Product Overview

The Real Wood Products Whiskey Barrel is the perfect planter for any deck, patio or garden setting. Constructed of 100% natural kiln-dried cedar, the planter staves are tongue and grooved to ensure stability of the planter for years to come. Reinforced with galvanized steel, each hoop is secured with 6 screws to keep them from "slipping", as can sometimes happen with genuine whiskey barrels. Constructed to be the same size as genuine whiskey barrels, our Real Wood Products Barrel fits all aquatic whiskey liners while weighing in at only 1/3 of the weight (22 lbs.) of it's oak counterpart. Additionally, the barrel has been pre-drilled to assist with drainage and oxygenation of your most treasured plants. This large capacity planter also boasts a rustic burnt finish, to help ensure the plant retains that "old-fashioned" look for years to come.

  • Pre-drilled for drainage
  • Cedar is kiln dried to prevent "drying out"
  • Staves are tongue and grooved for stability
  • Cedar is burnt to a dark finish to resemble genuine whiskey barrels

Using a large container for plants that have shorter root systems - examples: annuals; herbs; house plants; seasonal arrangements; etc. do not need a full container of soil. I put a bunch of the pony packs and other sm. plastic pots in the bottom third or even half of the container first. Then I smash them down a bit, cover with landscape cloth and then add the potting soil. You will use less soil, the container will not be as heavy and the base provides plenty of drainage. Just be sure to use the landscape CLOTH (not plastic) to keep the soil from running out of the bottom. However, if you are planning to plant a tomato or root veggies you will need to fill the whole container. Read Less

I would suggest having most of it not a full 2 cubic foot sized bag and a 1 cubic foot bag (or just to make it easy get 2 of the bigger bags). It takes quite a bit to fill these and if you don't use all of the soil you have it ready for next year.
It may also depend on how many plants you want to put in but I suggest having 2 of the 2 cubic foot sized bags on hand. Good luck!!.

Some rough math puts the dimensions of this planter at approx. 8760 cubic inches, which is a little over 5 cubic feet. Granted that was assuming the planter is a standard cylinder, and this one is not uniform in shape considering the top is wider than the bottom.
In short, 5 cubic feet is the answer you are looking for. Never hurts to buy an extra bag of soil though...its no fun realizing you need just a

Answer:
The diameter is a straight line across the top opening of the barrel which is 26" across. The "Depth" is the measurement from the top opening to the floor of the barrel. which is 16.5". Hope this helps.

Answer:
It is easy to figure out
lay a straight stick or tight line across the top.
Stand measuring stick/tape on end, the distance from the stick/'string to the \bottom is
considered the depth in this instance. Should be 12-18" approx.
Now ya know

Answer:
The depth is measured from front to back of something. The term depth is usually used with rectangular items. In this case they should have called it the diameter.

Most companies, when you order online they ship it to you regardless if it's available at your store or not. I'll try Lowe's.

Answer:
Home Depot ships most online purchases to your store if you request. Look for the free to store for pickup. If you are in a remote location with a smaller store, pick a larger store and they may carry the item.
If the store does not carry the item, they may not accept ship to store. Most stores have same rule because if you do not pick item up then they need to add to their inventory for sale.

Rated 4.7 out of 5 by 20 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect for my 'SALSA' garden I've always wanted to try an edible garden. I was advised to start small and grow what you like to eat. I saw this herb garden example (w/ tomato plant in center) in a Home Depot Store and figured it was my 'speed'. I just love the barrel's look and the quality is good. Also purchased a wheeled platform w/ drip pan to move it and protect deck. My husband likes it so much he suggested we get another!!! whoo hoo! The plants are growing soooo well - I think I'll take him up on the offer and thin the plants out. Really like it! June 26, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Whiskey Barrel Planter I found this barrel at a local Home Depot in our area. Holds up nicely & looks great with the flowers we selected. A tip would be to add rocks at bottom before using potting soil & mulch. April 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excelent Product I purchased two of these planters to use as drink holders for parties, the metal tubs fit perfectly inside and makes for a great look. In the future I may actually use them for what they were intended but for now I will enjoy them during parties. May 15, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Looks good I currently have a lime and a lemon tree in the one I purchased. I had to dig through the inventory to find planters that were to banged up. They look good though. March 22, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect for the Deck!! I ordered these online to be picked up at the store. It was easy and when I arrived at the store and saw the two I had ordered, I bought two more while I was there! They were a little bigger than I expected, but that was good, because they were perfect for on the deck and along side of the steps up to the deck (I stacked one on top of an inverted barrel). I love these barrels; they are so much nicer than the smaller wooden planter pots I had last year! July 15, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Whiskey Barrel Planter I looked for wine barrel planters all over and they were scarce and old looking. I bought one made of resin but returned it because it didn't look real. This one has the real look and great dark finish. I bought two of them. (They have a whole in the bottom for drainage). Real wine barrels are a thing of the past because the demand out strips the supply this is a great alternative. June 11, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Beautiful and durable I really love the look of the dark wood. I bought one of these to plant my raspberry plant in. Before adding any soil to it I coated it with 2 coats of the cedar garden bed oil inside and out, hoping that will help protect it from fading as it will be sitting outside year round. I'm considering purchasing 2 more to replace old barrels that were left from the previous homeowner that are falling apart and are quite faded. The price of these are very good, even better when you get coupons from the Home Depot Garden Club! August 14, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect Planter I was looking for Whiskey Barrel planter and the photo on the web sight looked like just what I wanted. After reading some of the reviews I was not sure what I was going to see when I got to the store. I found the barrel to be like the photo showed. Plus it did have a center drain hole which some reviews said it did not. I was surprised to find that the stay were tongue and grooved and the stays were held tightly together with non rusted steel barrel rings. Also the barrel was $10 less than Lowes for the same quality March 18, 2015
