Product Overview

Reach Barrier DD24100 Reflective Air Insulation features two layers of sealed air which are laminated between two layers of durable reflective polyethylene. This gives reflective air the ability to retain its air longer and provides excellent insulation and sound reduction. Reflective air meets ASTM standards and complies with building code. The insulation roll is easy to install because there is no mess or fumes and will not cause itchy skin. Reach Barrier reflective air insulation is ideal for: Attic spaces, exterior and interior walls, interior masonry walls, radiant floors, metal and steel buildings, knee walls, crawl spaces, garage ceilings and many other applications where insulation is needed. This insulation roll is 100 ft. long, 24 in. high and 5/16 in. nominal. Reach Barrier reflective insulation products are one of the most versatile and energy efficient insulation products available. Radiant (Reflective) barriers are installed in attics, walls, roof decking and flooring. Most newly constructed homes contain radiant barrier insulation because of the proven effectiveness to decrease energy usage and cost by reducing summer heat gain and winter heat loss. Installing a radiant barrier may be the lowest-cost improvement that can produce the greatest overall reduction in energy usage and expense.

Will this eliminate condensation if installed on the underside of a metal roof in an open air pole barn?
Asked by: Andy
Dear Andy: No. To stop condensation, you need to stop air from reaching the cold metal roof. Depending on the size of your pole barn, here are two options: (1) Large pole barn: The quickest and easiest solution is to cover the bottom of the metal roof with an inch or so of spray foam, which will isolate the cold metal. 50 degrees is typically the lowest temp for spray foam, however, so this may not be an option until the spring. If you can wait, find a local spray foam supplier and schedule your job. Winter is their 'down' season in much of the country, and you may be able to negotiate a good price. You won't need more than an inch, because you are obviously not trying to insulate your open pole barn -- just enough to isolate the cold metal roof. Foam is flammable, however, so you would also need to spray it with a generous layer of intumescent paint after it cures. See: FireGuard Model # FFGD E84-g05, Home Depot Internet #203582028 (2) Smaller pole barn - or if you can't wait till spring: You need to create an air barrier. Depending on how your pole barn roof is framed, you could fasten an air barrier under the roof. All of the edges and seams would need to be sealed to block air leaks / infiltration. For the barrier, you could use thick poly sheet, sheets of foil-faced 1" foam board (covered with FireGuard) or any other 100% vapor barrier. With poly sheet and similar vapor barriers, the goal is to create a sealed air pocket under the roof -- not glue the barrier to the bottom of the roof. With foam board, you can fasten or glue it to the bottom of the metal roof. With both, all of the seams and edges need to be carefully sealed to block air leaks. DAP 230 sealant is a good option. Could I use this product on a garage door?

The problem we want to solve is a very hot garage in summer. I wondered if I could install a layer of this radiant barrier against the steel and then install the Corning fiberglass garage door insulation kit over that (on the interior side). Do I need to be concerned about an air space between the radiant barrier and the steel surface?
Asked by: Merrietta
Hello: Radiant barriers are not effective if you do not create a sealed air gap -- which is nearly impossible on a garage door. If the radiant barrier is simply pressed against the steel surface, there is no room for the shiny surface to reflect infrared radiation. If the air space is not sealed, then infrared heat is reflected back to the garage door surface, which heats the air even more -- which escapes into your garage just like it did before. In short, you would block the radiant energy but create a more effective heater for the air. So do not waste money on a radiant barrier. Install the fiberglass kit, then spend the rest on additional steps to insulate your garage, e.g. weatherstripping around the garage door, improved insulation and a tree to shade this part of your house. I hope this is helpful, Mark

If using this would i need to also install additional insulation before putting drywall up?

Asked by: Tinyhouse
Dear TinyHouse: First, reflective / radiant barrier products are not effective in winter because cold cannot be 'reflected' and the warmer air in your home is not radiant. Second, you must create a sealed air pocket on one side; this air gap provides almost all of the claimed R value in summer. The shiny bubble wrap has almost no R value. So... standard insulation would be much more effective, winter and summer. Foam board provides R5 per inch; you can fill the stud bays with 2" plus 1" thick pieces of foam board. Do not try to cut the pieces for a tight fit; seal all of the edges and joints to block air leaks with the 'Windows and Doors' version of Great Stuff foam. We recently completed a deep remodel project in Massachusetts and used this technique. A few photos are attached. We prefer XPS foam because it does not absorb water. If you live in a cold or hot climate, it is also a good idea to wrap the exterior of your house in foam board. This breaks the 'thermal bridges' from the framing and isolates the house from the exterior temperatures. We wrapped this house with 2" XPS, for example. A photo is attached. Foam is flammable, however, and must be covered by 1/2" drywall in any home, basement, garage, storage area, etc. There is an alternative that is fire resistant, with R4 per inch: Roxul rock wool. They make a 'batt' product that you can use to fill stud, joist and rafter bays -- plus a 'board' product that installs just like foam board. would this help the heat in the house by putting it under metal roof on a deck?

Asked by: Lexy
Dear Lexy: No. Reflective / radiant barrier products are not effective in winter because cold cannot be 'reflected' and the warmer air inside your home is not radiant. Standard insulation would be more effective, e.g. foam board or rock wool / rock board. We prefer XPS foam board which provides R5 per inch, and does not absorb water. Foam board is flammable, however, and must be covered by 1/2" drywall in any living space, basement, garage, storage area etc. So we also use Roxul ComfortBatt and ComfortBoard, which is fire resistant. Home Depot carries all of these products, and you can install them yourself. I hope this is helpful. Mark

2 ft. x 100 ft. Double Reflective Insulation Roll with Double Air is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product So easy to install. Haven't quite finished yet, putting in our large shed. I really think will keep in the ac and heat. We took a large shed added three windows, siding to match the house, window ac and portable heater. Turning it into a man cave with storage. Insulation and fast track shelves are all that's left.
