Customer Questions & Answers

Is this a plastic tank or not?

I asked a couple other questions about maintenance, and got good answers. But the answers that come back keep mentioning that this tank is not plastic. The premise of the other questions was that it was a plastic tank and should never rust, but will it ever fail. The maintenance part is answer (should be flushed). But the answers have been saying that it's actually a stainless steel tank, and shouldn't rust because it's stainless steel (not because it's plastic). The description of this tank says "Plastic tank wont rust; ideal in hard water applications Lightweight jacket and tank make it easier to install" Is it or is it not? Here is some more information to make sure that we're all talking about the same thing: This is a Marathon Model # MR50245. The current price on 12 November is over $1,000 on website: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Marathon-50-Gal-Tall-4500-Watt-Lifetime-Electric-Water-Heater-MR50245/205466186 Thanks! Dan

What is the hourly recovery rate to 100 F?
Asked by: Ilovehotwater
The recovery is calculated for a 90 degree rise which rates up to 21 gallon-per-hour. A 100 degree rise would not be much different and should not effect that rate by more than 1-2 gallons.

Is the tank lined
Asked by: Debby
Marathon units are not lined, because there is no need to protect the unit from direct contact with the water. It takes a long time for plastic to be corroded by water.

Marathon 50 Gal. Lifetime Warranty Electric Water Heater with Durable Design is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 21.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Mine failed. I have been very proud of this heater since I purchased it in '98 or '99. Now in 2016 it has failed with water pouring out of it.. Tried contacting Marathon and got no response. I paid twice the price of a conventional water heater but got less than twice the life of it. I understand that an item can fail but by not even being able to get in to contact the company to get the warranty process started is not acceptable. Also 2 weeks to wait for replacement would not be acceptable. (No longer stocked locally) It looks like I will be forced to buy an off the shelf water heater to get hot water for my family till the warranty issue is resolved.

In June 2016, the unit began gushing water. It was replaced under warrantee, but installation exceeded the cost of the water heater. In mid November 2016 the new unit began leaking, first around the base of the relief valve, then from behind the lower door. Plumber says the unit will have to be replaced AGAIN, only 5 months after it was installed. While I'm sure Rheem will again replace it, I'm not sure I want to install another Marathon.

I immediately ordered another. This model is light-weight, easy to install and will not rust. That's an important feature considering how close we live to the coast. Although it looks 'spacey' in the garage, I feel it will last a lifetime. Barring any other natural disaster, this is the last water heater I will need to buy. Thank you Rheem for making a superior product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Buyer be ware! I've had my water heater for 6 years, without any problems. I recently noticed that the exterior plastic shell was cracking. Called rheem with concern and was told that it would not stand up in our Texas heat. They upgraded the exterior case with new plastic that would take the Texas heat. Rheem gave me no hassle about a full replacement and authorized a warranty claim number. I called the store and they want me to pay the difference in price to to inflation. Rheem can't control Home depot exchange policy. The best part from management is that I have to return my old water heater first(it still works fine) and wait a expected 24 days for new heater. Rheem has been excellent in customer service but home depot has once again lived up to poor expectations. I recommend the heater but purchase from another source other than home depot.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from "Lifetime warranty" is limited to parts only Product started to leak from upper control panel after approximately 1 year. Rheem would only pay for the gasket but expects us to pay for the cost to replace it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really happy with purchase The tank comes with a 10 year warranty but if you will just register it you get a lifetime warranty. I had registered mine and 13 years later was able to replace it with a new one under warranty and I have registered my new one.
