Installed easily. good recovery ,good price, started right up. Big improvement over 12 yr old Hot water heater.Time will tell. Remember to make sure the existing gas line is clean at shut off of old tread seal or tape, before new line is installed.

I replaced an existing old 40 gallon water heater with this Rheem 29 gallon one myself. The job was only difficult due to the old non-standard plumbing in place that my old water heater hooked up to. I replaced most everything including the recommended gas line, added a gate valve to shut off the cold water, and a ball gas valve for code compliance. This water heater went in and connected right up once I added 3/4" fittings. I had an issue getting the heater to register that the pilot light was lit. I called customer service and they told me when I pressed the ignition button a few times to hold in the black control knob in at the same time, and when I could hear what sounded like gas flowing to turn the knob to the low setting. I followed that direction and the water heater fired right up. After an hour I ran two loads in the washing machine, washed a load of dishes, and took a shower with no shortage of regulated hot water coming out about 120 degrees. I have had no issues and the unit has run fine for the past week, its so quiet I can hardly hear it running when the burner ignites a real improvement over my old one. Bought from Home Depot.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by DIYer Beware - Faulty "STATUS" Indicator Light
Installation was not difficult. Problem with Lighting the water heater. Repeatedly followed instructions but "STATUS" indicator light did not blink indicating ignition. Several calls to Rheem Technical Service had them insisting it was poor gas pressure. Gas & Electric service came immediately and gas pressure was perfect and he lit heater. The problem was nonworking status light. Again called Rheem and the part is out of stock for at least two weeks.
(Also, three heaters at our local Home Depot all had dented tops.)

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Tandreas Bad TRD device 5 days without hot water!
Have yet to get mine working. I installed it on a Friday, pilot would not light so a tech had to come out and it had a broken Combustion Shut-off device (TRD) He can not carry them because it is a safety device and had to order one. I won't have hot water until Tuesday! Not happy about that. The tech said he has seen 5 of these heaters with this problem in the last several weeks and all have been from Home Depot. Could be a shipping/handling problem. There was no damage to the cardboard box whatsoever and no apparent damage to the unit. The tech said it was installed correctly with adequate ventilation and vent was not blocked. Gas pressure was perfect. No reason for it to fail but it did.

I read the reviews and saw the problem with the combustion shut-off device (TRD), but needed a replacement and was out of town, and Lowe's was out of stock of a comparable unit. The second day after installation I called Rheem because the heater would not light. It took 5 days to get the replacement TRD. After TRD replacement and another 3 months, the heater quit working and had to be replaced completely. I wanted to pay more and upgrade, but was told it had to be a same item replacement. I was told this was a problem because of the extreme high summer temperatures in Arizona, which is when I had all the problems. Do NOT buy this water heater. The TRD is a known problem to Rheem, and yet they still sell this unreliable unit.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by W8OMS Horrible Experience
After working fine for four months we suddenly had no hot water. I called in a service tech. He found that the Combustion Shut-off Device (TRD) had triggered. It's a tiny glass bulb for safety purposes. If "ANYTHING" makes it unhappy, it breaks and shuts-off the heater. Nothing around the water heater had changed in the four months it had been working. Now here's the REALLY bad part. The service tech could not get a replacement TRD. He had me call Rheem to have them ship me one. Rheem told me that part is NOT REPLACEABLE. It's a little glass bulb the size of an auto turn signal bulb. How could that not be replaceable? Government regulations Rheem told me. So for that little, tiny part the brand new water heater is NOT REPAIRABLE!!! Here's the REALLY, REALLY bad part. Now I have to remove the water heater and return it to Home Depot for an exchange. It was only four months ago that I was changing out the water heater; now I have to do it all again. I don't know about you but it's not something I care to do every four months. I plan to get a store credit instead of an exchange of another Rheem water heater. I'll be buying some other brand!

The water heater installed easily and has a modern pilot start and small monitor panel which makes it easier to light and safer to monitor.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Housetroll Seems solid
Well, the unit seems solid, the install was a breeze, and it lit right away after I first purged the gas line - something some of you probably failed to do if you've had pilot-lighting issues. I'm reluctant to give five stars to anything that isn't proven, and water heaters really aren't proven until they've reached beyond their stated life cycle. So, since no one offers reasonably priced 9 year NG water heaters anymore, I guess I'll let you know at the end of the six year warranty whether or not it was worth it.
Summary: Easy installation, start up. Been in for two weeks, no probs.
Can't recommend something that hasn't been installed for long.
