Customer Questions & Answers

Is an adapter available to allow a power strip with a 3-prong plug to be connected to this cord?

Want to connect household items such as a refrigerator, lamps, space heater, and iPad to the generator via this extension cord. Want to use a standard electronic device-type power strip with 6-8 outlets and a 3-prong plug. Is there an adapter from Reliance or Home Depot to allow me to do this? And do you see any problems with this type of set up?

Can I connect two of these together to make the length of 80' & then connect to my power generator?

Asked by: Anonymous
The voltage drop for a 10awg power cord connected to a generator supplying 240 volts, single phase voltage (average generator with this type of outlet supplying 240 volts, 30 Amps) on average is .3% or 3/4 of a volt every 10 feet of power cord. So for 80 feet of this size power cable, the voltage drop would be approximately 6 volts at the far end. Some generators output slightly more than 240 volts out of the factory to make up for the anticipated average voltage drop, or the output voltage might be manually adjustable to compensate for your specific needs (contact your generator manufacturer's tech support to find out if adjusting the output voltage of your specific model is possible, and how to do it if possible). Another option would be to make your own power cable with 8awg 4 wire power cable (or have an electrician do it for you if you're not the handy type). The larger gauge cable will reduce the amount of voltage drop vs the same length 10awg cable, but will be more expensive per foot of cable. All things being equal, the 8awg power cable would only have about 1/2 of a volt of voltage drop per 10 feet, so only about 4 volts at 80 feet. There are several variables involved when working with electricity, but the best advice is to keep your power cords as short as possible to limit voltage drop, which can prevent motors from overheating, as well as other low voltage problems. If in doubt about anything, consult your generator manufacturer or a licensed electrician just to be safe.

40 Extension cable

Will I be able to bury the cable as long as I have it running through a PVC Schedule 40 Conduit pipe?
Asked by: rbtech2
This cord is not intended for underground installation. The conduit might make it acceptable, please check your local building codes.

Can I replace the male end of this cord with a 30 Amp female (3 prong) receptacle to allow me to plug in my RV?

Asked by: JoeCamper
You should purchase a cable specifically made to connect your generator to your RV receptacle.

This cable is used to connect a portable generator to your house power inlet that's normally connected to a transfer switch near your home's power loadcenter. The cable is well made and appears to be very durable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good construction at a fair price. I was going to try to save money by making my own power cord, but the parts turned out to be more expensive than this well built cord.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Very rugged construction but,.... Cord is very rugged construction but the female end does not easily plug into and lock to anything but itself. I cannot make the the male plug that came with my generator plug into the female end of this cord and lock in with the twist action. If it doesn't twist and lock the pair falls apart with the slightest bump. After much wiggling, it finally plugged into my new Reliance inlet box and locked. I have looked at similar 30 A cords in other stores and they all appear to be made by the same company so, I don't expect that a different cord from the same place would be any better. I am not very happy with this cord but it will do what I want. Picture upload on review website doesn't work.
