Answer:
the best way to obtain a correct ( plug ) is to do it at the time of a generator purchase. TRY it, before you buy it. should you HAVE a generator without a manual, look at the design of the connection at the generator output panel. MAKE a sketch, look close, record details, go to local HD store, ask for help, buy one. DO NOT discard your receipt .ELECTRICAL devices can NOT be returned if they are USED.

The power cable attached requires a minimum 10 AWG stranded wire (male plug on one end and typically a female receptacle on the other end). If connecting to an electrical panel in a stand-by application, you would normally use a weather proof box that has a male plug which connects to your power cables female end. The cable through the structure is (again) a minimum 10 AWG (rated for 30 amps) running to the breaker panel.
Hope this is helpful. See photo for my stand-by generator setup.

Answer:
The best and most common way to connect a portable generator to a household electrical system is through the generator's four conductor locking receptacle. The exact configuration can vary, but most generators use an L14-30 style plug that matches the inlet on the 30 amp Power Inlet Box.

NO
This box is "wet weather resistant" with the cover closed or not in use.
A "while in use" style box has a different design and is more conducive to wet weather use.

YES. however use common sense. SAFETY is your primary goal. the first thing to do is locate it where it can do the best job for you. should a situation come up where water , snow can reach it from the ground, you have a problem. do it correct the first time.

Hi Mike,
It really will be up to the Twist Lock plug you use that will determine how water tight it would be. The inlet box itself is rain proof, but make sure the 'gate' for the plug is closed when not in use.

I have a NEMA 3-Wire L530C twist lock female plug-in attached to a 10 gauge power chord for temporary house power to my RV. This outdoor box would work if it were 3--wire (actually a box that the outlet came out the bottom would be better and more water proof). Are there 3-wire instead of 4-wire twist-lock outlets in outdoor boxes w/outlet cover available?

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Solid Product The inlet box is well made and comes with well written and easy to understand instructions. August 2, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by DOES NOT ACCEPT ALUMINUM WIRE After I ran my wire all the way across my basement into the garage, I prepared to install this plug and discovered that it only accepts copper wire. For a 30A 220V circuit, aluminum wire is far more common than copper (just check Home Depot's wire selection), and honestly it never even occurred to me that the plug might not be aluminum-rated. This little bit of info should definitely be made more clear in the product description! This plug is useless to me, unless I want to pull out $100 worth of aluminum wire and replace it with even more expensive copper. April 15, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by use it for exterior eletric service to my home Still in the box, had a wire person come and check it out and he said it was as good as you could get. will install it next week. April 19, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by A good inlet for a power generator The power inlet was easy to assemble. I used # 10 wire to connect up to a double pull 30 amp breaker. It's better to use thinner wire such as #12 to make it easier to make all the connections. This box can adequately hold a connecting 30 amp 10/4 power cord in place. A better method would be to use a twist lock adapter to ensure the power cord stays well connected to inlet box. August 19, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great Product Bought this to complete my home generator setup. Mounted easily to outside wall to run cable to breaker panel in basement. Quality construction. A little pricey but it's hard to fine a NEMA male twist-lock plug and box for DIY'rs. Best value was Home Depot. Worth the price to do the job the right way. Purchased online from Home Depot, fast delivery. Very satisfied with product and service. November 17, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by commercial grade This inlet box is exactly what I needed for my generator. Good quality and easy t install. December 19, 2011
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Generator Power Inlet Box for a Mobile Home It was a bit daunting for a basic DIY guy like me, but I got everything I needed to connect my emergency power generator to my load center (aka fuse box), and this Power Inlet Box from Reliance Controls is the centerpiece. It is super solid and high quality, and pretty much immune to rain when closed. I recommend using it with a matching twist-lock L14-30 connector also from Reliance Controls for maximum electrical contact. ( Model # L1430C Internet # 202216503 ) I used 6 gauge wire (I like to over-spec) which was a struggle to rout neatly in the box but the connections are rock-solid. Remember if you are going to connect a generator to your load center you also need a Generator Interlock to be safe and legal. This makes sure you cannot switch on both the generator and the grid feed at the same time. September 16, 2015
