says it'll do, but 1) the rain gauge quit working and 2) I want more manual override.
For 1), If you notice any problems with you unit, you better hope it happens within your store's return period because RAIN BIRD DOES NOT PROVIDE ANY WARRANTY. Go ahead and google it. I will not buy another piece of equipment from them because of this. I installed this in the fall and didn't notice issues. Come Spring, it kept watering despite raining. I double, triple checked all troubleshooting and even though it indicates that it is connected via LED, it didn't work. I tried pouring 16 ounces of water directly onto it and it still watered.
For 2), the big issues I had was that I live in Colorado and we get some really whacky Spring weather. I need the ability to easily override it and tell it to just run a certain amount of time. This doesn't let you do that without going ahead and running a full cycle right then and there. What I mean is that it wants you to put in the watering schedule for peak season and it'll automatically adjust. Well, when it is Spring and I suddenly get 5 days of 80 degree weather, but this thing thinks that it should only be running at 10% of normal since it is April, it is really annoying that I can't just flip it from auto adjust to JUST RUN THE TIMES I SAID WITHOUT ADJUSTING. It simply needs an additional dial setting of MANUAL.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by chuckleman works great easy to set and verify settings
I like that all the settings for each station can be reviewed at once. the disadvantage is that one cannot have different run time for the same station on different days of the week.

This was a replacement for the original (14+ years) sprinkler timer that I could now longer read the LQ display. Easy to install, instructions were very clear. Even the water saver sensor was a snap to install.
