Product Overview

The Rain Wizard Urn is a thing of beauty and clever design. Constructed with thick and durable polyethylene resin which holds up to the harshest elements, the exterior has the appearance of a terra cotta urn. The graceful lines, curves, and garnishes on the exterior make it an accent piece on your homes exterior and not something that just sticks to your house. The flat back design optimizes space used and allows you to position the barrel close to walls or flat areas. The top is the only of its kind that acts as a planter space and also self-drains when excess water is present. There is also a channel built into the rim which diverts overflowing water to the front and away from the barrel and home foundation. You can have peace of mind that you're helping the environment by conserving water and giving your garden the best water it can get, devoid of harsh chemicals and rich in nutrients. And you can perform that conservation without sacrificing your home's outer appearance with the very stylish and functional Rain Wizard Urn.

Customer Questions & Answers

Can this be painted to match exterior trim of house?

Have not got one yet but I want to.
Asked by: koilover
You may want to try, but I would not paint inside the planter area. We ordered two of the Sandstone colored barrels, and the color looks nothing like the photograph online. What we got is closer to a speckled grey.

Is this material safe to hold water for human consumption?

If I am going to use this for water on my plants or to drink, I want to be assured it is safe. If it is, how can I know that is true? Thanks in advance for your help. (Also, will you please let me know if the person answering is a customer, someone representing Rain Wizard or Home Depot?) Much appreciated!
Asked by: Detoxbabe
Hi Detoxbabe, This urn is designed for rain water and not potable (drinking) water, I would not recommend use this as a drinking water source. Mike

Can this be used with a rain chain?

If so, how?

Overflow details

So when these fill up, the overflow comes cascading out of the front? It seems like this might be hard to then direct towards a drain if need be. I am comparing this to other barrels where they divert via hose from the gutter, and then once full, the diverter valve stop directing water into the barrel and it just starts running down the downspout again. I can't have a giant puddle where these will be located so I am not sure if this model would work well for my house.

Customer Reviews

65 Gal. Sandstone Urn Rain Barrel is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 22.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Mine is now in storage First off the faucet dripped even after reinstalling several times. The filter doesn't work worth a hoot and I have a LOT of trash in the bottom of the barrel with no way to clean it out. Mosquitos lay eggs in the stagnating water inside. I put a homemade screen on it and it still lets the grit off the roof shingles fill the bottom layer and clogging the facet. Faucet was really cheap, low quality to start with. If I ever try to set it up again, the first thing I will do is get a quality faucet.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great value that works well and looks smart Our 65 gallon rain barrel was very easy to install on a current downspout. It seems sturdy enough for our use. I love the top that fits a planter - Makes the Urn look more attactive in a garden setting.. The faucet included works well with our attached hose. After the first rain we wished the barrel was larger. We will need to figure out a diverter process to help catch the runoff once the barrel fills - which is very fast in a good rain. The plants Love this rain water and have never looked better!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Decent product, with modifications Nice looking, durable product. Major drawback is the water collection mechanism/lack of overflow diversion. There are basically two types of rain barrel collection unit: Those that use a diverter system and those that collect water directly from the downspout through an opening on top. This is the latter and the problem with this type is that there is no mechanism for diverting the overflow once the barrel is full (which happens amazingly quickly). With a diverter, the overflow is 'diverted' through the existing downspout. With the 'direct' system, there is no where for the water to go but to spill out the rain barrel where it sits. This may or may not be acceptable for you; something to consider. I will be buying a separate diverter kit to install with this unit (which involves drilling a hole in it) so that I can essentially convert this to a diverter-type system. Otherwise, the product seems durable and nice looking - I have this one sitting at the front of my house which is visible to all and a less attractive (but more functional) Earthminder system sitting in back!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent style and design I am not sure what theknobs on the back are for and there are no instructions for them being there. This barrel could have better overflow system but it was easy to make my own.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good but not great I got the sandstone color and when there is water in it, I can see the water line looking at the outside of the urn. That means that light is easily getting through and that means there will be algae problems. I would not recommend the sandstone color on that basis. The shape of the urn looks fine from the front, but the squarish appendage on the back of the urn is downright ugly. Possibly if I paint that portion to match the siding of the house, it may not be such an eyesore. The brass faucet is good but it screws into a what seems like a nylon fitting. Included with the urn is a roll of the white plumbers tape to wrap the threads. Normally you make three wraps. I did at least 3 and maybe 4 or 5. The faucet is screwed in as tightly as possible, but it still weeps at that threaded connection. The planter depression on top is nice and deep (4-5") and has two drain holes that drain to the outside rear, keeping dirty water out of the urn. Best feature of this urn!
