Reflectix,

In answering the question about stapling your product directly to a ceiling you said you recommend a 3/4 inch air gap minimum. However, the instructions from your web sire say 1/4 inch air gap minimum. Please resolve this discrepancy. I have read at other web sites that 3/4 inch minimum gap should be used so 3/4 inch seems like the correct answer? Thanks.

For clarification. The application/question relates to the Double Reflective/Double Bubble product. The application of interest is for a radiant barrier in an attic. This product is not perforated (like the RB4812550) and as a result should maintain an air space between the product and the deck. The 0.25" is a "minimum", 0.75" is AOK and does not affect the performance of a radiant barrier. Radiant Read More

Dear Jim: Good thing you read up on the need for an air gap, which must also be sealed. This air pocket provides almost all of the claimed R value. The shiny bubble wrap has almost no R value by itself. That is why a 3/4" gap (or more) is essential. Another key factor not clarified on 'reflective' manufacturer web sites: reflective insulation is not effective in winter because cold cannot be 'reflected' and warm air is not radiant.

If you are trying to insulate your attic, the exposed rafters are also a key factor. Wood is a surprisingly good thermal conductor.

So, the best option is to completely cover the rafters, e.g. with foam board or rock wool board. Foam board provides the most effective insulation wtih R5 per inch, but is very flammable and must be covered by 1/2" drywall if your attic is accessible and used for storage. Here is the best option: TUFF-R Model # 268441, Home Depot Internet # 100322376 Store SKU # 163832. If your attic is accessible and you do not want to install drywall, use Roxul ComfortBoard which provides R4 per inch: Roxul Model # RXCB11224, Home Depot Internet # 206789748 Store SKU # 1001748089. Depending on your climate, you may need to install multiple layers to achieve the recommended total R value.

Also be sure to carefully seal all of the edges and joints, to block air leaks. The'Windows and Doors' version of Great Stuff works well for larger gaps; the cured foam remains flexible to block cracks as things expand and contract. DAP 230 sealant works well for small gaps.

I have also learned that the effectiveness of this product is reduced as the air gap gets smaller. So, 3/4 inch being correct, your DIY customers are spending their money and doing the work but not getting the full benefit of your product because of the errors on your web site.
Over a period of several years your customers will be paying more for their AC then they should.
Are you going to acknowledge that your web site has errors and fix them or not? Read Less

The 1/4 inch air gap listed on our website is only for use of the radiant barrier product on trusses.
Any of the bubble product have to have a minimum of 3/4 inch air space.

If the enclosed air space did not have the high reflectance/low emittance surface, the tested R-value would be significantly lower. Reflective insulation assemblies are installed in cavities that have enclosed air spaces and provide stated R-value benefits. Then I checked the "Fine Homebuilding" website. Yikes! This is a case of caveat emptor; the claims made for these 'reflective' products do not match the actual performance. For example, do a Google search for these articles: "Is Bubble Wrap Duct Insulation a Good Idea?", and "The Foil-Faced Bubble Wrap Sham - Understanding Radiant Barriers".
Fundamentally, radiant 'bubble wrap' products provide virtually no insulation value, e.g. R 1. The manufacturer claims are based on an "assembly" which includes the air gap behind the bubble wrap, e.g. the space between the rafters or joists, if you staple the bubble wrap to the beams. There are three key problems:
> The 'radiant barrier' only works in the summer with hot roofs. There is almost no R value in the winter.
> If the 'assembly' is not perfectly horizontal, air circulates behind the bubble wrap -- transferring heat / cold. If your roof has an angle like most, this reduces the value even in the summer.
> Dust accumulates on the shiny surface, which quickly reduces the minimal R value.
In short, 'reflective' insulation is not cost effective. Home Depot offers a number of other products you can use that provide solid performance, winter and summer, e.g. XPS and Polyiso foam board, with solid R5 to R6 per inch, and cellulose (with the blower machine) that your can use to insulate the ceiling in your attic.
I attached some photos of the XPS foam board we installed inside the walls of our 1950-era home, and on the outside.
Always check professional home building sites for the details on installation, e.g. Fine Homebuilding, and read the manufacturer installation instructions carefully. Also check with your local Building Inspector. For example, an effective "air barrier" is essential, house wrap is important on the exterior, the edges of foam board must be sealed, e.g. with Great Stuff, and all foam products must be protected by an ignition barrier (in living spaces) because they are flammable.
These details are very important for effective insulation!

Foam board is the most effective with R5 per inch. You can cut pieces to fill the space between your rafters and studs. Be sure to carefully seal all of the edges and joints to block air leaks. The 'Windows and Doors' version of Great Stuff foam works well; the cured foam remains flexible to avoid cracks as things expand and contract. We recently completed a deep home remodel project along the shore in Massachusetts and used this technique. A photo is attached.

Foam board is also flammable, however, and MUST be covered by an approved 'thermal barrier'. The standard is 1/2" drywall. So if you plan to finish the interior of your shed, this is a good option.

If the appearance of the interior walls is not a concern, Roxul ComfortBatt and ComfortBoard are the best options - with R4 per inch. Roxul is much denser than fiberglass and inhibits air flow, and is not flammable.

If you live in a climate with extreme temperatures, it would be a good idea to finish your insulation with a layer over the top of the rafters and studs. This breaks the 'thermal bridge' created by the wood framing, which is a surprisingly good conductor of heat / cold.

Reflectix should be installed on both the walls and the ceiling with a minimum of 3/4 inch air space between the Reflectix and the walls of the shed and the roof of the shed. Reflectix installed with this air space would give you an R-value of 5.3 in the walls and a 4.4 in the ceiling. The product would also reflect 96% of the radiant heat away from the shed.

I enclosed a patio, insulating the walls around the windows but did not insulate the ceiling. I like the looks of the rafters.

Also, can this product be painted? My wood ceiling is dark brown.

If all of the above is a no, do you have a product for the exterior roof?

Wood is a surprisingly good conductor of heat / cold. Reflective insulation products are also ineffective in winter because cold cannot be 'reflected' and warm air inside your house is not radiant.

To preserve the look of your interior ceiling, add insulation to the exterior roof surface -- under the shingles or roofing material. This is also much more effective than trying to add insulation inside. XPS foam board is the best option with R5 per inch. XPS also does not absorb water, obviously a key factor for exterior applications. Start with 2" thick XPS for R10; add more depending on your climate. See: Owens Corning Model # 52DD, Home Depot Internet # 202085962 Store SKU # 307101. Seal all of the joints and edges to block air and water leaks. DAP 230 works well. The building is basically 2x4 and 2x6 framing covered with thin aluminum siding and roofing panels. In the afternoons when the sun shines on the building, it heats up like an oven and the window A/C unit just could not cool it. I purchased 2 rolls of the reflective insulation with staple tabs and installed between the studs and against the metal siding. The insulation has worked even better than I expected in reducing the radiant heat produced by the sun on the siding. My A/C unit can now cool the building nicely! April 24, 2014

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by So much easier than other insulation! I was leery about this insulation but it is incredibly easy to install and very efficient at insulating my shed. When the product arrived it didn't appear to be the "staple tab" version. However, after contacting the manufacturer I discovered that the difference between the two versions is very minimal. The staple tab version edges are perforated to pierce the bubbles in the material. This flattening of the edges allows not only easier installation but it seems to allow for a tighter fit to the studs. Take my word for it, use this over other forms of insulation! July 23, 2013

It made no difference in inside temperature. When I checked the part of the roof that did not have the product installed on it the temperature was around 120F. Then I checked a part that was covered and the temp was around 95F.
