Answer:
i don't know about any volume change, but the one i just purchased for the garage cannot be heard while standing at the insulated door to the garage. it's fine for a room you're in often enough to notice the outage.

Answer:
I'm not sure if it's been re-designed, but I purchased one last week, and it's loud enough that I can hear it from the garage if I'm in that half of the house. It's volume is louder than a wristwatch alarm, but not quite as loud as a bedside alarm clock. I'm pretty sure it would wake me up if it was in the same room that I was asleep in, and I'm a moderate (not heavy or light) sleeper.

PowerOut Power Failure Alert with Light - DISCONTINUED is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 30.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Save the contents of your freezer! After buying a freezer for the garage, I recently found out that the GFCI outlet in the garage trips nearly every thunderstorm power flicker. This power failure alarm was the perfect, low-cost solution. The alarms that were the next step up in features cost 4-5 times as much! The alarm isn't the loudest, but it gets the job done. In my 1600+ sq ft house, I can hear it going off in the garage from the entire half of the house next to the garage. It's enough to notify me that the power is out in the garage the next morning, but it wouldn't wake me up from across the house. I'm pretty sure it would wake me up if it was in the same room though. The light feature is pretty great as well. There's also an option for just the light to activate when the power goes out, in order to let you find a regular flashlight without fumbling around in the dark. The one feature that would have made this thing 5 stars is an outlet pass-through. It should have been fairly easy to incorporate, but for some reason it wasn't included in the design.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Power out indicated ! I was asked to design a warning system for power failure for cooling chillers in our lab. This simple inexpensive solution was applauded by my boss and the low cost was definately a plus. I ordered two and they have been tested to work as promised, and they are both in service. We intend to order several more. ! This device would probably be used more if people knew that it was available for applications like deep freezes where they are usually placed out of sight in garages and basements. My wife and daughter want them at the house as they could use them as easy to find flashlights when the power goes out Thanks !

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Product I bought 2 of these alarms. One for me, and one for my parents. We both have basement flooding issues if the power goes out during heavy rains, and the sump pump stops running. We need to startup generators fairly quickly. My father tries to stay awake all night long, to monitor power during storms... and I usually just sleep and hope for the best. Until I woke up to 6 inches of water in the basement. With these alarms, we can now sleep soundly, knowing we will be awaken, if the power goes off. It's loud enough to wake you if you keep it in your bedroom, and it is easy to find with the automatic built-in light. Highly recommended.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Describes product adequately. Have a freezer in our garage on a GFI circuit that has tripped and spoiled freezer contents. Use this item to warn if GFI circuit goes out. No incidents yet, but appears to work adequately. It has both the visual and audio signals that I desire.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just what we wanted We have a number of these throughout our home. A great assist when the power goes out at night along with giving security during the night when acting as a nightlight. Very pleased.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not worth the money it works as stated but the alarm fuction is not loud enough it should be as loud as a smoke decter but you can bearly hear it in the same room and will not wake you up if needed

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Steal one generator, shame on me; steal a 2nd generator, NOT NOW! Somebody helped themselves to a portable generator while it was running during the night. Now, I'm counting on this little puppy to warn me if my generator is disconnected, and then the thief can deal with my 9mm. A must-have with a portable generator.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Power Alarm We use the power alarm to wake us up if we lose power during a heavy rain storm so that we can start our generator to keep our sump pump running. For the price we paid, it's a lot cheaper than sleeping through a power outage and waking up to a flooded basement. The alarm isn't as loud as I thought it would be, but I have it plugged in next to my bed and it's at least as loud as our alarm clock. When plugged in there is a green LED that shines a very dim light into the room, which makes for a good-enough nightlight.
