Hi, I have very hard water, >100 GPG hard in West Texas. My softener removes the hardness, yet will the elements in this unit not last due to no anode in the softened water?
Thanks

Answer:
Yes, this unit is not designed with an anode rod. The primary purpose of the anode is to protect a steel tank from corrosion and then developing a leak. Since the interior of a Marathon is plastic an anode rod is not needed.

Does this unit recharge fast enough to handle a family of 6? We are in San Angelo TX on well water. We currently have a Rheem 50 gallon water heater that is doing the job OK, I have it turned up to 150 degrees which is the max setting. I think having my 50 gallon heater turned up to 150F helps on recover. We have a rotten egg smell on hot water is why we are considering this unit.
Thanks

In the instance of a 50 gallon water heater only 35 gallons are usable before you will notice a drop in temperature.
Turning up you unit to 150 degrees is dangerous as you have increased you scalding danger to about 1 second. This does give you a bit more blended water but again this is dangerous and detrimental to your water heater. The higher the temperature above the recommended factory setting of 120 degrees will make you water heater and its parts wear out quicker.
With these things being known you clearly need a larger capacity water heater. Call into 800-431-1549 and speak with our technical support team who will ask a few questions and make a recommendation based on your answers. Read Less

Rated 4.2 out of 5 by 57 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Product started to leak within months. Rheem pays just for the gasket - "Parts only warranty" Warranty is limited to "Parts only", no matter how old the unit is. July 4, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Faulty vacuum valve – beware Back in March of 2013, I bought a 50 gal. short model electric water heater and I recently discovered (Dec. 2015) that there was a small amount water leaking from the vacuum relief valve on the top of the unit. After some research, my contractor found out that is a common problem, contacted Rheem and they immediately sent out a replacement part at no cost. Unfortunately, I still ended up having to pay almost $400 in labor to replace a faulty vacuum valve that was a little more than 2 years old. I hope this will fix the issue, but I will have to continuously check the water heater for any leaks from this particular valve. Other reviewers have mentioned that they had to replace this part multiple times – which ends up being more costly than buying a regular water heater. February 9, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Best hot water heater This unit was recommended by our plumber and we are so glad he did. August 1, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Lifetime tank A replacement for an old Marathon which we have had problems with in the early years. Warranty was no hassle. Excellent service from Rheem rep. July 26, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Whe bought two It's our second rheem boiller. Whe bought one for our farm and then one for the house. Great product. July 8, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Marathon Water heater This is my third one, 2 developed leaks, I think the quality control could be better. At least they replace for no cost. July 16, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Wanted a Tankless, but settled for this My power supply could not support an electric tankless water heater of sufficient GPM, so I settled for this. The Rheem Marathon water heater. It had pretty good reviews and the design of the water heater made sense to me. The installation was fairly easy, because of the location and the light weight of the water heater. The only reason I dinged it on quality is that at least one of the thermostats is inaccurate. After letting the water heater heat the water, I ran the water through the faucet and tested the temperature with an infrared tester. The temperature was running about 138° F, almost 20°F higher than it was supposed to be. I turned both thermostats to their lowest setting and it still ran in the mid to high 120s. After a while I noticed I had lost capacity and we were getting warm third person showers. I increased the lower thermostat to approx. the 125 setting and the temp is now in the low 130s. I will eventually get it tuned in, but for the price I would expect the thermostats would be more accurate. On the plus side I measured the temperature of the outside of the tank and it was the same as the garage walls so there is very little thermal leakage. I have no idea yet if I am saving any money with this water heater, but time will tell. I should get plenty of time to tell, as it will never rust out! January 12, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Poor Product,Complex, Difficult to Install, Does Not Work Product is difficult to secure, since it must be ordered online for curbside delivery. When delivered, complex installation due to shape of tank. Tank that was to be worry free from leaking for my lifetime, leaked within 12 hours. Highly not recommended March 1, 2012
