How would I use this to insulate my exterior walls with other insulation? Inside wall or outside wall?

Dear Justin and other Home Depot customers: The new reply from someone in the Reflectix Technical Group is curious. He / she stated: "Respectfully, the responder from Mass. is in error. Reflectix assembly R-values are valid year around. Our products are tested in the same manner as fiberglass and foam, in a ASTM C1363 Hot Box." First, Reflectix is NOT tested in the same manner as fiberglass and foam insulation. You can see this on the Home Depot website. Fiberglass and foam board are tested as materials, with an R value per inch of thickness -- e.g. R-13 for 3.5" of Owens Corning fiberglass, and R-5 per inch with Foamular foam board. Reflectix is always tested as part of an assembly, e.g. a simulated wall with 2x4 studs, dry wall, an air space and layer of Reflectix. Why? Because the shiny bubble wrap that Reflectix is made from has very little R value -- only R-1. The sealed air gap that you must build / create provides almost all of the claimed R values, not the bubble wrap by itself. Second, the performance of Reflectix and other radiant barriers varies with the temperature -- better in summer and poor in winter. In a cathedral ceiling, for example, Reflectix claims R7 in summer but only R1 in winter in the northern USA. Why? Because cold cannot be 'reflected' and warmer air inside your home does not create much infrared (radiant) energy. Reflectix should provide ASTM test reports that show R-value performance in summer AND winter temperatures for each assembly, and post these reports on their website. What is recommended to insulate a metal building for commercial use?

His statement is confusing two applications, radiant barriers and reflective insulations. Radiant barriers are installed in open attics (typically ventilated) and do not require enclosed air spaces. This type of application reduces radiant heat transfer and is not quantified with an R-value. Reflective insulation assemblies are installed in cavities that have enclosed air spaces and provide stated R-value benefits. Reflective insulation is tested in the same manner as fiberglass and foam products, and in wall and floor systems, provides a year around R-value benefit." First, commercial metal buildings typically do not have an enclosed and ventilated attic, like a house. So Ice would need to install Reflectix under the metal roof, with a sealed air gap. Second, Reflectix is NOT tested in the same manner as fiberglass and foam insulation. You can see this on the Home Depot website. Fiberglass, foam board and other standard insulation products are tested as materials, with an R value per inch of thickness -- e.g. R-13 for 3.5" of Owens Corning fiberglass, and R-5 per inch with Foamular foam board. Can it be taped when wrapping duct? What would be the best tape? Duct tape?

Thank you for your question. Duct insulation is a very prevalent application for our product. Either Reflectix Foil Tape or an HVAC Foil Duct tape with an acrylic adhesive will work for your purpose. Please refer to the product webpage - then to the "Info and Guides" box a little lower to the right on the page - click on "Installation Guide" - the Duct Application is listed and will provide you the additional instructions that you require.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is my second review since I completed the project. On a blazing hot sunny day it was very ho... This is my second review since I completed the project. On a blazing hot sunny day it was very hot inside the aluminum skinned shed. You can feel the heat radiating down from the roof. As you moved under the roof to where the product was installed it was like walking under a shade tree. As one complained about the tbs, it takes a little learning curve on how to get the staple table to work. On the first side that you folded over to staple, place the staple close to the edge of the product and staple several feet on one side only. This gives you a little slack to grab the other side to get the staple tab started. The tab is about one inch on each side. This 12x24 foot shed took six rolls of 16"x100' of product including the ceiling. In the photo the shop lights are the Commercial Electric 4 ft. White LED Linkable Shop Light purchased at Home Depot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product, used it in the past, very easy to install It took just a short time to figure out the "staple tab", expecting it to be similar to the one found on fiberglass insulation. The manufacturer simply pops the bubbles along the edge which allows for easy bending and stapling. The video I watched on line gave a great tip on the install procedure and it really helped speed up the process since I was on my back in a crawl space. It did the job for insulating my radiant floor install and my new kitchen floor is very comfortable. The photo shows some of the install with the first layer half way up the space and in the background you can see the layer at the bottom also, that the manufacturer claims to give me an R21. Love this stuff!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Relatively easy to install The staple tab is a joke. I thought that it would be an extra flap or something. The staple tab consists of the regular material that has a series of punch holes on the 1/2 inch edge of each side to deflate the material to allow it to be easily stapled. I do not see that it makes any difference in the installation, one way or the other. It is easy to install and I assume that it will pay for itself in utility bill savings and increased comfort of my home. Use an air or electric stapler and be liberal with the staples. The primary reason I chose Reflectix insulation is that I am highly allergic to any other type of insulation available, both during and after installation. This works well and after installing it, I am confident that it will be well worth the cost ($ and my labor).

I using this in an non-insulated prefab storage shed. In South Florida intense heat, humidity and sun on the aluminum siding acts like an oven on the inside. Reflecting the heat was more efficient than trying to insulate it with 3.5 inches of fiberglass. The fiberglass would act like a sponge and not allow the walls to breathe. The project is not complete but it does go in very easy. This is nearly identical to the solar reflective panels you can buy for your vehicle windshield. There is a similar product in the attic space of my home stapled to the roof rafters and it really keeps the temperature down so I know this product will work. My only complaint is HD should carry this product in its stores.

We're using Reflectix to seal and augment the insulation of our cabin on the river - the walls as well as the floor and cathedral ceiling. It's so easy to install that it's hard to stay ahead of our help. The immediate comfort is remarkable and we haven't even added the fiberglass yet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from made my own tabs very easy to use insulation. i was using it with radiant heat, insulating the bays in a crawl space. i used gorilla tape to make tabs on the sides about 3 feet apart. this allowed me to easily position the insulation and i also stapled through the tape tab. before i made the tabs the insulation could be hard to position because it was such a tight fit that you couldn't grasp the edge to position it. with about a 4 inch piece of tape, attach to both sides of insulation leaving about an inch extending beyond edge, that's the tab.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product! This worked perfectly for my purposes. I insulated the joists in my basement below radiant floor heating. I am DIYer. It was easy to manage. The staples tabs are there--you just have to fold them down a bit before you try to staple up the sheets.
