It can get under some icy patches and lift them off the surface, then be scraped away. However, it was listed as a chipper/scraper when I ordered it, and chipping is not its strong suit. It will chip thinner areas of ice, but does not work well if the patches are thicker. I don't think it would stand up to the rigors of heavy chipping, so have given it only 4 stars.

Unfortunately, the wooden handle is made of poorer quality wood. I bought mine this winter and have used it three times. The wood is sinking into where the metal head connects to the handle and wood is beginning to crack and chip off as I use it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from my first ice chipper This is my first ice chipper/scraper. Not too much different than using metal transfer shovel (which is what I had been using prior to getting this). Especially with the 7 inch width, it really feels like a shovel, just without the raised sides... I think that the narrower widths might be a little too narrow. No complaints, but just not really seeing any clear difference over using a metal shovel. This one seems quite beefy and sturdy, so yes I would recommend it.
