Dear Mart: Yes -- but a couple of caveats: First, Reflectix provides almost no insulation value by itself. The R values claimed on the package are based on a sealed 'air gap' that you must create or build when you install it. Second, Reflectix melts above 180 degrees, so it cannot be applied on the top or near the exhaust vent of your water heater.

A more effective option would be HVAC duct wrap, which is also sold by Home Depot. Look for Master Flow foil faced fiberglass duct wrap, Model # INSWRP60 Internet # 100152008 Store SKU # 363984. This product provide R6 insulation value and is 24" wide, for easy installation. The foil facing is heat resistant, and will make it easy to clean. You could add multiple layers to boost the R value. Be sure to use foil HVAC tape to install it -- not common silver "duck" tape. Look for Nashua Tape Model # 1207792 Internet # 100030120 Store SKU # 915245.

Answer:
We do not recommend using the reflective one side/white one side material for wrapping metal duct. All of our testing for using Reflectix to wrap ductwork is for the double bubble product that is reflective on both sides.

Home Depot sells fiberglass duct insulation that is easier to install and more effective -- particularly if you need to insulate a duct in a hot attic. You can simply wrap the duct with multiple layers to boost the R value. See: Model # INSWRP60, Home Depot Internet # 100152008 Store SKU # 363984 and Model # INSLV6, Home Depot Internet # 100396953 Store SKU # 363913.

Use foil HVAC tape to install duct wrap -- not silver fabric "duck" tape. See: Nashua Tape Model # 1207792, Home Depot Internet # 100030120 Store SKU # 915245.

Before you add insulation, make sure you carefully seal all air leaks. Mastic is the most effective solution; just apply a generous layer to every joint with your hand or a putty knife. See: Model # WBA50, Home Depot Internet # 100396973 Store SKU # 559722

I hope this is helpful.

For best results you would want to leave a 3/4 inch air space between the Reflectix and the roof.

Dear ARizonaHeat:
First, a few install notes and caveats:
(1) Reflective 'insulation' provides almost no value in winter because 'cold' cannot be reflected, and the warmth in heated air is not radiant -- like a hot metal roof in summer. Reflectix claims R7 with a cathedral ceiling in summer, for example, but only R1 in winter.

(2) Reflective insulation is only effective in summer if you build / create a sealed air pocket, e.g. between it and your metal walls. The edges must be air sealed, to block leaks and circulation.
(3) Performance degrades over time as dust accumulates on the shiny surface.
With all of this in mind, Home Depot sells other insulation products that will provide solid R value, winter and summer. For your metal utility building, Roxul rock wool board with foil facing would probably be best. This would provide the benefit of a reflective surface in summer, plus consistent R value in winter. Rock wool board is also non-flammable, unlike foam board which is very flammable -- often a key factor in a utility building. You can order it from your Home Depot's Customer Service or Pro Desk. Ask for Roxul Rockboard 60 with foil facing.
You could also add a layer of Roxul rock wool batts on the walls, with Rockboard or drywall on the inner surface. See: Home Depot model # RXCB351525 Internet # 202090820 Store SKU # 974419
Be sure to seal all of the Rockboard edges and joints to prevent air leaks. The 'Windows and Doors' version of Great Stuff works well; it remains flexible after it cures, to avoid cracks as things expand and contract. Answer:
Yes. Reflectix does work with steel roofs. For best performance apply the Reflectix with a minimum 3/4" air space between the product and the steel roof.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Effective and easy to work with My basement has a stone foundation that is drafty and constantly sheds sand from the old mortar. It's not worth finishing properly but I wanted to make it useable for a workshop without investing too much time or money. The reflective insulation works perfectly for this, it was cheap and easy to hang up. The basement is noticeably warmer and less damp feeling now and the white outer surface dramatically brightened it up. I have no complaints about this stuff, it's light and easy to work but is tough enough to not accidentally rip. January 29, 2013
