Softened Water

Hi, I have very hard water, >100 GPG hard in West Texas. My softener removes the hardness, yet will the elements in this unit not last due to no anode in the softened water? Thanks
Asked by: Stratosurfer
Yes, this unit is not designed with an anode rod. The primary purpose of the anode is to protect a steel tank from corrosion and then developing a leak. Since the interior of a Marathon is plastic an anode rod is not needed.

Marathon 50 Gal. Short 4500-Watt Lifetime Electric Water Heater is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 202.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointed Bought the tank in November of 2015 for a new home. We moved into the house in May 2016. It was fine for about one week, then the elements broke! Called Rheem and they sent us new elements (standard elements do not fit), but only after the plumber called, too. Took cold showers until the parts came 4 days later. Less than a week later the thermostat broke. Cold showers again!! Didn't bother calling. We were frustrated and sick of taking cold showers so we just had our plumber install a standard hot water tank. Very disappointed especially considering how EXPENSIVE it was to buy.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from plastic tank a problem When these first came out I installed several of them, in my house, an apartment, and at least two customer's homes. I have lost track of one of the customers, but the other three have gone bad. The company gets a good rating, as all have been replaced by them, except for the one in the apartment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Plenty of HOT Water! I bought the water heater to replace one that had started leaking, I was able to take a HOT shower less than an hour after I installed it and our family of 4 has not run out oh hot water yet. The outside of the water heater stays at room temperature thanks to the superior insulation. I bought mine through our Electric CO OP (Ozarks Electric Cooperative) and saved about $250.00 vs buying from a home center or other outlet They only sell the highest efficiency electric appliances (water heaters and heat pumps) to their members and they are sold at cost since by law an Electric Cooperative can't make a profit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from About a dozen excellent features I don't see other This make has a good dozen or more features that others do NOT have to the best of my knowledge. Any non-ferrous water heater is top dog ;--- end of story. It's thermostats are easily accessible and adjustable as are the wiring hook-up,tubing connectors, and exchangeability of the elements. Tank outer shell is only a few degrees warmer than ambient so that says the R-factor of the 2 inches or so of insulation is effective. Optically, it has pleasing aesthetics. Although somewhat pricey you know the old adage --- you get what you pay for ! Too bad the distributor does not have the other variants of this make on hand (as I was led to believe) but as is often the case I needed it yesterday since it was urgent to have domestic hot water perhaps especially so during cold periods (-15oc) ! Cheers ~~~ Clifford .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hotter water than I've had in ages! I purhcased my Marathon water heater just days ago, it replaced an 11+ year old water heater. The water is hot, fast and reliable so far. A small glitch with the installation, it was rectified by days end and everything was completed as promised. My only negative comment, the Rheem Marathon water heaters aren't easy to find in Nova Scotia, I had to do a lot of research to find the only company that knew about it and would/could install my Rheem Marathon!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best upgrade to house yet I got this a month ago so as not have to use the furnace to heat hot water for showers and the like. Best upgrade for the house I ever done. No more of the furnace cutting in to heat water in mid summer. Did my research and the extra costs for this hot water over one that you purchase at the local hardware is well worth it. A durable plastic tank and extra insulation will have this water heater outlasting the cheaper models by years. Well worth the coin.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One Year Later We had this unit installed to replace a ten year-old tank, and so far we're very happy with our choice and can't complain about it. It's heats the incoming municipal cold water to a toasty 125 degrees, and we're able to squeeze in one dishwashing session by hand and three showers by family members before the hot water supply is gone. We were worried about possible cracks in the plastic shell over time, since it is a hard plastic, but so far no cracks.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Hot water Wanted to replace a working 18 year old hot water heater with something that I would not have to worry about a tank leaking. Our home is very near the Rural Water tower and had water pressure at 90+ lbs.. As a part of the Marathon water heater install I installed a (water district provided) water pressure reducing valve to reduce the pressure to 45 lbs and also a thermal expansion bladder tank as recommended by the install directions.
