I have 29" of clearance above my gas hot water heater. I believe it will need the full 52". How flexible is this dip tube? I would prefer not to disconnect all of the gas equipment and tilt the tank. Is there a more flexible dip tube available if this one is not an option?

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect fit Hot Water Dip tube It is a simple plastic tube with gasket to take the cold water to the bottom of the tank and its is working as designed. Easy to install but most of the old dip tube is on the bottom of the tank with no way to get it out. Shouldn't be a problem. July 8, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by NOT CARRIED IN LOCAL STORE?!? Not sure what the point of selling this online but not in the store is. This is one of those parts that you have to shut off the water AND cut pipes to remove and diagnose. What are you supposed to do, go a week without hot water while you wait for it to ship? FWIW, the other local big box home improvement chain doesn't carry this item either... absurd! January 12, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Just what I needed A broken or deteriorated dip tube can make your water heater inefficient. This item should be stocked in every store since it will fit several different brands, gas or electric. easy to install if you are comfortable working on plumbing. April 27, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect fit! After noticing I wasn't finishing a quick shower with hot water unless I was reducing the cold water, I read online this was a quick, easy fix to try before replacing a hot water heater. Mine is an AO Smith installed in May 1996 (smart plumber who put a sticker on it). **Be careful opening the package - this is a plastic tube. Do not use a razor blade type cutter or knife. I worked at it with a scissors (lengthwise) being careful not to cut the tube. Whoever packaged up mine was a little cruel. Fully wrapped, rolled and folded over in heavy brown paper then added clear tape around the entire thing. Once I got the top opened up, I couldn't pull out the tube because they had taped it very well at the other end to the inside of the paper. I was lucky to have a shut off valve and a union just above the pipe nipple where this tube is installed. Quick work to disassemble. It was a little tough getting the old one out - which was a whopping 3 1/2" long. Needle nose pliers around the edges and just worked it up and out. With my "short" water heater, I trimmed off about 6"or 7" of this one, slid the rod in with the gasket at the top where the tube is flared - perfect fit. This tube is flexible enough to bend since my basement ceiling is about 7' high. One note of caution - the Rheem sticker on the tube needs to be removed before install - it is just thick enough to scrape off onto the internal pipe threads when installing the tube. Reassembled all the piping and started the water heater back up. Entire job took about an hour and included hunting up a couple of pipe wrenches and teflon tape. Now the cold water fills at the bottom of the tank and the hot is sucked out at the top! Great item - should be available in stores - especially with this tough economy. I'd like to see HD stock them, do a video and workshop for installing them. People can't always afford to replace the water heater and shouldn't have to when it is a cheap, simple fix like this.
