Customer Questions & Answers

What type of connection / plug is used at the generator to feed a 230 volt load?

Asked by: Anonymous
the best way to obtain a correct ( plug ) is to do it at the time of a generator purchase. TRY it, before you buy it. should you HAVE a generator without a manual, look at the design of the connection at the generator output panel. MAKE a sketch, look close, record details, go to local HD store, ask for help, buy one. DO NOT discard your receipt .ELECTRICAL devices can NOT be returned if they are USED.

Will this work on a 3500 watt generator

Asked by: Lonepine35
This inlet box can handle 3600 watts on each leg (# 10 wire required ) for EACH device connector. You MUST have each connection used to give proper AND legal use. Let us explain. THIS box needs a cable with FOUR wires in it. The plug cap and connector must fit your generator and the inlet box. Are you OFF GRID ? If NOT, DO NOT connect this generator directly into your LOAD CENTER. Review ALL this information with a person that is QUALIFIED to assist you. Go to your local Home Depot, and take the booklet for your generator with you. Having installed many of such items, I suggest a LARGER rated generator. to keep you running for the LONG haul. Your engine will not labor under demand of a starting load, and the unit will last longer. Take a few minutes and total all the things you NEED to keep running . That will be your wattage demand.

what size wire would I use to hookup a 30 amp power Inlet box

Asked by: whiz
Use number 10 wire. HOWEVER should you exceed 100 feet to the termination point, go to the next size larger wire. REMEMBER, you MUST use all terminals ( that means four conductors ). NOW the tricky question. Where will this WIRE be run. UNDERGROUND, ( UG ), IN CONDUIT, PVC or EMT, with a aerial for above ground ( point A to point B ) OR the must common , inside a structure ( MN ). ???? IF this is for backup power do it right the first time. PS DO NOT forget the TRANSFER switches for a smooth and safe trans fer of energy. Check local code if you need to DIG a trench. CALL BEFORE YOU DIG.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This box is a great inlet for your generator After going through three hurricanes, I decided that I did want a generator to provide power for the refrigerator and the television. We found that you really need the TV to keep track of where gasoline is and when power is likely to be restored and what is in your neighborhood in the way of storms. Without an inlet box like this, you wind up with extension cords either through a window or through a door. In either case, you now have mosquitos. With this box on the outside, and a 2 gang duplex outlet on the inside, I was able to take the 240 volt 2 phase power into the inside of the house where it became 2 120v duplex outlets. My generator only puts out 2 120 volt circuits that are each limited ot 15 volts by circuit breaker if you use the L14-30R outlet that this box enables you to get to the house. I used a heavy duty 10 awg extension cord, also from home depot, from the generator to this box so that there is very little voltage drop getting to the inside extensions to the refrigerator, TV and satellite receiver, Computer, printer, cable modem, fans and lights. This box is a critical item for the storm preparations.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Generator Power Inlet Box for a Mobile Home It was a bit daunting for a basic DIY guy like me, but I got everything I needed to connect my emergency power generator to my load center (aka fuse box), and this Power Inlet Box from Reliance Controls is the centerpiece. It is super solid and high quality, and pretty much immune to rain when closed. I recommend using it with a matching twist-lock L14-30 connector also from Reliance Controls for maximum electrical contact. ( Model # L1430C Internet # 202216503 ) I used 6 gauge wire (I like to over-spec) which was a struggle to rout neatly in the box but the connections are rock-solid. Remember if you are going to connect a generator to your load center you also need a Generator Interlock to be safe and legal. This makes sure you cannot switch on both the generator and the grid feed at the same time.

Can be wired through the back of the unit, making for a very clean install. Much nicer than running a cord inside from out at your portable generator.
