Softened Water

Hi, I have very hard water, >100 GPG hard in West Texas. My softener removes the hardness, yet will the elements in this unit not last due to no anode in the softened water? Thanks
Asked by: Stratosurfer
Yes, this unit is not designed with an anode rod. The primary purpose of the anode is to protect a steel tank from corrosion and then developing a leak. Since the interior of a Marathon is plastic an anode rod is not needed.

Can I use this to supply water in my boiler?
Asked by: Arthur
You may need to check the specifications for your boiler to see if this will work or contact a local professional to see if the installation can be done. This 50 gallon Marathon model has a maximum temperature of 150° F and has a first hour rating of 54 gallons.

Will this size hand Family of 6

Does this unit recharge fast enough to handle a family of 6? We are in San Angelo TX on well water. We currently have a Rheem 50 gallon water heater that is doing the job OK, I have it turned up to 150 degrees which is the max setting. I think having my 50 gallon heater turned up to 150F helps on recover. We have a rotten egg smell on hot water is why we are considering this unit. Thanks
Asked by: Stratosurfer
All residential 4500 watt water heaters will only heat up to 21 gallons to a 90 degree rise in an hour. Also every water heater has a 70% rule. This means only 70% of the water in the tank us usable before you notice a drop in temperature because of the cold water blending with the heated water. In the instance of a 50 gallon water heater only 35 gallons are usable before you will notice a drop in temperature. Turning up you unit to 150 degrees is dangerous as you have increased you scalding danger to about 1 second. This does give you a bit more blended water but again this is dangerous and detrimental to your water heater. The higher the temperature above the recommended factory setting of 120 degrees will make you water heater and its parts wear out quicker. With these things being known you clearly need a larger capacity water heater. Call into 800-431-1549 and speak with our technical support team who will ask a few questions and make a recommendation based on your answers.

Marathon 50 Gal. Short 4500-Watt Lifetime Electric Water Heater is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 184.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Failed in 4 years. I had this installed in my new house and after 4 years it is DEAD. The Warranty Page won't actually show you the warranty, and the warranty verification tool says it can't find the status of my hot water heater, even though the marketing department seems to be able to find its model from my serial number and send me marketing emails JUST FINE.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointed Bought the tank in November of 2015 for a new home. We moved into the house in May 2016. It was fine for about one week, then the elements broke! Called Rheem and they sent us new elements (standard elements do not fit), but only after the plumber called, too. Took cold showers until the parts came 4 days later. Less than a week later the thermostat broke. Cold showers again!! Didn't bother calling. We were frustrated and sick of taking cold showers so we just had our plumber install a standard hot water tank. Very disappointed especially considering how EXPENSIVE it was to buy.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from plastic tank a problem When these first came out I installed several of them, in my house, an apartment, and at least two customer's homes. I have lost track of one of the customers, but the other three have gone bad. The company gets a good rating, as all have been replaced by them, except for the one in the apartment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Plenty of HOT Water! I bought the water heater to replace one that had started leaking, I was able to take a HOT shower less than an hour after I installed it and our family of 4 has not run out oh hot water yet. The outside of the water heater stays at room temperature thanks to the superior insulation. I bought mine through our Electric CO OP (Ozarks Electric Cooperative) and saved about $250.00 vs buying from a home center or other outlet They only sell the highest efficiency electric appliances (water heaters and heat pumps) to their members and they are sold at cost since by law an Electric Cooperative can't make a profit.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Lifetime Warranty* I bought 2 of these recently. I'm not sure how well they will last and I'm not sure why you need to register them to get a lifetime warranty or why they cost so much. Will I own the house in another 10+ years to see if they last longer than my last ones??? Maybe. The reason I bought them was because my plumber recommend them because of the lifetime warranty, but even he has no idea how long they will last. Here's hoping.... The only reason I rated this medium and not higher is because it is newer and I have really no idea how long it will last or how it is performing compared to my old one.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Silver Bullet We've beenin our house 11 years & have had to replace our 2nd tank. So our plumber recommended it as a life time option. Like the look, water is nice & HOT, looks good in the corner, the grey helps it fade away.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hotter water than I've had in ages! I purhcased my Marathon water heater just days ago, it replaced an 11+ year old water heater. The water is hot, fast and reliable so far. A small glitch with the installation, it was rectified by days end and everything was completed as promised. My only negative comment, the Rheem Marathon water heaters aren't easy to find in Nova Scotia, I had to do a lot of research to find the only company that knew about it and would/could install my Rheem Marathon!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One Year Later We had this unit installed to replace a ten year-old tank, and so far we're very happy with our choice and can't complain about it. It's heats the incoming municipal cold water to a toasty 125 degrees, and we're able to squeeze in one dishwashing session by hand and three showers by family members before the hot water supply is gone. We were worried about possible cracks in the plastic shell over time, since it is a hard plastic, but so far no cracks.
