Customer Questions & Answers

Will a tankless system operate properly even in a power outage?

If the power grid went down for an extended period of time or permanently, would this system still be able to operate and do its job?
Asked by: Handy

can this vent thru the side of the house

Asked by: Bryan
Yes it can , and the vent they had in stock at Home depot was not the most attractive so after doing research found a Rheem RTG20234 for a 2x6 inch framed wall or a Rheem RTG20231 for a 2x4 inch framed wall .These are for the Mid Efficiency water heaters and look nice. Home Depot did not have any available so I found it on Amazon for $102.99 and free shipping.

Customer Reviews

8.4 GPM Natural Gas Mid Efficiency Indoor Tankless Gas Water Heater is rated 3.0 out of 5 by 28.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worked well for almost a year The Rheem 8.4GPM tankless hot water heater has a design flaw. Internal to the unit is an observation window used for determining if the burner is working properly. This window has a piece of glass which can fall out, allowing heat from the burner to damage internal components, rendering the unit inoperable. Unfortunately, Rheem will not cover the cost of this failure as they will most likely look for ways to classify the failure as "incorrect installation". In my experience, they did not like the vent termination assembly used, and disqualified any warranty regarding damage induced by the piece of glass falling out, which is wholly unrelated.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do not buy this unit! Rheem does not support their products As other reviewers mentioned, Rheem customer support and warranty is terrible. This unit worked fine for me for about 2 years. Then it developed a big leak in the heat exchange. I called Rheem for support and they would not warranty the unit claiming incorrect vent installation despite the fact I followed their instructions exactly. They even tried to tell me I used parts that weren't in the kit. I had kept the instruction and showed them the parts were included, but they continued to say it was all my fault. Don't buy from Rheem. I sure wish I hadn't!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't Buy, if you plan to install yourself Bought in Feb 11 in a pinch and installed myself. Had issues with fault at 125 degrees. Requested support from Rheem and could not get any. (none of Rheem warranty shops would retun my calls.) Home Depot also could not recommend support. Settled on setting of 120, which meant only one shower, or wash at a time. Two years later, April 13, total unit has crashed. Water leaking inside. Contacted Rheem, they asked for E-mail of pictures of wet inside and vent system. Result is; tech claims vent install is wrong. Was supposed to be 12" from ground. Wrong install means no warranty. This ends up as $400/yr spend to heat water. Just beware! Install yourself, and your stuck with the results. Carefully verify the exaust requirements. I would even recommend you take a pic of exaust, contact support and tell them you want them to verify it is correct.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst purchase ever and my wife is on me daily to get it fixed! Arggghhh After 3 years I am on the phone once again. We have replaced two of these units and now I am on my third. Rheem's warranty says they are responsible for parts, we're on the hook for labor. Error Code 13 is the bane of my existence. In the morning the unit shuts off in the middle of a shower if it is even remotely humid outside. I have been avoiding having the wrestle with Rheem on the phone but now I have no choice. Not happy, do not buy this product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very good Heater, Home depot does not sell vent kit. This was very easy to install once you find the proper install parts that Home Depot does not sell! Why you ask ? That was my thoughts exactly! I called Rheem for the part #s and their prices. Then looked them up on Amazon. I saved about $180.00 with Amazon ( I have Amazon prime) once you get everything you need install was a snap.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from WORKED FOR 4 DAYS - RHEEM HAS TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!! I bought this unit to replace my 6 year old Rheem tank less unit that died due to scale build up. I bought it because it could use the same hook ups and exhaust. It took 2 days to arrive with the expedited shipping that cost something like $80 but I needed hot water. Installed this and it worked for 4 days. I called Rheem on the Sunday it died and was told I needed a level 3 tech but they only work Mon-Fri. I provided a bunch of info, was assigned a case number and told to call back on Monday. I called back on Monday only to shuffled around to 6 different people, having to tell them each the same information over and over and over and over and over and over before finally reaching the mythical level 3 tech who also yet again asked for the same story, was rude and refused to offer solutions. The tech tried to get me to fix/diagnose the broken unit and I told her that it was their problem - it should work. I finally had to twist their arm to set up a service call from a local shop to troubleshoot /verify the warranty claim. The local provider -Patriot was great and ordered a replacement board but I will never buy a Rheem product again based on this interaction. also Home Depot offered to take the unit back and order a new one if Rheem refused to make it right -that was a good option but I didn't want to have to uninstall and wait 3 days plus pay for the expedited shipping again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from PLEASE READ !!!! Water heater great -Venting an issue! PLEASE READ! We bought online, it is a quality product. The water heater itself is a great product, but the venting is a nightmare to get. I hope this help someone, Home Depot does not carry nor will it help find the ventilation needed to vent thru the roof. You must call the 800 customer service order that comes w/ your unit. You will need to order directly from Rheems the items you need to vent, the cost is approximately $500.00 in addition to unit and other items. My husband is a master electrician, you need experience in plumbing and electrical to self install. I must say, now that it is all over, I couldn't /wouldn't do w/o a tankless anymore! Good luck!
