Questions & Answers

what is the big difference between the white and the metalic reflective

Asked by: Dude
Dear Dude and Home Depot customers: I am puzzled by the reply from a Reflectix Technical Group rep in Indiana. He / she stated: "Respectfully, the responder from Mass. is in error." It would be helpful if the Reflectix Technical Group could point out this "error". For example: (1) Fact: Reflectix was required by the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to publish a list of actual R values for various applications and assemblies, which is available on the Reflectix website. This is driven by the FTC's "R Value Rule." It is important to look closely at the claims for each application. In a standard 2x4 wall, for example, Reflectix says, "R 3.9 (total assembly with R-13 batt = R-14)" In other words, if you add Reflectix on top of standard R13 fiberglass insulation, you only gain 1 R -- not 3.9 R. (2) Fact: The R values that Reflectix claims for cathedral ceilings vary widely between summer and winter, e.g. R7 in summer and R1 in winter in the northern US. Curiously, Reflectix does not provide R value results for other applications in summer and winter, e.g. for walls or crawlspaces. Why? Cold in the winter cannot be 'reflected' like radiant (infrared) heat from a roof in the summer. Independent tests show that radiant barrier performance drops along with the temperature -- as shown in the Reflectix R values for a cathedral ceiling. It would be helpful if Reflectix would publish ASTM test reports for each application, in winter and summer, on their website. (3) Fact: The shiny plastic bubble wrap that Reflectix is made of provides very little R value by itself; test results show R1 or less. Almost all of the claimed R values depend on a air gap that you must create / build when you install it -- as shown in Reflectix installation guides. (4) Fact: There is one application where Reflectix and similar radiant / reflective barrier products are effective: in a standard ventilated attic, under a hot roof in the summer. Independent tests show that you can simply lay a reflective barrier down on top of your attic joists, over your existing insulation -- or staple it to the bottom of your rafters. This will reduce heat flux through the attic to the rooms below by ~24%, reducing HVAC costs by 2% to 4%. In all other applications, winter and summer, the standard insulation products sold by Home Depot are more effective, e.g. foam board, rock wool, fiberglass and cellulose. Another key point that is often overlooked: dust accumulation. Three independent tests have shown that dust accumulating on the shiny surface steadily degrades performance. I look forward to a reply from Reflectix technical support with more details. Mark

Is this recommended for greenhouses?

Company answer please
Asked by: Larawaybob
Respectfully, the responder from Mass. is in error. Reflectix wall and floor assembly R-values are valid year around (we state specific thermal performance “per application”). Our products are tested in the same manner as fiberglass and foam. Please refer to the product webpage – scroll down to “Product Overview”, then to the "Info and Guides" and click on "Installation Guide" - the applications are listed alphabetically, click on the installation of interest and you will be provided with the instructions that you require. Thank you for your interest in Reflectix products.

Garage Door

Would this product provide a radiant barrier if applied to the inside of my garage door? What would the best way to install it be between sections of the door?
Asked by: DIYer
Per a previous answer, the double reflective insulation is recommended. And yes, it will provide a very effective radiant barrier.

I want to insulate my new pole barn building. Is it better to use the single or double reflectix barrier? What ids the R value difference?

Customer Reviews

24 in. x 100 ft. White Single Reflective Insulation is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product! I am amazed at how well this stuff insulates!! I used it in a garage and it has made a HUGE difference in temp. and allows the A/C to keep up even when it's 90* outside. Before insulation, it would get hot enough in the space to literally melt plastic! But now even with NO A/C running it hasn't gotten above 80*. It was very easy to install with a staple gun and a pair of scissors and the 2' width fit perfectly between the roof rafters. Easy to cut around the light fixtures and garage door rails. And it looks great! Really brightens up the space. Will be adding white duct tape to cover the seams. I already did that on 2 of the seams and it works really well, just haven't had a chance to get back up there and finish it. I plan to get more when the S.E. Indiana Barn Hunt Club moves to their new building to insulate that place.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Product is working satisfactory under the extreme conditions. After figuring dimensions of the garage door, it was easy to layout and cut the material to size for the install which took some thought on what type of 2 sided tape to use since being in the phoenix area the sun in the west beats directly on the door and it gets HOT. Most tapes I reviewed didn't list temperature ratings. So I went with a 1.5" wide carpet tape that was rated to 200 degrees. And I used about 9 50yd rolls which was probably overkill but I don't want it falling off in a week. I did a 17' x 7' door and had some material left. What surprised me when I looked at the instructions for this material was that it didn't show it being used for my app. It was showed as a utility type wall and ceiling app. But it works. And it dropped the temp. in the garage down about 5 to 10 degrees which is a lot in Arizona. When gauging the product's efficiency you have to take into consideration that putting a hot car in the garage is going to release heat as it cools so maybe a small vent fan is another project to deal with hot climates.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly what I was looking for. I used this insulation to wrap the under pinning of my motor home for cold weather. Taped the top and used landscape fabric pins on the bottom, thus no need for a backing frame. Worked like a charm.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for pole barns Insulating a pole barn and this gives me the extra R value rather than using house wrap

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast delivery - good product I ordered this product online with free shipping and it was delivered a couple days early from the estimated delivery date. Used it in my 40x80 pole barn on the wall that sits in direct sunlight. Works good, easy to cut & install.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lightweight, easy to install, not "messy". I've used this product before. Fine insulation for DIY folks. Seems to work quite well, though I have no scientific proof.
