Answer:
A thin but strong cord runs through holes on two sides through the pleats and comes out at the bottom in the center. A mechanism on the inside of the plastic bar on the bottom locks the cords when you slide the shade up and it releases it when you grab the shade with two hands and slide it down. Very easy.

Hi ggildy -Thank you for your question. Yes, the White Fabric Corded Light Blocking Pleated Shade can be cut to a smaller size width, however the length of the shade cannot be changed. This shade can be cut as small as 18 inches wide. Thank you for your interest in this product.

Rated 4.1 out of 5 by 35 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good Product These shades are easy to install and can last for years if handled carefully. The description is misleading however. The shades are made of paper the word fabric relates to the pull cord. They darken the room but do not block daylight. Light also shines through on the sides or between shades if you use them side by side. But they are a very good value for the price. You can customize the size by cutting off both sides but you need a good sharp utility knife to do so. The instructions are included and very good. They attach to your window frame with double adhesive foam tape. If you decide to remove the shades one day, it is very difficult to remove the tape but it can be done (Google helps) August 2, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Junk When I hung these blinds they were way too short! Definitely not 72 inches long. I bought 2 blinds. One blind literally fell apart an hour after I hung it. The bottom part just dropped off! The second blind lasted about 24 hours. I am getting a refund. They are junk January 26, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Quick fix The temporary shades are a great product long term or short term. August 2, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by High quality product I purchased these blinds last year and love the way they look and can be cleaned off. They are high in quality and I like them so much that I bought more this year for my other bedroom. They block light and the pull strings work well also June 8, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Not the best value for price The price of this temporary shade does not reflect the quality. The lift operation does not; always move evenly or completely while the lowering operation requires a significant pull pressure which caused one of the blinds I purchased to partially come off the adhesive attached placement. You must operated with slow extreme care and as other mentioned use both hands. Hopefully it will last a while. The room darkening feature does work appropriately. May 10, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Does the job...for a while Bought this product in the summer of 2014. Installation of the product was very easy. It did the job of blocking the afternoon sun. Unfortunately, I have to buy a new one now because the plastic panel at the bottom, which you grab to raise or lower the shade, disintegrated a few weeks ago. The shade can be raised if I'm careful by pulling on the now exposed cord mechanism, but the tension is lost and the shade won't stay put any longer without using clips. April 28, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great temporary shades! So easy to cut to size and install! Had 3 windows done in 20 minutes! These are perfect for temporary or even semi-permanent shades. I can't comment on how long the adhesive will stick because I've only had them up for a couple of weeks but they look great and I would highly recommend! November 11, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by I like! Pros: These shades was a breeze to measure, trim and install in my windows. I have two very wide windows over 72" wide. I wish these shades came in more larger size as far as width goes. had to buy two shades for every widow. I measure my window and trim the shades to perfection. I thought I had two different color shades at first one white and one brown as shown on home depo website but after I installed them I was able to look on the other side of my window and that's when I realized that I installed one shade on the opposite side. I liked the white color for my living room and brown for the bedroom. I was able to untapped the shades and re-stick it back to the window without it falling down. Still holding the next day and I'm able to pull the shade up and down without it unsticking to the surface. Cons: The only thing I don't like about these shades are the little holes that hold the string to pull the shades up and down. Also because I had to purchase two shades for each window the sun seeps through the little holes and in the middle where the two shades where there's a ting gap even though they are touching. I wanted them to be as close as possible to prevent sun light from coming through. I purchased these shades to keep the sun out of my room when I'm sleeping. We get a tremendous amount of sun that heats up the room in the summer time. Other than that the price is right and they give a nice style to any window. I would buy again. Hopefully by then they will come in wider widths February 12, 2014
