This is a fantastic idea for people who travel and want to conserve energy costs. If it only was reliable it would get more stars. My wifi module is only about 20 feet from my router in the basement....clear line of site. However, it seems the coney wifi module keeps losing its connection. None of my other wifi products lose connection. So as I am typing this review on vacation....my iPad screen says connection error....please unplug the module and plug it back in. I've been doing this a lot for the past three weeks. This has been the case since I got this hooked up three weeks ago. Not sure if it is a defective module or programming. Until I see more reliability I can not recommend this product.
Also, pretty much the only thing you can do is schedule the device to go on and off vacation mode for specific dates and times. It would be nice if you could control it like a programmable thermostat....making it hotter in the mornings as each family member takes their shower so we don't run out of hot water and be able to lower the temp for the rest of the day.
All in all...nice start. Just get it to work and have more programmable options and it will be worth the $50.

This module would be great if it would stay connect to the wifi, I have to reboot my wifi for it to connect every day. Tech support passed me to level two and I still waiting for a solution. I had it for about 2 month now and still does not work correctly.

First we had to deal with the Rheem water heater issues. Our unit was overly sensitive to our newish wall paint and the sensor would turn off the heater. After restarting it many times it just stopped restarting all together. Rheem never returned a call or an e-mail. I found the solution on-line. We replaced the sensor with a resistor and now at least we have hot water.
The wifi module after the last "update" disconnects from the wifi, which is 2 feet away EVERY DAY! This is a weekend house. I reboot the wifi on the water heater, and then I can turn it on! We will put a remote control wifi electric switch on the Rheem wifi unit so we can then reboot it by turning it off and on remotely! Fantastic plan. A wifi electric switch to reboot the wifi unit on the water heater. How HD can sell these units and do nothing about pressuring Rheem to get their act together. I wish I had looked at the reviews before purchasing. Who would think that today a wifi connection could be SO difficult to maintain. Returning a water heater is not something easy to do. Once you get it in, you have to deal with it.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Lance Product works as intended
Product works fine. After spending significant amount for water heater, found out after the fact this part was another $50 and consumer will have to setup themselves. Instructions were simple, similar to most appliance aftermarket WiFi units. First plug in/power then attach your phone to the broadcast WiFi of the module, then setup SSID to home WiFi.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by DavidO Works great behind a single router....
Some folks have trouble keeping these devices "on-line". The key is to avoid placing them behind more than one router with Network Address Translation (NAT) turned on either or both routers. So, if you have a cable modem (i.e. router) and a wireless router (i.e. router) you either need to turn your wireless router to "bridge" mode or have these connect to the cable modem via wireless if so supported.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by DaveD Unreliable - Desperately needs updated software to remove bugs
The WiFi setup process for this device is needlessly frustrating. It took a dozen attempts to get this module successfully configured -- my many attempts failed at random places in the setup process and would not allow successful completion. Finally, after repeating the process over and over, all the stars aligned and the process completed. I wasn't making mistakes, it just finally made it all the way through successfully.
After the device was finally set up, it seemed to work fine with the app for a while, anyway. The next morning, the app just says "(!) Connection Error. Can't Connect to Equipment". So I reboot the WiFi module and the app immediately has a connection again. The next morning, more of the same.
My WiFi module is about 10-15 feet from my WiFi router, but it can't seem to go 24 hours without losing the connection. When it does lose connection, it never seems to be able to re-establish the connection without having to reboot it by cycling power.
Obviously, this is a problem, as I do not intend to reboot my WiFi module each and every morning. Why doesn't it try to re-establish the connection without a reboot? Why can't it reboot itself if it fails after x number of tries?
This product needs a software update, and it needs it badly. With the software as-is, I cannot recommend this product to anyone. Are you listening, Rheem? Please make this product reliable!
