Hi Dottie, this product does not use electricity at all. This product uses gel fuel cans.
Take a look at the instruction/assembly guide. This will show you how this product goes together and where the gel fuel cans are placed. Below is the link to the guide.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.4 out of 5 by 27 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by looks great, sounds great! These work great and look awesome! Crackling sound and just enough of a flame with the cans of gel fuel. Not for heat of course, but just for atmosphere with NO mess! You don't even have to open the flue which is an energy saver in itself. I bought 3 of them, two for indoor fireplaces and one for an outdoor fireplace. (NOT a firepit, a real fireplace) Someone mentioned the smaller logs looked 'suspended' but if they do, you just have to bend the arms they are attached to and they lay nicely on the large front log. Easily done by hand and only need a tiny adjustment. Go for it! I don't think you will regret it! July 17, 2012
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Pretty decent set Firstly, real flames customer service is excellent. 2 logs showed up cracked and they sent me an entire new set. The set shows nicely. My only complaint is that you can see the cans more than ihad hoped. Others have suggested that it looks nice March 15, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent value, great looking product! This was the perfect solution to our previously, unusable fireplace. What a great idea for people who need expensive fireplace repairs or don't want to spend the money right now on converting to gas. It was very easy to assemble. The only thing was the phillips screws were a bit odd shaped. I found my old Roberston screwdriver (from Canada, square shaped end) worked better. It's very sturdy once together. It's looks good overall, though not 100% like real logs, but good enough for us. I'm happy we went with the oak instead of birch because we'd be looking at a bunch of soot on the white logs otherwise. I would love to see a way to reuse canisters instead of using cans all the time due to cost and environmental impact. However, burning even one can looks great in the fireplace. I am very happy with this product. October 18, 2011
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Looks great, sounds great, better than expected! I was very pleased with this product. Perfect size and the logs don't look cheesy or too fake. The real flames from the gel look great. It gives off just a little bit of heat. The best feature is the crackling sound, like a real log fire. It was easy to assemble and arrived quickly. In my opinion this is a great option for someone (like us) without a working fireplace, who does not have gas available, and wants something that works even when the electricity is out. (no smell). The only downfall is that the refills are a little bit expensive. Overall highly recommend this product! January 2, 2012
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Very pleased with product overall I have a double sided fireplace that is inoperable. Decided to abandon traditional wood fire usage and go with something for ambiance only. Purchased two log sets and placed back to back in fireplace. Lit them both and wow what a great looking fire! Easy to assemble but found the log sets paint colors did not match exactly and the pilot holes for screws were not always drilled correctly. Was able to assemble with a few issues but pleased with end results. Have fired up twice since I received just after Christmas. I would and have recommended this product to friends already. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Find Fuel I guess gel fuel fireplace logs are on the way out because no one wants to carry the fuel. The cans are a heavy item to ship. So I didn't even check for an on line source. After looking all over town once I received the log set, I got the same line, "we don't carry those anymore". Even Home Depot has discontinued stocking the gel fuel both at stores and on line. NO big box store carries it . Why sell a product and then not even sell what you need in order to use it? So if you think you can run to the store and get a few cans, whenever you want, forget it. You'll have to wait for your order to ship in from who knows where. The fuel is available only on line. The log set looks good. You will need to finesse the small logs so that they appear to lay on top of the large logs. Bend and twist the metal arms they are screwed to until you get the logs to lay right. Just wish I could tell first hand how the logs look all lit up with some nice flames. Expecting shipment of fuel in 14 days. Sigh... December 9, 2014
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Great potential, but quality needs improvement.. The video on the Real Flame website looked impressive, so we ordered one. Once constructed, the height of the front log appeared too short, as we could easily see the top of the gel fuel cans, and the top logs did not touch the front log, leaving the top logs suspended in mid-air, not very realistic looking. I tried propping up the front log with some wood of my own, but it didn't work very well. Finally, I called Real Flame for help, thinking they might sell me some additional small top logs so that I could arrange them differently for a more realistic-looking fire. They said they could not do that, but rather asked me to take a picture of the product and send it to them. I instead returned the product to Home Depot for a no-hassle refund. January 3, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by What a great solution! We have a wood-burning fireplace, but just don't like the real wood mess. We considered switching to gas and still may do so, but until we can budget for the upgrade, we bought this item and we love it! It burns like a real fire and the only cleanup is to toss away a gel can. The gel that goes with it has a great flame and even crackles like a real fire! After using this we may not switch to gas...
